I don't know about the rest of you, but whenever I watch or hear about a women's basketball story, my eyes/ears/mind perks up. And this is especially true when a male athlete says that he is impressed by watching the women play. Do you feel likewise?
Anyway, a recent example happened over the weekend when I was watching a weekly TV show called "Behind The Shield", which is produced by the Oakland Raiders football team's publicity and public relations office.
They did a segment on I was watching on Lamont Jordan, the Raiders' running back. I just happened to tape the show, when his segment appeared and quite unexpectedly, he talked about his admiration for women's b-ball!
This is what Lamont said about the women's b-ball team on the show:
* * * * * * *
NARRATOR: Jordan's love for his alma mater [University of Maryland] is strong. And he has a particularly strong passion for the women's basketball team. The Lady Terrapins' love for the game, and their unselfishness are traits Jordan admires and sees it in the 2006 Oakland Raiders.
[Screen shows footage of highlights during the final minutes of the Maryland Lady Terrapins' overtime win over Duke University in the NCAA Championship Final Game earlier this year.]
JORDAN LAMONT: I love women's basketball. I love my women Terps. And the most important thing that I can gather from watching them play, is that they play like a team. And I kind of feel like that I sense some of that here [at the Raiders' pre-season training camp]. I got an opportunity to witness my girls winning the National Championship. I kind of feel like that we're headed in that same direction. I feel the excitement, I feel the energy...[non-women's basketball stuff snipped]
* * * * * * *
He didn't go very much into details, but the fact that he appreciate the women's game, is encouraging.
For his sake, I'm glad that he feels the Maryland Lady Terps gives him the inspiration for this season. But unfortunately for him, he fumbled while the Raiders lost on opening tonight, 27-0!
