Package Artest w/ KT still the plan?

So the Bibby trade was acceptable but a little disapointing.
I'm not going to lose sleep over it as long as we dont re-sign those duds.

Now for Ron Artest, it would make sense to me if KT was packaged with him.
Unlike Bibby, Artest has way more game changing ability and would easily push a contender over the top, (something Bibby would not).
Ron's contract also makes it much easiar to packge KT with, and I think some teams would be willing to take the risk.

Because I've been a believer of building the team around Keven and Ron since Ron's arrival, anything less than expirings + 1st + dumping KT and I will be VERY disapointed.
Unless somehow we dump SAR + KT for just expirings. (Pipe dream)

Anyone share the same thoughts?

The problem is teams will most likely not give you an expiring and take back 10 million a year for a couple of years in Kenny Thomas. They would have to be desperate for Artest. It's a bad business move. Why would they saddle themselves with KT's salary when they have an expiring at the end of the year?

I think your best case scenario is Artest and some filler from the Bibby trade, or something to get someone back. Again, you don't want to take back a contract that goes any longer than the end of next season, if it's a player that you don't think you'll want to keep for the long term, or that you aren't sure about. If you do, you're just prolonging the process this team is going through.

I would rather let Artest walk at the end of the year, since we already have his replacement in John Salmon's, than take back a contract that goes longer than the end of next season.

Also, you never know about Tyronn Lue. He could be our backup PG, behind Beno next year. We still need one of those, since Quincy isn't really a PG, although we do have Cisco to help back up the PG spot like he was doing before bibby came back.

Because of his opt-out clause, Ron is essentially an ending contract. As such, there are only three scenarios in which trading Ron even makes any sense.

1. Packaged with KT or SAR for shorter/expiring contracts.
2. For a first round draft pick.
3. For young talent that we want to hold on to.

Trading Ron for nothing but expirings is a lateral move, and one that could only be interpreted around the league as a big neon sign hanging over Geoff's head flashing: "Take Advantage Of Me!"

Imagine if Denver got Ron for Najera (might need another salary to make it match) with no pick, no Kleiza. Who would ever offer us a reasonable deal again?

Having said that, is there anyway we can re-sign Artest for like 4yrs @ 10M per, where the last year is a TEAM option?
Thoughts?

You can probably find a way to trade Artest and KT to a team for expirings and maybe a marginal prospect.
You can probably find a way to trade Artest for picks and maybe a good young prospect.
You just can't do both at the same time.

Everyone wants to get rid of KT, but everyone wants to get back some talent or valuable picks in return for Artest. If it comes down to it, I would rather see us get back talent and picks for Artest then mix KT into things and end up with only a salary dump to show for Artest.

Something like this:

To Sacramento:
Brent Barry
Fabricio Oberto
Francisco Elson
Vassilis Spanoulis
1st Round Pick

To San Antonio:
Ron Artest
Kenny Thomas

With the recent teams in the West improving a lot, Ron Artest would push San Antonio back to being the favorites.

Hey Smills,

Congrats on the new house and such that I read from realgm.
Don't worry if those ppl are being asses over there, your true home is on this board :)
LOL

Anyhow, it would be nice if Petrie did something nice for us to gloat once in a while.

Anyone want to comment on this from San Antonio's point of view?
I mean, they did see first hand how effective Artest was in the post season 2 yrs ago, and he hasnt regressed at all since.

Remember, you have to have OPEN roster spots for every player included in a trade. We aren't going to see another mutli-player deal of that magnitude, IMHO.

Yes true, but we have a lot of garbage players to waive, like the recently acquired AJ + Wright.

I agree, but Im still holding out for getting rid of him now. The sooner the better.

you might want to think about something. Some said the trade of Bibby was to be able to resign Beno and have cap relief. Maybe the cap relief is to be able to resign Ron since we are the team that can offer him the most.

At this point, I'm almost positive Ron Artest is NOT a part of the future plans of the Sacramento Kings. If we do resign him, it will be as part of a sign and trade.

Are these your own personal opinions, or are you saying you know something as fact from within the organization that leads you to believe this?

Here's the best option in my opinion....

Artest
KT

For

Nene
Eddie
Kleiza

What this does is sticks the nuggests with KT's contract but they should be ok with that because they are ultimately saving 2-3 years off the end of Nene's contract. Eddie expires for us, and we go from being 16.5 mil in contracts between Ron and KT to 11.5 mil in contracts between Kleiza and Nene. So we emediatley save for next year. If Nene works out, we have a bargin big man at 10mil a year. If he doesn't... well he would likely be better at 10mil than KT at 9mil... we'd just have to use him longer.
