OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma City's new NBA franchise has finally set a date to announce its name and team colors.
The team said Wednesday that it would unveil the name and colors simultaneously on its Web site and at a downtown event Sept. 3.
Clay Bennett's ownership group has applied for trademarks for six names: Thunder, Energy, Wind, Marshalls, Barons and Bison.
Oklahoma City television station KOCO has reported that the choice will be Thunder, but Bennett has refused to comment on what the name will be.
The former Seattle SuperSonics announced on July 2 that they would be moving to Oklahoma City.

I'd laugh if they name them the Energy. There is already an NBDL team named the Iowa Energy. The only real name that sounds decent is the Barons. The rest sound amateur to me.

Yeah Barons sounds good. I can't stand names like "Thunder, Lightning, Wild, Wind" etc. They sound so lame. Like the new NHL teams that came out a few years ago.

Oooh, I'll be all on pins and needles until they announce the name.

Hey, is that a possibility? The Oklahoma City Pins & Needles?

I think Thunder is most likely and as I said before (having lived in OKCity) that area has about loudest, most frequent thunder I've ever experienced anywhere.

On a side note, I'm not a big fan of NBA names that are non-plural ending like possible Thunder, Energy, etc. On that basis I'd probably prefer Barons. Heat and Magic made the cut during that expansion round and I guess there's always room for another one since the original acceptance of Jazz. I read somewhere quite a while back that the NFL has a standard of only accepting plural ending names with Texans the most recent approved. MLB may not care as much it seems with Red Sox and White Sox as their only two - but still all of their expansion teams since have taken plural names.

I was hoping the OKC Thundercats would get a serious run.

Snarf could be their mascot:

Post Oklahoma City franchise to unveil team name, colors in Sept. 3 ceremony

Oklahoma City Tornado would work :D

I work with a close cousin of Nick Collison. Evidently they are definitely going to be called the Thunder. Also she mentioned their uniforms are probably going to be baby blue, yellow, and red?

That's not too great, hopefully something different materializes tomorrow. Either way, if AC/DC's next album bombs they've got a sure thing to counteract their losses...

Thunder name and uni are on front page of nba.com. The link to the team site isn't working for me though.

Blue, orange and yellow look like the colors. I think the logo is pretty blah and looks amateurish. I won't be rushing out to buy one. ;)

That is just an awful, awful logo. Very thrown together & amateurish. I don't think they'll stick with this for more than a few seasons.

Everything about this; logo, colors, team name; indicates a team unwilling to commit to anything. Could this possibly be any more generic? It's sad that some mock up in a local newspaper winds up being better than the actual thing.

sonics = laci peterson
clay bennett = scott peterson
thunder = amber frye

bennett pretended to love the sonics, killed them, and is now loving life with his new mistress. only difference is sadly clay bennett wont be put to death for his murder. i feel really bad for seattle

It's honestly hard to image them missing the mark this badly.

They chose a powerfully aggressive moniker to envoke A: Thunderstorms of Tornado Ally B: Thunderbirds nickname of the 45th Infantry unit located in OKC and C: Garth Brooks' hit Thunder Rolls (ESPN)

And then illustrate this with My Little Pony colors and a logo from a Tide commercial.

Call it lame, call it bland, call it pathetic.

I call it simply Poetic Justice.

Although, with Blue, Orange and Yellow maybe they WERE trying to mimic the Thundercats:
