Petrie needs to go

This team is bad. Yes, the coaching could be better, but this is still a lottery team even with a competent coach. The talent just isn't there for us to be competitive. It hasn't been there for the last four years. And in all honesty, we're probably at least 2 years away from competing. Petrie is the person responsible for putting the team together and ultimately the blame for our teams struggles must fall on his shoulders.

Believe it or not were technically in very good shape. Yes we suck... but that comes hand in hand with the lowest payroll in the nba. We have promising young talent and a crap load of money.

This team won't be ready to compete for another 2-3 years. By then we will have another lottery pick and still have money to fill the holes. Be patient and enjoy the growth of these babies. The team in 2 years will be far different then it is now. Cousins, Tyreke, this years lotto pick, Hassann Greene and Casspi will probably be the only players still on this team. Eveyone else will be traded with our cap manuevers to build around our 3 core players tyreke cousins and this years lotto pick.

The "plan" for the past 2 years has been to wait till after the next CBA. They are in a good position financially going into the next CBA.

no, he doesn't. Salary, talent, youth, and picks are all there. Needs to be put together on the court

I think that before the season began, most fans looked at the roster and felt optimistic about the future of the team. We had removed Hawes and replaced him with Dalembert, and drafted Cousins and Whiteside. For the first time we had depth in the frontcourt, and talented although inexperienced depth to some extent. We had most of the players we considered core players returning. Beno, Evans, Greene, Casspi, Garcia and Landry. The only player of note not returning other than Hawes was Nocioni. No one is going to convince me that our lousy play is because Nocioni is no longer on the team.

I think one could safely argue that Dalembert plus Cousins is better than Hawes. So on paper the team should be better talent wise and therefore improve on last years record. I predicted 35 wins. And thats laughable right now. Shows what I know! Right now just matching the 25 wins of last year seems as far away as swimming to Mars. If you want to argue that the team could use more talent, well, just about every team could use more talent. In our case it would need to be experienced talent. But regardless of that, I think most on this fourm believe the team should be playing better with the talent it has. And for the most part, thats the issue. Not Petrie!

I'm not here defending Petrie. His record is what it is. And all things considered, its not a terrible one. Like any GM he's had his good drafts and trades and his bad one's. I'll leave it to the critics to decide how good he is. But I will say this. For the first time since he's been here he's actually gone out and tried to bring in defensive players. And maybe thats where things have gone wrong to some extent. I think Petrie is excellent at putting an offensive team on the floor. Lets face it, he was one hell of an offensive player himself in his day. The dude is very good at seeking out players that know how to score the ball. He's had his occasional mistake, like a Douby. But when you look back on it, he also thought of Douby as a good defender, and maybe that was the flaw in his thinking with that pick.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm not sure Petrie knows how to put together a good offensive team that can also play defense unless its an accident. Its really a tricky thing when you think about it. All the parts have to mesh properly. But, and its a big but. The key ingredient is the mix master. Its sort of like making bread. Too much salt and it just doesn't taste right. If you don't let it rise properly for the right amount of time, its ruined. The head coach is the magician. There is a reason the good one's get paid a lot of money.

Now having said that, I doubt that there's a head coach in the NBA that could take this group deep into the playoffs. Or maybe, even to the playoffs. But thats not the point. The point is, that I think there are head coaches that could make this team competitive. I think this group sincerely wants to win. But at the moment they're a confused, disorganized team that at times looks like a highschool team. I looked at their faces last night. I read their body language. They had the look of a defeated team. Are you kidding me? This early in the season? So I'm not sure whats going on. You want to blame Petrie, be my guest. Just have a replacement in mind before you fire him. And by the way, don't expect the team to start playing better shortly thereafter. Last time I checked he wasn't playing or coaching. But I'm sure as hell he's watching.

As an aside, I'm starting to think that maybe Petrie and the Maloofs expected this. Maybe not this bad, but they knew there were going to be a lot of bumps in the road. If so, then don't expect Westphal to be fired, because he just may be the sacrificial lamb. A cheap coach thats just good enough to get them to the next offseason when they can get serious about things.

This.

Of all the 'Blank needs to go' threads I would of thought Petrie would be the last name mentioned. This team is not a crappily put together team, they have 2 pieces in place for the future and a bunch of other question marks. I'd say Petrie has done a wonderful job when you take into account are cap space and such. Hell if anybody knows whats wrong or how to fix this squad it's probably Petrie himself. I wouldn't even say squat if he wanted to come down and coach this team haha

Letting go of Petrie would be foolish. He is doing what he can to put together a team, it's just unfortunate sometimes that the pieces don't fit together or the coach doesn't know how to utilize them properly. Petrie def. has been struggling finding the right coach for this team. The constant coaching changes can take its toll on players. Sure, he's missed in some drafts and his trades are pretty decent. Not every GM is perfect, plus who would replace him? He is fine where he is, he just needs to be more aggressive in getting us a trade that will actually benefit us.
