NBA.com: Kings take big gamble with rookie guard Evans

Watcha wanna hear from a #4 draft pick. But his size may be his biggest asset. Now if he can develop a dangerous spot up jumper nobody will be able to guard him. And if Coach can get the "kids" to move without the ball..........

Good piece. No surprises. TDOS is nearly over.............hooray!! :D

Damm I miss Coop.. Nice to see a well writen article for a change. And accurate as well.. And, thank God the TDOS is almost over..:)

This is kind of interesting. SHC telling us we took a huge gamble, and then Stein and the guys over at ESPN all say we made the 'safe' pick in Evans cause we know we'll get something ( Rubio was too much of a risk ) ..

Either way, im glad the season is almost here and the articles continue to pile up.

Nice article. I'm not getting carried away since he's still only 19. I'd be surprised if Tyreke Evans makes a BIG impact his first NBA season, although on the Kings it may be a bit easier since he'll be part of a talent pool that only produced 17 wins last season.

Just go to the hole, his main strength, dish to open mates without all the turnovers, get to the line, making those freebies, play hard-nose D and develop some leadership skill at least like Cisco exhibits as perhaps the only King with "that attitude." No doubt Evans size is an asset but it's not overwhelming at 6'5" - he's not 6'6" or certainly a legit 6'7" like Cisco or K-Mart. Maybe in about 4-5 years we'll be calling him the second coming of another sensational King at legit 6'5"- Mitch Richmond.

One thing that seems very unlikely is that Evans will superman materialize into solid NBA point guard. If he does great, but that usually takes several years to climb the ladder to elite lead guard status, regardless if we call him a combo or point. Hmmm, how long did it take Richmond to become "great?" A few years at least and he had the "Run DMC" crew to help propel him to All-Star level.

...If Evans turns into the dynamic, physical two-way player many teams think he can be, it could help turn an entire franchise. He can bring new energy and become the first Kings guard pushing the ball down opponents' throats since Jason Williams. He can be new hope for a roster that has to prove it's something other than the heartless group that rolled over last season. And, of course, he can rescue the position.,,,

Now that's writing. And it's obvious he actually knows something about the topic upon which he is writing. Nice to see Howard-Cooper land on his feet away from the local rag.

I think they took a gamble.. Whether it pays off is anyones gues.s

Ok, I don't want to get the 'how many games I think the Kings will win this year' poll going, but I do see us in the 30 wins range and I do see Tyreke playing an integral part in our turn upward this year. I can't wait till next week when camp begins! Great article Mr. Howard-Cooper!

Nice article Scott Howard-Cooper. :) This made me laugh...

The Kings needed an upgrade at point guard, what with Beno Udrih attempting to run the offense from the fetal position.....

...and the Kings kept Voisin???

Great article by Scott. Really brings up what "everyone's talking about" but in a much more well-written manner. I think Amick's doing a decent job - and working very hard - but he never seems to directly address the issues at hand...maybe that his editor or his style, who knows. Either way, good job.

I like Tyreke's laid back mindset, but not liking the fact that he doesn't seem dedicated to becoming a team leader and point guard. I guess that's fine, because he'll move over to the two eventually, but typically, when someone wants to become a point & wants to become a leader, they say it - especially in the press.

Of course, nothing's for certain yet, but Tyreke's body of work speaks for itself - dominant ballhandler, Iverson-only-pass-if-I-can't-score type. What I'm hoping for is some offensive creativity by Westphal's staff to hide these perceived weaknesses & create some enjoyable basketball.

Got no problem with this article, but one note: all this praise for SHC's writing...I think this is absence makes the heart grow fonder stuff here. Next we're going to be wistfully recalling the beauty of Marty McNeal's prose in his columns. :p I'm sorry but Scott Howard Cooper is often a shaky and erratic writer. He may be a decent reporter or whatnot and often chooses subjects well, but his writing style itself is often borderline incoherent. This was easily one of his better efforts in that regard, getting his jokes in without meandering about or mixing up his tones. Maybe he's got a better editor at nba.com than with the Bee, who knows.

First it should be pointed out that Voisin doesn't work for the Kings, she works for the Bee..

Secondly, where in the article did you gleen that Evans wasn't dedicated to being a leader or a point guard?

"There's a lot of people out there, they know that I'm good but they don't think I can play the point," Evans said. "They think I'm a pure two-guard. But I'm just a natural player. I go out on the court and I get the job done."
He said Flynn and Jennings were better true point guards coming out, but that, "I'm one of the top players in the draft." The plan is to "push myself to be a natural point guard."

Where in that statement does he say anything about not wanting to lead or become a point guard? Sorry, but it sounded like just the opposite to me, but maybe I'm having a comprehension problem.

Well compared to Marty McNeal, Coop is the next Hemingway. What I miss about Coop is that he was one of the more NBA knowledgable writers on the Bee. He would actually give us information instead of just speculation. So I didn't read him for his prose, but for his info. Their best writer IMHO was Kriedler. Why they got rid of him is beyond me.

Kreidler is far and away the best writer. I like to listen to him on the Rise Guys, too. Definitely an upgrade to that show.

Maybe I miss Scoop, because he's better than some of what's left at the Bee. ;)

I was wondering if I should start reading the Bee more often - I'm guessing the answer is no?

I'm excited about Evans though. I think he's got a huge potential. I agree we're not going to see him doing miracles his first season in, but hopefully he'll be very interesting to watch as he matures. From what I've seen he's got a good character too, which I think is important.

All you need to know about the Bee is that Kriedler was recently ranked the second best sports writer in Sacramento for this year by the Sacramento News and Review (behind Amick). What is interesting about that is that Kriedler hasn't written anything in Sacramento for 2 years.

I'll go down the intelligent-clever-brilliant route and say this:

Ah.
