[NBA] Comments that don't warrant their own thread (2011-2012 season)

Now 4 straight outstanding, stunning performances - and tonight tops it off by outdueling Bryant (34pts Black Mamba / 38pts Yellow Mamba). I love all the Madison Garden signs in support of Lin and chants of "MVP."

In watching his game I like his cool, assassins mentality - and smiling slicing and dicing. He sizes up his defender and if it's a mismatch strikes quickly and if it's not there, simply finds the mismatch elsewhere with the right pass - that's incredible intelligence and court awareness. Very, very talented PG at 23 years of age and built nicely at legit 6'3" 200lbs.

Jeremy Lin is definitely for real and possibly the next Steve Nash - his Knicks coach can only thank his lucky stars.
one of the things i like about his game (coincidentally something nash does) is NOT picking up his dribble when he is stopped under the rim or something isnt there. this is one flaw i see a lot when jimmer handles the ball. if the shot is not there, dribble out and find an open man instead of stopping in a crowd of big men.

I'm not the type to be up in arms over s*** people would consider racist cause I'm not sensitive at all. Even this doesn't upset me, but I feel that the name "yellow mamba" is super racist.

I have to agree with PurpleHaze. The nickname is NOT racist, IMHO. If anything, it's a pretty cool tribute to a young undrafted player in comparison to one of the best to ever play the game.

Until/unless Jeremy Lin says the term is racist or offensive, I think some people are truly making much ado about nothing.

i figured he watched the game. there was a fan holding up a sign that said yellow mamba. i assumed it was a clever play on kobe's nickname and was meant as praise more than anything

That's all it was, a play on words. Jokingly they call Brain Scalabrine the White Mamba.

Connecting this back to the Kings, Lin was apparently going to be cut before his explosion so that he could be replaced by Former Kings summer league pg Donald Sloan

Or the Caveman for that matter (no matter how fitting that moniker is for Chris Kaman)
Yep, it only gives the word "racist" less meaning and credibility when thrown around so loosely. Not unlike the word "hater" also thrown around far too casually. To call someone a racist or hater is very powerful and should branded for obvious, blatant offenders. Otherwise, it's just another form of malice not unlike real racists or real haters.

are you feeling alright? I never knew you thought so highly of Kobe. I had to check the date to make sure it was not dec 12 2012

Woj had an article calling Jeremy Lin one of the greatest NBA stories of ALL TIME.

ok, he's been terrific, but... really?

Nick Young had a stretch of big scoring games last year i can't remember a single article.

I really hope he carries on playing like this, because he's a very likable kid with a great attitude, but how desperate are New York for a story this season? Wow.

That's kind of missing the point. Scoring is part of it but it is that his play has transfered into wins. The Knicks were struggling horribly before Lin's emergence their record was 8-15.

It's been a great story because:

-NYC is on a 4 game win streak since his emergence, 3 and a half of those games were without the two big stars they traded for.
-He is an undrafted player
-Comes from a school that hasn't produced an NBA player in 60 years
-Comes from a culture that presses academics over sports on their youth
-Was almost cut again before D'Antoni decided to just give him a chance
-Was seen initially regarded as a novelty player in order to draw in fans

You could add things like race issues, him playing in the biggest Basketball Mecca in the world and having Kobe come in to play the villain (starting with a dismissive interview about him to get a psychological edge) to silence this hype and Lin still not shrinking.

It all looks like something scripted from a movie. I'd say that makes for some kind of a good story.

It's all about context. No racism in this instance IMO. Yellow has stood for many things when referring to Asians, most not racist so it shouldn't thought as racism here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow#Cultural_associations for a quick link to some of them.

Understand where you're coming from, but in this case the examples given in the wiki link are really not relevant at all to Lin. The Asian references there are about as equivalent as comparing either a Russian to an American Caucasian or said Caucasian to a Mexican Latino.

Black mamba is not racist. Because Kobe is Black. And Black people refer to themselves as Black. Asians, at least from my perspective, don't like being called yellow.

Hey, not fair! I rooted for Kobe in the Olympics, remember? I may not like him but I'm not delusional about his skills or impact on the game.

:)

If Lin continues his play, and establishes himself as a player whose not hype, then the Rubio vs Lin matchup will be an interesting thing to look for in the future. Two high BBIQ PG's going at each other, Nash vs Kidd 2.0 maybe?

--he should wear leather pants. He’s the type of guy who should wear leather pants, some nice shoes and change his fashion. You’re Jeremy Lin, for godsakes. You know what I’m saying? You know? Put down that law book, stop reading the New York Times and start reading the Daily News. Newsday, that’s the one. I like that one because there’s always color in that one. What else? Wall Street Journal. Get some swag. You’re in New York City. Put your hat to the back, too. Put your hat on backwards. Come to practice with your pants sagging and just tell them, 'I don’t feel like practicing.' Practice? You know? Practice? And wear an Iverson jersey. You know? Come to practice with a cigar. Lit. 'I’m Jeremy Lin.' You know?
