A case could be made for tanking the remainder of the season for draft positioning - and possibly drafting a QB. Garoppolo is a quasi game manager. He's not really starting-material quality-wise - even last year with a Super-Bowl defense and top running game he was mid-level. Missing the big throw in the big game to pull the game close to level. and a pedestrian big game.
His scrambling ability and happy-feet necessitates having a stellar offensive line. He's towards the bottom of the league in scrambling ability and more mistake prone under duress. On top of all that Mullins has shown he's not even meriting of a backup position. Currently Garrapolo is the 12th highest paid QB in the NFL. He's not alone in getting overpaid - Deshaun Watson, Jared Goff, Kirk Cousins, Carson Wentz, Dak Prescott -in front of Garrapolo all overpaid. The actual value though is how many games can you attribute the win to his play? This season? Maybe 1 win so far, the Rams game - the team's best game of the year (and maybe for the season) - in this case too you could make the case the defense was more deserving for game-ball. Last season with Superbowl team? 5 games. Last Post Season? none of the games. When the chips are down Garrapolo is too inconsistent. Time to roll the dice in the draft. The 49ers may bring him back next year and then entertain the decision. They could also draft a successor this offseason and bring Garoppolo back - his time being 'on the clock > put up or pack up. Not an easy job being a pro QB - all the glory but all the blame too.
