I tend to believe Reef is lethal in the post. Furthermore, he doesn't have to be lethal to be effective.
Let's just dispel this notion that Brad Miller is some phenominal passer. He's a good passer, but his passing is of the easiest kind. In a quick algorythm it looks like this:
Sit at top of key
Receive ball
Look for cutter
If Cutter
.....pass
If No Cutter
.....If Bibby/Peja behind you on curl
..........pass
.....If not
..........shoot
This is not exactly high level passing. He's not breaking a defense down and passing. He's not drawing anyone in and dishing. He's standing still and passing. Very simple stuff.
Reef has shown an equal aptitude for this skill, matching Brad's numbers when asked to handle the ball up top.
The difference is Reef can and does draw people in and dish. He does break a defense down and kick.
More to the point if a team has 5 solid scoring threats it's more effencient to distribute the ball out side trafic not in it.
That's actually a terrible philosophy. No one gets into a rythm.
First, let's dispel the notion that we have 5 solid scoring threats. We have 3. Reef, Bibby, Peja. Those are the "solid" scoring threats. The other two are roleplayers that can score.
Second, distributing the ball evenly through 5 people is terrible. No one gets in rythm. Find a team with any sort of success where the ball doesn't center on one to two people, and I'll show you a team that will fold.
Third, teams that tend to win championships play inside out NOT outside in. Distributing the ball around the outside is great in theory, but it works a lot better once the inside has been established. The shots are more open and less contested. The lanes open up for driving. Why? Because they have to play honest with an inside threat.
