Free agents become "free" on July 1. Teams can talk to them as of that date, but they cannot sign until July 14. During those two weeks - considered the July moratorium - the league figures the actual salary caps, luxury tax, MLE amounts, etc.

Teams can trade players before July 1. They just cannot trade players before the current season has finished. And the current season doesn't end until the trophy is decided.

In Larry Coon's CBA FAQ, question 88 gives a slightly different answer. It states 'teams are free to make a trade once their season has ended, but cannot trade players whose contracts are ending or could end due to an option.' This leaves a question whether it is the league season or just the season of the teams involved. Don't know the answer.

If a team is no longer in the playoffs then technically they can begin trades for the next season but they cannot trade with any team still playing AND they cannot trade any player with either an option OR a contract good through June 30, 2005.

I was trying to keep it brief, because you rarely see idle teams trade during the dead period. You will, however, undoubtedly see some trades on/shortly before Draft Day.

Just going by his "I may be big, but I'm nto stupid" comment or whatever. And I don't think he is. Opting out for him would be insane based on this past year, and he's said he thinks so, so made a safe assumption.

sono - First, welcome to the board.

I'll try and answer your questions:

1. Players can be listed on the free agency list even if they're currently playing in Europe. All it means is if they do opt to come to the NBA they come in as free agents.

2. Restricted Free Agents are players that are currently on a team and that team has first option on their services. (Simplified explanation.) For example, Dalembert is a Restricted Free Agent. That means he can get offers from other teams but the Sixers have the right - if they wish - to match any offer and retain him. If they choose not to match the offer, then he can go with the highest bidder.

3. There are team options and player options. Cuttino Mobley had a player option, meaning he could continue his contract for one more year or make himself a free agent with no restrictions. From what we know, he is going to opt out or decline the remaining year with the Kings to see what other kinds of offers he might receive. Bobby Jackson, on the other hand, has a team option, which means it's up to the team to decide if they want to keep him for the final year of his contract or let him loose. Petrie has already indicated the Kings intend to exercise the option on Jackson.
