I think that before the season began, most fans looked at the roster and felt optimistic about the future of the team. We had removed Hawes and replaced him with Dalembert, and drafted Cousins and Whiteside. For the first time we had depth in the frontcourt, and talented although inexperienced depth to some extent. We had most of the players we considered core players returning. Beno, Evans, Greene, Casspi, Garcia and Landry. The only player of note not returning other than Hawes was Nocioni. No one is going to convince me that our lousy play is because Nocioni is no longer on the team.
I think one could safely argue that Dalembert plus Cousins is better than Hawes. So on paper the team should be better talent wise and therefore improve on last years record. I predicted 35 wins. And thats laughable right now. Shows what I know! Right now just matching the 25 wins of last year seems as far away as swimming to Mars. If you want to argue that the team could use more talent, well, just about every team could use more talent. In our case it would need to be experienced talent. But regardless of that, I think most on this fourm believe the team should be playing better with the talent it has. And for the most part, thats the issue. Not Petrie!
I'm not here defending Petrie. His record is what it is. And all things considered, its not a terrible one. Like any GM he's had his good drafts and trades and his bad one's. I'll leave it to the critics to decide how good he is. But I will say this. For the first time since he's been here he's actually gone out and tried to bring in defensive players. And maybe thats where things have gone wrong to some extent. I think Petrie is excellent at putting an offensive team on the floor. Lets face it, he was one hell of an offensive player himself in his day. The dude is very good at seeking out players that know how to score the ball. He's had his occasional mistake, like a Douby. But when you look back on it, he also thought of Douby as a good defender, and maybe that was the flaw in his thinking with that pick.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm not sure Petrie knows how to put together a good offensive team that can also play defense unless its an accident. Its really a tricky thing when you think about it. All the parts have to mesh properly. But, and its a big but. The key ingredient is the mix master. Its sort of like making bread. Too much salt and it just doesn't taste right. If you don't let it rise properly for the right amount of time, its ruined. The head coach is the magician. There is a reason the good one's get paid a lot of money.
Now having said that, I doubt that there's a head coach in the NBA that could take this group deep into the playoffs. Or maybe, even to the playoffs. But thats not the point. The point is, that I think there are head coaches that could make this team competitive. I think this group sincerely wants to win. But at the moment they're a confused, disorganized team that at times looks like a highschool team. I looked at their faces last night. I read their body language. They had the look of a defeated team. Are you kidding me? This early in the season? So I'm not sure whats going on. You want to blame Petrie, be my guest. Just have a replacement in mind before you fire him. And by the way, don't expect the team to start playing better shortly thereafter. Last time I checked he wasn't playing or coaching. But I'm sure as hell he's watching.
As an aside, I'm starting to think that maybe Petrie and the Maloofs expected this. Maybe not this bad, but they knew there were going to be a lot of bumps in the road. If so, then don't expect Westphal to be fired, because he just may be the sacrificial lamb. A cheap coach thats just good enough to get them to the next offseason when they can get serious about things.
