"He runs a 4.84 [40-yard dash], which is not horrible for a quarterback, but it's not Lamar Jackson,
Justin Fields, the elite guys today,
Trey Lance. But his 10-yard split in the first 10 [yards] of the 40 is a 1.55. That is 95th percentile for quarterbacks; that is short-area quickness that makes you miss."
This is the added intangible that the other 2 lack - especially Garrapolo who is close to worst in the league - Purdy's got the 'circles' going....not as good as Wilson or Murray but close to Mahomes and Rodgers. This can buy him an extra 2s to get the throw off.
Aside from playoffs, another big deal for the team as a result of Purdy's quick development is they can focus on another DB in the draft, and not have to worry about QB. I would try to extend Purdy immediately in this upcoming off-season mid-to-higher level contract (say 3 more years) that pays him well but saves the organization top dollar contract for Bosa. On top of the extension, I'd give Purdy a significant bump-up on his current contract as future starter in good faith. If they wait 2 seasons, there's a fair chance he'll require "star rate" - top 12 type of pay. Another team will now overpay for Garrapolo, unless he wants to take a substantial pay-cut as a backup. That seems unlikely, so Lance by bad fortune of injury will be backup, aside from the outside chance that Purdy has a complete meltdown in the Wild-Card or Divisional game - quite unlikely based on his larger 5 game track-record Everyone and their dog knows 49ers pass defense is horrible and would be their reason for potential defeat - Lions or Packers and especially Vikings will not be cake walks, all with solid or great passing games. Othe flipside, the 49ers run defense is well suited for NFC East teams which are run-heavier, but those will certainly plan to pass if facing the 49ers. Purdy will be called on to perform well and will likely have to bail-out the defense for a change like vs. the Raiders.
