Northern California Trivia Thread: D-Mass wins!

I do all of this Northern California trivia stuff and thought it would be fun to see if any of you can get the correct answers. I will post a question about Nor Cal (Sacramento to the Oregon Border) and once the correct answer is posted, I will post another question. This is not an officially sanctioned TDOS, more like just for fun, so if you have trivia questions to ask, drop them in here!

Question 1:
As a kid, I could never get the name of this city and another city around 100 miles as the crow flies from there (but the cities are 246 miles apart by road) Which was which? This city supposedly got it's name from the back side of a vendor's canvas sign with one letter obscured.
What city is this?

Question 2:

This is a sad tale... pretty important to remember, so I won't make it too tough...

In the 1860's Indians in the Chico, California area were told to take a march 100 miles over a mountain range to this distant destination or be shot. 450+ Indians began this march and under 300 made it. And when they arrived, there were not enough supplies to last the winter... truly tragic. Where was their destination?

I think I remember it being Covelo...if I'm wrong, don't blame me - I'm from Orland.

NoBonus, trivia is always fun. I hereby sanction your games as Official for TDOS. :D

Keep it up, you're doing fine and I have already learned something.

Question #3
This town was named in 1857 by drawing city names from a hat. As luck would have it, this town ended up being named for the first Federal irrigation project in the West. What town is this?

I found that Orland was one project, but was coinfused by sites that said the Newlands Irrigation project was the first project under the Newlands Act of 1902. Later the name was changes to the Reclamation Act.

Question #4:

A famous roundhouse man named Carlos from Oklahoma married a former Deputy Sheriff from this Northern California city. Together they had twins, but at the holidays there could be nine stockings by the fireplace; and maybe that fireplace is in her hometown... they bought or built a place in her hometown as a vacation home.

What is the name of her hometown?

Question #4 (5)

This one is really, really hard.

This town was named for a man named with the first name James who discovered the first mine in the area and established the town under a different name in 1857. Between 1857 and 1884 the town's name was changed to goat related name, then to it's final name to commemorate the miner, first name James.

By 1884 this town was already a near memory, as it was described as "an old mining town", "only mined by the Chinese", and only occupied by "one or two ranchers".

Probably the most famous one time resident of this town was the Union Pacific's Nomadic Photographer.

Cretaceous fossils were found here.

There is a 70's music icon/crooner who's website name is the same name as this town

Question #5
When the city of Reno, NV decided to tear down it's classic Reno arch and replace it with a much tackier arch with neon lights and sparkles, to which northern California city did the arch go?

Willits!

I know because for years probably my fave long drive in summer is from Sac to Mendocino Russian Gulch State Park and beach. I love to do it when it's around 100 degrees in the valley and then around 70 or so on the beautiful beach. A nice drive up I-5 to Williams, cut off on Hwy 20 along very scenic upper Clear Lake and southern Mendocino Nat'l Forest (sometimes stop for hike or camp around amazing Snow Mountain Wilderness). Then it's a short hop up Hwy 101 to Willits and across to coast with another short hop down Hwy 1 to Russian Gulch. Takes about 4 hours to get there going kind of fast, but that's usually with a stop or two along the way - which you can't help because of all the stunning views. Can't wait to go again sometime this summer!

Question #6

This super famous celebrity's mother moved to this Northern California city when her and the father of this celeb divorced. The celebrity's name, first and last, has the exact same number of characters in the two-word city name and the space is in the same spot for both.

What city is this? and who is the celebrity?

There's nothing nice about that drive up I-5. Easily the ugliest freeway in the country.

That being said, Willits is my favorite place to gas up when I'm driving south.
