Douby is a steal! Very versatile; can play the 1 or 2. And he can SCORE. A great pick.

so from his own mouth, douby needs to get bigger and better on defense. as of now, i'm not going to pencil him in on our list of "defensive stalwarts." ;)
 
The kid has only been playing organized/competitive BBall for what, 6 years?!?!?!?

I have the feeling he's got a lot more to show (with good coaching) and he's eager to learn.

I like the pick, my thoughts:
1) There are conflicting reports about his defense. nbadraft.net doesn't call him a bad defender, they just say he'll be a liability in the NBA because he's too skinny. They said the EXACT SAME THING about Cisco last year, and would say it about Tayshaun Prince if he was coming out. Quincy won't be guarding Stackhouse in the post, he'll be trying to stay in front of Terry and Devin Harris.
2) Has nothing to do with Bonzi Wells.
3) He will be the backup PG and he's not a true point, but who cares? He's our version of Barbosa, Harris, and Ben Gordon. Artest, and Cisco can both run the offense, I'm glad to get an assassin out there with them. He can bring the ball up.
4) This isn't Kevin Martin scoring 25 at Western Carolina...Douby torched the Big East last year.

6) His last name is Douby. If I hadn't recently sprung for an Artest jersey I'd have already placed my order.

He said he needs to add weight, so of course that involves improving your defense and your overall game. Most have already noted that, especially for the NBA. But the guy still has length and quickness to be able to play defense. Now if you remember Garcia said similar things after he was drafted, as were said about him before the draft, but he's turned out nicely so far (excluding blocks here).

I wasn't saying Douby's a stopper, don't think anyone was meaning that, but saying he can at least stay with his man, try to frustrate him (has been said in a couple scouting reports, namely draftexpress'), and play team defense because of his length and athleticism. That's what I meant. He'll work into Muss' ball pressure and inbounding schemes he mentioned in a couple interviews.

bah, i'm done being down on this pick. it was silly of me to think we could get an impact player at 19 anyway.

Who picked up the player who could be the biggest surprise in his rookie season?

I'll opt for Sacramento, which selected the second best scorer (after Morrison) in the draft in skinny (160 pounds splashed over a 6-2 frame) Quincy Douby of Rutgers.

Veteran NBA talent scouts compared him to Jason Terry of Dallas and, of more ancient vintage, Andrew Toney.

Welcome to Sac-town Quincy!!!

I hope we keep Bonzi because I hope he has earned his starting spot with all the great play this past year.

I hope the starting 5 is still KT,Miller,Ron,Bonzi, Bibby
But it has been the backup three that has hurt us most in games.

Shareef has been great off bench behind KT & Miller, Martin seemed to be hot at home but cool on road, if he is consistant all next year, bingo great backup behind Ron and Bonzi, Douby could be the eight player behind Bibby and Bonzi. He could play for Bibby or next to him.

Last Year the bench sucked mainly when Martin was off his game, and every time Hart was there.

I think a the eighth spot will be a battle between Cisco and Douby

If Martin and Douby both light it up off the bench, I think we can get our offence to produce more overall points, and we will still have the improved defence we aquired last year.

Of course, upgrading our big men could still come this off-season, but will have to wait and see there!

Upgrading the FC will come this summer... Petrie and Muss have said a few times that is an area of focus in what to do to improve the team. As should, because the current FC isn't a planned one.

To add to that, NBADraft.net, has his defense at 7. Which I'd say is solid/above average.

Just needs to add some weight, which he will of course.
 
People knock QD for his apparent lack of D. Well turn the clock back to last year and the year before and that was a knock on both Martin AND Garcia. Both have had to adjust to playing NBA defence and both are doing a solid job.

But here is the thing, Douby is althetic, he is quick and has a 6'9 wingspan. He has ALL the tools to be a good defender if he wants to be one. There is every chance that Douby will develop his defence and will be a much better defender at PG than Bibby. As I said, he has the tools to be a good defender. Its very rare that a star player on his college team is considered a lock down defender come draft.

Draft is all about projected return. You won't get a ready made defender in the draft especially when you are picking at 19.

Um...NBAdraftnet has EVERYBODY'S defense at a 7. They're 1-10 scale is slightly broken since I do not think I've ever seen anybody get less than a 5 in any category. Sene was given a 5 for offense, and he has none. And so a 7 on 5-10 scale is about right. He's competitive. Will never be able to physically match up with NBA OGs, so if he's an OG is going to get pummeled. But as a PG may be able to be an effective defender if he changes his focus. Loses his exceptional quickness as a PG though -- very quick for an OG, merely solid for a PG -- and has never settled in and tried to lock down somebody for long stretches of the game. His best defense was just outscoring his opponent and tryign to hitch up his shorts for a big stop or two.
 
my grip is ppl here loved Bobby Jackson and he couldn't defend me and he couldn't shoot a 3 when he came into the league. now about the Defense read Draftexpress on him.


Defensively, Douby is surprisingly both willing and able to get in front of his man and do whatever he can to lock him up.

Then it mentions his stance and how he shows alot of pride in that part of his game and how that is not usually the case in college when you are also the primary scorer on the team. Most players aren't willing to expend the energy on defense if they are also expected to score 30 points.

“He was my roommate when I went to ABCD camp after my junior year going into my senior year so we got a chance to talk. He’s a really good player and a great person and he’s going to keep improving also. I’m going to enjoy being out there with those guys.”

“I feel real happy. This was a life dream and for it to come true is a real accomplishment. The Kings were really high on me after I had two good workouts with them, so I knew it was a possibility.”

“Everybody was really happy and excited for me because they know the long way I had to go. I worked and never used excuses.”

“Playing for the Kings is a dream come true. The Maloof Brothers did a good job building this team from scratch and I’m impressed with the whole organization.”

On selected Douby ahead of a player left on the board such as Marcus Williams:
“Marcus Williams is a fine player, but the thinking there is that we feel Quincy has some point guard skills as well. He can play off the ball and with Ron and Cisco (Francisco Garcia) we have other ball handlers out there.”

Regarding Head Coach Eric Musselman’s involvement in the draft process:

Talking about how the staff arrived at the decision to choose Douby:
“We had a group of about three or four players we were looking at and he was one of them. We clearly felt that he was the most talented and most complete player in terms of the way the NBA games in played and in terms of where we took him. I think if you noticed in this draft after our pick at 19, every other pick behind that was a small player except for Josh Boone, so you had basically ten 1s or 2s taken in that latter part of the draft. If you look back at the history of the draft, your best chance to get a high quality player where we picked is to take a smaller player.”

Responding to a question regarding Douby’s defensive prowess:
“Just about every rookie that comes into the league has some defensive adjustments and a learning curve that they have to make. In that regard he won’t be an exception, but there hasn’t been a defensive stopper that has come into the league in their first year. With that said, he’s adequate defensively.”

On how he’ll complement Mike Bibby:
“Some teams are having success playing two small guards in their backcourt for fairly significant portions of the game. Dallas (Mavericks) have Devin Harris and Jason Terry, New Orleans did it with Speedy Claxton and Chris Paul, and you’re seeing more and more of that in terms of being able to get a more mobile and quicker team out there that handles the ball and has a lot of scoring potential as well.”

I don't know why people are questioning the pick. He plays a different role than Garcia and Martin. He give us a shooter, which we need, especially if Artest and Bonzi are playing post. I know people wanted a big man, but there wasn't one available who has the credentials of Douby, any big man would have been a stretch. Ditto with PG, Williams was compared by draftexpress to "a slower version of [Andre Miller]." Was there any point last year where Kings fans said, "you know what we really need, a slower, less defensive version of Andre Miller to back up Bibby and it would be ideal if he had a criminal record, was overweight, and had intesnity issues to boot." Rondo had no J and that's the last thing we need for this team.

Our biggest hole is shooting since the Peja trade. Give Petrie credit, the solutions we need at backup PG and C would not come from the draft, now we have more scoring and depth, exactly what we needed. A big compaint for us last season was a lack of depth. Douby may not address our two biggest needs, but no one at #19 would have. Now we have more depth and shooting, which is key. It's an added bonus that a number of analysts have Douby as their top sleeper.

It's worth noting that draftexpress said best case Dobuy is the next Gilbert Arenas and worst case is the next Eddie House. If Eddie House, a contibuter to both Sac and Phoenix the last two seasons, really is the WORST CASE, I think that's a great sign for us!

I agree. There wasn't much left in the 19th pick so signing Douby was the smartest and best choice. And plus if he can turn out to be either one of those guys I will be so happy!! :D
