Defensive tackle Franklin officially signs with 49ers
Aubrayo Franklin will fill a gaping hole in the middle of the 49ers' defensive line.
The 49ers officially signed nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin to a three-year, $6 million contract this morning. Although you might not be too familiar with Franklin, he is expected to be a very important piece of the 49ers' defensive puzzle.
This is generally when I'd cite some of his statistics. But with a player such as Franklin, it's not about statistics. After all, in 13 games last season with the Ravens, he had 23 tackles and no sacks.
Here's one stat that does matter: Franklin is 6-foot-1, 320 pounds.
In signing Franklin, the 49ers have a player to play nose tackle in their 3-4 defense. In coach Mike Nolan's first two years, he didn't have anyone like him. Franklin can go for weeks without getting a tackle, but he might be doing everything asked of him.
The 49ers need a big guy in the middle who doesn't get pushed off the line of scrimmage. He needs to be able to be a two-gap player - he needs to be strong enough to be responsible for both gaps on either side of the center. He needs to be able to hold the center and, at times, a guard to allow the inside linebackers to step up and make plays closer to the line of scrimmage.
That is why Anthony Adams arrived at the 49ers' practice facility yesterday to get his shoulder pads and name plate from his locker. Adams was a good player as a defensive tackle in a 4-3, but he was not cut out to be a 3-4 nose tackle.
"You have to play with strength," Nolan said in late December. "Some guys are more penetrating type of guys and some guys play more of the power game. In (Adams') case, he plays more of the penetrating type of game. That's what he did in college and that's what he did here. That doesn't really suit us right now. ... there has to be a little more dirty work."
Franklin has the physique and mentality to get dirty.

The 49ers also re-signed wide receiver Bryan Gilmore, who started three games last season in place of Antonio Bryant. Gilmore caught just eight passes for 150 yards and one touchdown as the No. 3 receiver. He also rushed seven times for 94 yards.
