Winning record as a head coach in the NBA... Coached the phx suns into the playoffs each year that he coached them...

to be honest right off the bat seems like the best choice for our coach minus Scot(which wont happen). but compared to Eddie Jordan and the rest of the ultra flawed coaches out there, seems like a safe and smart choice???

Dont know too much about his style.... your thoughts?

What about Jeff Van Gundy??? I think Jeff and Scott are the front runners.. I would consider Paul Westphal would be a close 3rd...

He's Exec VP of Basketball Operations for the Mavs. Why should he want a demotion and pay cut to come coach a worse team?
Maybe hes already got plenty of money... which is true... and would be willing to take a huge paycut(which may not be true) to only earn 2-4 million dollars..... a year... to......coach vs sit in a desk....

Maybe he likes coaching more than the VP stuff???? maybe he doesn't really do a whole lot as VP behind Donnie Nelson... who knows??? hes only been VP for a year... maybe its not working out...

...because Mark Cuban is mental and micromanages his executive staff to infinity. Westphal getting the upstairs job seemed a sort of concession for still being "under contract" when they let go of Avery. A fresh start and a last chance of coaching a winner- on the West coast, no lest- may be too much to pass up.

I would rather have Van Gundy. I wouldn't be upset if we got Westphal, but I would definately prefer Van Gundy. This is assuming Byron Scott doesn't get out of his contract.

Today's articles seem to say Scott is coaching one more year at New Orleans, his last year under contract. That said, any experienced NBA coach gets on the Kings search list.

Westphal, Van Gundy, Jordan all seem possible. All gets down to who can coach the "kids" and get everyone believing in playing defense.

How about a longshot like Rick Pitino. I don't know if he's even interested. He's got a pretty good gig where he's at, but he fits the description of what Petrie's looking for. He does emphasize defense, and is good with young players. (the latter being an assumption on my part)

Pitino failed epically at Boston. He's not coming back, and I don't think any rational NBA front office would invite him back. He's a college coach.

Guess what folks? Pitino is not walking through that door, Kingsfans. Byron Scott is not walking through that door. People don't realize that, and as soon as they realize those guys are not coming through that door, the better this town will be for all of us.

Really? The Kings can still make a play Byron. He has publicly stated his interest in coming to Sacramento. Despite the news conference, the Kings and Hornets can still work out a deal. It is not out of the question. But I guess you're the expert huh?

He is actually referring to one of Pitino's more famous quotes where he basically bashed the city of Boston for being so negative and expecting a young, inexperienced team to play like the legends of the franchise.

Rick Pitino has emerged as a candidate for the Sacramento Kings’ coaching job, multiple sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Pitino has communicated his interest in a possible NBA return to Kings ownership, sources say, and one league official describes the Maloof family as “intrigued.”
Same dude that predicted Wizards would hire Saunders, and that the Kings are interested in Jordan. It sounds like the Maloofs might be involved. Not sure why we would even be interested in Pitino considering the Theus connection.

Here you go:

Pitino said:
Larry Bird is not walking through that door, fans. Kevin McHale is not walking through that door, and Robert Parish is not walking through that door. And if you expect them to walk through that door, they're going to be gray and old. What we are is young, exciting, hard-working, and we're going to improve. People don't realize that, and as soon as they realize those three guys are not coming through that door, the better this town will be for all of us because there are young guys in that (locker) room playing their asses off. I wish we had $90 million under the salary cap. I wish we could buy the world. We can't; the only thing we can do is work hard, and all the negativity that's in this town sucks. I've been around when Jim Rice was booed. I've been around when Yastrzemski was booed. And it stinks. It makes the greatest town, greatest city in the world, lousy. The only thing that will turn this around is being upbeat and positive like we are in that locker room... and if you think I'm going to succumb to negativity, you're wrong. You've got the wrong guy leading this team.

I would agree with you, but mostly because he was able to call too many of the shots. Management shots. Which is why I would seriously doubt Petrie would have any interest. I only thew it out there because of some rumors that were flying around.

Hey, people are just having fun speculating. Whats the harm in that? Especially at this time of the year when the only thing left to talk about is based on speculation. Go rain on someone else's parade.:)

Kings seek out Westphal, Eddie Jordan

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento Kings plan to interview Paul Westphal this week for their head coaching vacancy.

Westphal is the Dallas Mavericks' executive vice president of basketball operations. His lengthy coaching resume includes a trip to the 1993 NBA Finals during 3½ seasons in charge of the Phoenix Suns, followed by stints with the Seattle SuperSonics and Pepperdine.

The Kings also plan to interview former Washington Wizards coach Eddie Jordan this week before president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie leaves for a scouting trip to Spain.

Interim coach Kenny Natt was fired last month after the Kings finished with the NBA's worst record at 17-65. The new coach will be Sacramento's fourth since 2006.

Yeah cool -- we could get a 32/33yr old Dirk. That would be nifty. Title here we come.
Well based on the research I did that showed that only a handfull of players ever make it to 1000 NBA games played, and that Dirk has already played in 839 games. I think I would pass on him. Its an even grayer area with european players, because of playing so many games in europe at such an early age.

Even those players that make it to 1000 or beyond, are just mere shells of themselves the last couple of years.

Yup, I'll take a pass on Dirk unless he wants the MLE or something. Oh, and not sure about Westphal...the guy hasnt been a head coach in 9 years, and his recent NBA track record as an Asst. Coach and VP of Basketball Operations for Dallas is shotty at best. I would hate to have us get in a Dick Motta type of situation and hire a former head coach that's over the hill, then come in and screw things up more. I'll still list Byron Scott and Avery Johnson as my top 2 candidates for our team.

I dunno about Westphal, he had a nice run with a talented Suns team, but his last two head coach jobs ended badly (fired from Sonics, fired from Pepperdine after going 7-20 his last year). The sonics had some talent but were old (aging Patrick Ewing, Gary Payton, Vin Baker). My feeling is he does not do too well building up from mediocre talent.
