NBA legend George Mikan dies at 80

NBA's first dominant big man dead at 80 June 2, 2005 SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- George Mikan, professional basketball's first dominant big man who led the Minneapolis Lakers to five NBA championships, has died, family members said Thursday. He was 80.

Six-foot-10 with thick glasses, Mikan was so effective as a center at DePaul that he forced the NCAA to adopt the goaltending rule.

Mikan had suffered from diabetes and kidney failure. One leg was amputated several years ago, and he recently was hospitalized for six weeks for treatment of a diabetes wound in the other leg. He also underwent kidney dialysis three days a week.

Last Saturday, he was moved from the hospital to a rehabilitation center, his son, Terry, said. He died Wednesday night, according to family members.

Mikan's Lakers won five of the first six NBA titles after the league was formed in 1948. He averaged 23.1 points per game in seven seasons with Minneapolis before retiring because of injuries in 1956. Mikan was the league's MVP in its inaugural 1948-49 season, when he averaged 28.3 points in leading the Lakers to the NBA title.

A statue was erected in honor of the NBA Hall of Famer outside the Target Center in Minneapolis.

In recent years, Mikan has spoke out against the small pensions given to those who played in the league before 1965. Terry Mikan said most of his father's awards and memorabilia had been sold. Mikan received a monthly pension check of $1,000, his son said.

First NBA Superstar. Will be missed

I've got an autographed picture of him on my "Laker Wall" at work. :(

My condolances to his family too. He was a true pioneer in the NBA.

My condolences to his family and I think it's very sad they had to sell his memorabilia.

heck yah, you do all you can to help trandscend a sport and then you only get 1000/month. frickin tragic Stern shoulda done somethin about that.

anyone hear shaq offer to pay for his funeral. pretty nice gesture.

Ya... very dissapointing that he has died. I liked the thing they had on ESPN a month ago about him and shows how crooked the NBAPA and NBA are.

Ya.

The think on ESPN of him was very touching. But it was ironic that in one of the clips of him during a game you can see my freinds grandpa guarding him.

I've probably seen him more in terms of interviews and halftime ceremonies and such than you guys, but he was an extremely nice/humble man who enjoyed every bit of the accolades he got towards the end. He was beaming when he was placed on the 50 Greatest team and had his number quasi-retired by the Laker org. He described one night that Auerbach yelled "Get him off the court! There's a game to be played!" when one of his goons took George out and there wasn't the slightest hint of anger in his voice. I appreciate the gesture from Shaq, I don't appreciate him using it as an opportunity to mug for the cameras like he always does with his charity. This is a funeral, not an Xmas toy giveaway.

I wonder what season tickets went for in 1947?

I think a lot of teams were barnstorming back then. Played in many different venues, ballrooms, theaters, small crap arenas, etc. I wonder if season tix were actually offered.
