Orlando loses SVG

#62
everyone on this board who was poo-pooing orlando getting SVG is quietly biding their time right now to say "i told you so" to us.

but even if that happens, it's worth it. i don't remember the last time i felt that the kings were lucky. :)

I will take back the "kings hit rock bottom....again" if this goes though..... wow great point with not being able to remember feeling like we got lucky.

Since I'm still at work, is anyone listening to 1140 right now? I'm curious as to hear if Grant and Mike are getting alot of calls regarding SVG.

Ya Grant was saying the appeal of Petire being one of the best GM's in the league alot better than Orlando's GM in Otis Smith, and the Maloofs being one of the best ownership groups, and with having the best fans in the NBA and with Orlando not even selling out every game and there fans being ya know so-so all work in Sacramento's favor and are all appealing to a head coach.

Yes, Grant would say all that wouldn't he.

And while we are at it, Otis Smith has been the better GM the last few years -- we'll see how he handles his cap room here, but he's done a real nice job there ever since that Vasquez debacle.

question: why would riley only ask for sompensation from ORL and not from SAC?

btw, today has been a BEAUTIFUL day. just beautiful, warm with a slight breeze and sunlight! how much u wanna bet this very weather on this very day is going to push him towards saying yes...even just a little.

i'm not jumping to any conclusions, but people say they really make it sound like a done deal on 740, radio station down in Orlando.

Because they are in the same division - Riley doesn't really care if he goes west.

Or the favorite king of all conspiracy theories we were talking about on the bleachermob forums today that Riley and Petrie are working on an Artest deal and squabbling over whether or not someone like Haslem or a second first round pick would be part of the deal. Then the Magic become players again for the coach that Petrie wants and so he tells Riley - "if you demand compensation for Van Gundy and the Magic don't hire him, we will forget about the second draft pick." Probably not the case, but at least an interesting thought.

It's not a done deal until the contract is signed (and even that may not be truly done, i.e. Donovan fiasco)!

I went on an interview once, was ready to take the job, and flew back to show my wife the town, and she nixed it. So you never know...

I see were I could get caught up in that theory.

No more SVG news at 5:45pm via KHTK. Grant just said that he really did not know "all that much" about the former Miami Heat head coach except when he put in a call to some people in the organization down there they had lots of positive things to say about him, like, "good in game and practice coach", "respected by players and peers," with the only "negative" thing he heard being, "yelled at players sometimes and that rubbed Shaq the wrong way a bit when directed at him." He also mentioned a bit earlier that SVG has "ties to this area" going to high school in Martinez in Contra Costa county.

Hmm...that's a bit interesting.

Well, guess we'll find out. Shaq being Shaq considers himself above all criticism, so it might be a fairly unique response (although a bit of unwisdom on SVGs part -- PJ and Riles are saavy enoguh to stroke the big guy's ego to make him play for them -- gotta know who to use the stick on, and who likes carrots. Lots and lots of carrots. :p )

Good point, although I dare you to name the last time Shaq ate a carrot. Maybe a carrot cake, maybe...

That's what Grant said- while it's important to note that a guy like Shaq had grievances with SVG, Shaq isn't one to be quiet and take suggestions at this stage in his career....

Not to mention that it was SVG's first head coaching job. While it is one thing for a guy like Muss to rub all of his players the wrong way and have poor personality management skills in general, pushing the wrong buttons with a big ego like Shaq seems more of a rookie mistake, especially in light of the good relationships it seems like he had with his other players.

I guess if occasionally yelling is a "negative" about SVG I wouldn't be too worried about it. I can't remember the last Kings coach to yell at a player, any player on the court during a game. Muss - no. Adelman - not his style. St. Jean - nope. Reynolds - are u kidding!? Russell - too bored to yell.

Shaq is the biggest prime-dona in the league... I'd give SVG credit for standing up to him.

The Maloof haters need to give it up... SVG is serious, and knows potential. If he's here, it's because the owners and GM... the team is a future gamble.

Regardless... The point is still that SVG could not control Shaq or keep all the other vets with attitudes like Walker and Payton under control. That doesn't say alot for his chances with Ron Artest.

The thing is that if you want someone's attitude to be controlled, you may very well need an old coach like Don Nelson or Riley or Jackson.... I think that not too many players give the same respect to young coaches as they would to these seasoned coaches. Anyways..I think SVG may not be able to command respect in ways Riley and other old names do, but he will not be as spineless and gutless as Mussleman.

I think it's an over-statement to say he couldn't control Shaq and the other vets with attitude. It was not anarchy in Miami under SVG. Lastly, who on this planet could control Artest, assuming he's still with the Kings next season? SVG might have a better chance than most coaches, but we won't know unless he gets the job.

Who said he couldn't control Antoine and Payton?
Heck, Muss controlled Artest... as far as keeping him from killing him. Riley trusted in SVG... is there a better active endorsement?

#88
Not saying Van Gundy isn't a great coach and most likely the best we could get. I'm just saying to get rid of Artest given that there's probably nobody we could get that could control Artest.

Yeah he couldn't control them all the way to a 59-23 record and going 7 games agasint Detroit in the ECF with a team that started with 11 new players than the year before. I hope he can't control Artest and the Kings to 59 wins and a game 7 in the WCF.
