Our jerseys

Been curious for a long time why we have Sacramento on our home jerseys and kings on our Aways. Convention has been the other way around, city name for away and team name for home jerseys. When we originally went to using Sacramento on the jerseys it was also on the Aways, but the most recent change from a few years ago has it on our home unis.

Just wondering if this has been brought up or discussed before.

Any thoughts on why that is

Because the Maloofs don't consider Sacramento home of course! ;)

In reality, I am not sure why it is that way. Though for the most part we have always had Kings on the road jersey.

Actually, it made a lot of Kings fans mad when they made that change, whcih happened only a couple og years ago. It didn't make sense at all. At home, we know we're Sacramento. If they were going to have Sacramento on one or the other, it makes much more sense to have it on the away jersey.

Personally, I do think the Maloofs did it intentionally, because they are looking to move the team. So, on the road, the jerseys don't identify them with Sacramento. Just a subtle, subliminal thing, but just a way to distance the team from Sacramento in the minds of other NBA fans.

It's the most obvious and logical explanation.

Kings have generally always had 'Kings' on their road jerseys..

Thought I will agree, I liked seeing Sacramento on the road jersey.

I believe it said Sacramento on the back of the jerseys. I'm almost positive.

EDIT: Bibby 2002 jersey

This is what it should say to the rest of the world;

clubs typically either have their team name on both home and road, or city name on the road.

I actually cant remember ever seeing a city name on a home jersey and team name on a road jersey...just an odd combination.

I thought it was weird when they first came out with them and after what has transpired with the maloofs, it does make the above statements logical

I remember the 2002ish jerseys..just before that we had Kings on the road.

I wish we brought the Sacramento ones back though.

does it really matter? c'mon..

In the grand scheme of things.....no.

I won't lie, though, it does bother me a bit as a Sacramentan. As pointed out, most teams have their city name on home and away jerseys. The Kings may be the only one that doesn't. I'm sure it doesn't matter the Kings fans elsewhere, but it is a matter of civic pride. If we had owners who haven't been planning to take the team away from Sacramento for a number of years, we also might be less sensitive to such things.

Just off of the top of my head:

Spurs, 76ers, Lakers..have just the team name listed.

I honestly can't blame the Maloofs for this (believe I blame them for a lot of wrong doings) so I don't think it matters. As long as they are playing in Sacramento (and stay!) then I am happy.

I think there is a miscommunication with what you are answering. The teams you listed have team names on both home and road jerseys.

As far as I have ever seen:
team name on home + road (lakers, spurs, etc.)

team name on home & city name on road (thunder, clippers, etc.)

city name on home + road jersey (dallas, new york)

city name on home & team name on road (kings.......?)

I have never seen the variety the kings have and have found it odd. I agree with kennadog about civic pride and representing your city on the road.

I know this isnt an earth shattering thread and really makes no difference (who cares?). Just curious as to if anyone else had noticed or had any thoughts

I understand, I agree with what you are saying..I have never seen it flip-flopped how we have it in Sacramento. I was just pointing out not all teams list their city on the jersey :).

I would like to go back to Kings at home and Sacramento on the road..but I doubt that will happen.

Leave Kings on the away jerseys so when they move they won't have the expense of buying new away jerseys. Every penny counts.

In the first year I think the name of the city was below the number. Am I right?

In the first couple seasons in Sacramento, the players last name was below the number on the back of the jersey. 'Kings' were always on the front. I think it was sometime around 1990 or 1991, they went to the name above the number.

Here's an interesting tidbit for those that don't know, the Kings "powder" blue road jerseys were a mistake. They were supposed to be royal blue (as they became several seasons later), but a miscommunication with the company that produced the jerseys occurred and powder blue is what they got. Being frugal owners, they didn't pay to have the mistake corrected and the team played in those awful uniforms for several seasons. I don't think it was until around the Mitch Richmond/Lionel Simmons era (90 or 91) that they finally got the royal blues. Then in 1994, they unveiled the uni's everyone remembers from the glory days of CWebb, Bibby, Peja and Vlade.

Interesting. When the KingsFans Southern California Chapter formed we were given some 20+ T-shirts by the media department (many thanks again) to establish support for our team when our group of 26-30 attended the annual Kings-Clippers in Staples Center. Those T-shirts all had one word on the front...........Kings.

Staples Center also hosts the Kings!! The now champion LA Kings NHL hockey team. I had to spend my own money to have a printer add the word "Sacramento" to the shirts to tell SoCal who he hell we were and not to embarass ourselves in the LA area. BLATTTTT! So yeah, I think there was a message there even 3 years ago.
