According to reports he's out for the year so that probably means microfracture surgery. IMO this doesn't bode well for him considering right now his game is based so much around his athelticism and explosiveness, he has to improve his skills like Amare did in order to come back from this. This is horrible and a huge setback for Portland. I'm sad for them, they don't deserve this.

Just heard on ESPN radio that he will be out until March and likely out for the season. Portland will have a news conference around 4pm.

I'll try to find the link.

Greg Oden , the Portland Trail Blazers' No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, will miss the 2007-2008 season after knee surgery on Thursday, two league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Oden, the 7-footer out of Ohio State, underwent exploratory surgery on his right knee on Thursday in Vancouver. The extent of the damage was not immediately clear, but Oden, one of the most celebrated young players in years, will be lost for the season.

The Blazers are expected to make an announcement shortly.

Oden likely out for rookie season after knee surgery
ESPN.com news services
Updated: September 13, 2007, 2:36 PM ET

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Celebrated Trail Blazers rookie center Greg Oden, the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, will likely miss the 2007-2008 season after undergoing knee surgery Thursday, the team said.

"Greg had an arthroscopy and a microfracture surgery today," team physician Dr. Don Roberts, who performed the surgery, said in a statement posted on the Trail Blazers' Web site. "He was found to have articular cartilage damage in his right knee. The area of injury was not large and we were able to treat it with microfracture, which stimulates the growth of cartilage.

"There are things about this that are positive for Greg. First of all, he is young. The area where the damage was is small and the rest of his knee looked normal. All those are good signs for a complete recovery from microfracture surgery."

The 7-foot center is expected to be on crutches for up to eight weeks. It likely will take 6 to 12 months for full recovery, the team said.

The Trail Blazers will hold a 4:30 p.m. ET news conference to discuss Oden's situation. The procedure was performed in Vancouver, Wash.

Oden described the knee pain in an entry Tuesday on his personal blog:

"On my vacation earlier this summer i got up off the couch and remember my knee having a sharp pain in it. That was about a month ago. I didn't tell anyone because i didn't want to seem like i was complaining or making excuses for anything. Plus i wasn't doing anything at the time i realized it hurt, so i figured it couldn't be anything big.

"After a couple of weeks, i had to finally tell someone so i went to St. Vincent's Sports Performance (where i worked out at before draft) and got my knee looked at. That was right before i moved to Portland for good. My knee was swollen since i was there. I finally just said that i need to tell my trainer because this is not normal. We went to the doctor's the next day to get a MRI and that night me and my mom ended up in the doctor's office being told that I have to get surgery. It's a light one, just a scoop, but still it's just another setback. I would like for me to be playing and not seem like i'm a high-maintenance player, but things just keep popping up."

This is Oden's second health problem since the Blazers drafted him in June. He had a tonsillectomy in July after struggling in two Las Vegas summer league games.

Oden, despite being hampered by a wrist injury during his freshman (and only) season at Ohio State, averaged 15.7 points and 9.6 rebounds in leading the Buckeyes to the national championship game. He had 25 points and 12 rebounds in the loss to Florida.

The Trail Blazers were the surprise winners of the NBA draft lottery and chose Oden over Texas forward Kevin Durant, who went to Seattle.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Since we saw Webber go through this, I hope they don't try and rush him back too soon.

I feel sorry for the Blazers fans. I cannot even begin to imagine what it would be like to hear that news... oh wait. We did hear the news and it hurt like hell and Webb wasn't the one bright light on our horizon.

:(

I agree with you on the point where the Portland should not rush him back. And to be honest, the team aren't going to be THAT good to have a reason to rush him back anyway. (As in, unlike our championship chasing team back then.) He's a rookie, if healed properly, he should still have a bright future ahead of him.

But yeah, it's very sad to see such a talent to go through this. :(:(:(

Sad, sad. My best wishes go out to Greg and the Blazers. I know how painful it was for us losing CWebb to the same problem. But at Oden's young age he, like Amare, should come thru fine.

Yes, we did...and on top of it, we saw the face of our franchise crumble to the court, along with our championship hopes and dreams, live on TV with all of us watching. I have nothing but sympathy for the Blazers and the city of Portland...and hope that Greg can recover fully from this, much like Amare did in Phoenix.

Wow.. Oden is probally going to lose a step but still be a good center for years to come. Amare has lost a bit of his leaping ability, but judging on how well he recovered I think Oden can do the same.

I am still in shock though.... this is major news.

Wow - arguably one of the the 2 or 3 most anticipated rookies of the past 10-15 years and he's gone for the year.

I wish the best for the kid and Blazer fans. Knee injuries are bad, bad, bad news.

I don't know that I'd feel sorry for the Blazers. They just had one of the best drafts ever, they have two young centers who are both going to be locks for an annual double-double, they have the reigning rookie of the year, and their franchise player #1 pick won't play a game this year so they'll probably add another high lotto pick and get a nice little two for one deal next season. I'd trade anyone on our roster for Greg Oden right now, knee surgery or no. Why feel sorry for the Blazers?

Well that was a wasted 1st round pick. Oden will never be the player he could have been now. the will get the 1st pick again next year now. No Oden no Randolph heh they might win 10 games.

Why feel sorry for the Blazers?

Because we've been in a similar situation and we know the way it feels to be kicked in the gut out of the blue. I feel sorry for the fans. The team will probably survive but the fans had put a lot of hopes on Oden and their season ticket sales had soared. A lot of those people aren't going to feel quite so happy about the situation.

Imagine how Cleveland would have felt had this happened to Lebron before he ever played a game in a Cavaliers uniform...

Let me preface this by saying that Oden may still be the next Bill Russell.

Having said that, I warned people on this board and in my personal life last winter - spring that I thought fans and the media were getting too excited about Oden (and Durant for that matter). I was called young, naive, ignorant and turning a blind eye to his future stardom (all of which hurt my feelings;)). After all, why could I not see that he was destined to be the next Ewing, Admiral, The Dream etc? It is because crap like this happens as well all other kinds of stuff. The NBA in particular (and sports in general) are just so highly unpredictable due to a high degree of randomness.

Again, I am not saying that he will be a bust. I could not predict that. Although, given that he has had a major knee issue and a major wrist issue all before enduring an arduous NBA season is cause for concern. Heck, he has not even played a full college season.

I told a very good buddy of mine after the draft that it would not shock me if Hawes ended up having a better career than Oden. Again, not predicting - just saying it well within the possibilities. He told me I was crazy. Maybe. But then again, crap happens.

Ouch. Sucks for Oden, Portland and Portland fans. Fortunately he's young and stands as good a chance as you possibly can as recovering fully from this. From what we've seen in another best case scenario is Stoudemire taking nearly 2 full years to get back to being his "old self", so that has to be a little frustrating as well...

The other silver lining is that Portland may end up with another very good draft pick after next season... :)

Still, very unfortunate. I was looking forward to watching him play.

Are you saying you predicted that he'd need microfracture surgery (something his doctors had no idea he'd need until they went in on what they assumed was a run of the mill cleaning out procedure)?

If so, good job. Every team in the NBA will be wanting to hire you shortly.

If not, well, even a stopped clock is right twice a day ;) No offense meant of course, I'm just saying it's easy to say an unproven player will or won't be a bust....

This really sucks for Portland. Wonder if they'll be able to refund all those new season-ticket packages they sold on the wide shoulders of Oden?

I think just as many people are overreacting to call him a bust as people overreacted to call him the next best center in the NBA. We just don't know. This is a major setback to be sure but he's a young player and young guys seem to rebound better from this surgery than older players. Plus the surgery doesn't take away his size and to a certaint extent that's more important than all the other skills he brings to the table.

Plus the Blazers are in a nice spot Oden or not, so I'm not going to feel too sorry for them. If Oden turns out to be just a mediocre player they still have a nice young nucleus that is probably better than the Kings have. This could help them net another top draft pick next year and push their coach out the door wich would likely improve them down the road.

you know what... I had a feeling he wasn't going to play this season. I don't know, everything just seemed way to good to be true for those cursed Blazers.

Sucks for them. Maybe they get another #1 pick and are just completely stacked for years to come, that would probably make up for it.

There is indeed a potential silver lining to all this. I consider microfracture surgery to be primitive barbarism that in 50 years will be looked at the way bloodletting is looked at today, but the record for young players going through the surgery is much MUCH better than for older guys.

IF Oden comes out of it ok, then the Blazers might well land themselves another nice juicy lottery pick in ayear where the best talents happen to play the one positon where they may not have their stud of the future already in place: PG. IF Oden comes out of it ok, having him miss this season, which is largely irrelevant, and return next year to a potentially even more stacked young lineup might not slow their ascent down much if at all.

Of course he's got to come out of it ok.

Just when I think the King's summer of misery couldn't get any worse, I realize things could definitely be worse. I could be a Blazers fan. ;)

While this is a huge disappointment for the Blazers, and no doubt a huge disappointment to Oden, the doctors expect 100% recovery with no side effects. The lesion is said to be very small.

I feel sorry for Oden. He has so much potential and for this surgery to keep him out of the season is terrible. Hopefully, he can fully recover from this surgery and prepare for the 2008-2009 season. I only wish only the best for him! :)
