What I just realized is that the other trades, we had no idea what was about to happen, and this one we were talking aobut for 3-4 days before. I hope that doesn't mean anything about Petries confidence or skill.

Well, think about it, we had two other teams and their management staffs involved, and at least one player agent. I doubt that ANY advance info on this deal came out of Sacramento. Petrie acknowledged something was going on (he didn't say what) when the leak became a flood.

Keep in mind that we moved two "spare part" players. It's not like a blockbuster trade that rocks us to our very core. A lot of people on this board were speculating that Bobby would be packaged in a deal...

I think Petrie just didn't worry too much about it.

just didnt remember hearing from the other sides in the miller trade, even tho that was bigger, so that was my train of thought

Yeah it is different to hear about something petrie is doing before he does it, But i agree with what someone else said that he probably didn't care too much on this one. Had it been for bibby, Peja or miller i bet we wouldn't of heard a word. Hmmm I wonder if petrie tells other gms that if they say anything the deal is off. Maybe thats why we never here anything on the big ones Just a thought

All we've heard so far from Petrie is that there is a trade with Utah and Memphis that they'd like to complete once the moratorium is up.

The thing that's changed over the past few years is other teams are letting more leaks out and the demand for daily rumors has gone up so newspapers and online sources have all stepped up their rumor sniffing efforts. Back in 2001, there were only a few places you could read NBA rumors at. Not much that got reported actually panned out and it was mostly Pete Vescey, Sam Smith and fanboy floated rumors. These days, you can go to hoopshype, realgm, inside hoops plus a few other sites and message boards to get stuff before it's officially reported.
Secrets are rarer in today's NBA, but the Kings are one of the few teams who still keep them.

That whole Petrie stealth-master thing is kind of a myth anyway. Now GEOFF himself won't say anything. Not his style. And except in a few cases where I beleive the front office purposefully leaked info to try to prepare the public, the rest of the personnel seem to keep their mouths shut too. But there has NEVER been any gag order on the team on the other side, and especially not on the agents. I think what you are seeing now is two things 1) the interent reaches much further, and there is far more attention being paid and interconnectivity out there; and 2) everybody knows that we HAVE to make moves, and so there is a spotlight on our moves. We're also still in the FA period when the offseason attention is at a peak and rumors are flying. Throw it all together, and the odds of Geoff being able to keep a deal quiet go down dramatically.
