Kajun, good point in bring up 'irreversible' with monica bulluci, this movie is very very disturbing. I mean this movie is pretty hard to swallow for the weak hearted. I have a friend who could not even watch some scenes. I have another who considers that among his favorites. interesting flick

Well if disturbing is the criteria, go see "Turtles Can Fly" some immages in that film would not leave for over a week.

u know whats a nother trippy movie? momento(memento)... its with guy pierce.. have u guys seen it?
Memento is a brilliant film. After Priscilla, LA Confidential and Memento I was really expecting big things from Guy Pearce, but then he made The Time Machine. Poor Guy.

Not too many filmmakers can get away with that.
From Memento, to Batman Begins... Christopher Nolan may be on that list before too long. It will be interesting to see what he does next.

I think I know that one...

Is that the Japanese flick with the super innocent looking girl who gets all obssessive and goes completely nutty at the end of the film?

If so... yeeshies. That was just wrong.

As for my disturbing picks, I think maybe I'm hard to disturb. The only things that came to mind were Barton Fink and Tom Hanks' attempted dentistry in Castaway. An ice skate and a rock are just not appropriate tools.

Did anyone watch that one Korean film called OLDBOY? I read it was disturbing yet so good with many rave reviews. I would have watched it but heard it was quite brutal.

The violence and the rape were incredibly brutal. Turns out the blood from the beating and some explicit parts from the rape were digitally added, but it looked very, very real to me.

Nolan will definitely be the director to follow.

Pretty amazing how, at times, he made you forget you're watching a superhero flick. Batman Begins comes off as very character-driven.

I like Tim Burton's adaptations as well, but that was a little bit more style than substance. Danny Elfman's soundtrack is a winner though.

I think it says something when Christian Bale will be looking forward to the sequel. He's generally very picky about his projects, and I think he would generally shun playing in a sequel.

It's about a guy and a gal who start to date, and then it turns out that the gal isn't what she seems, yes. See here. By the way, pretty much every Japanese girl looks innocent ;)

The director of that flick, Takashi Miike, makes many disturbing films. Some border on downright weird, like Ichi the Killer, which is just completely wack. He also made a film with the title Zebraman. Go figure.

I have Barton Fink on DVD - one of my favorites. I'm a big fan of the Coen Brothers (O Brother Where Art Thou is my favorite) but they also feature some of my favorite actors on a regular basis. IMO, John Tuturro is incredibly underrated as an actor. His "Jesus" is perhaps the best character in Big Lebowski, but his work in Barton Fink is phenomenal.

I agree completely. Barton Fink is one that I own (ditto Lebowski, O Brother, etc.) and I think its a great film. I was considerably younger when I first saw Barton Fink, however, and it got under my skin quite a bit. The pacing is such that you always have that unsettled feeling that something is just around the corner. Very effective.

As for the Coen Brothers, unfortunately The Ladykillers and Intolerable Cruelty knocked them off my list of directors who can't go wrong. I think that Tarantino, Burton and Jarmusch are the only directors now whose entire catalogue is on my "must own" list (Kundun knocked Scorsese off, and Solaris knocked Soderbergh off).

I saw 'Must Love Dogs' last night. It was a pretty decent chick flick. Very funny, clever, and touching. Great performances by all, especially Christopher Plummer, who deserves and Oscar nomination! But it is very much a chick flick and I wouldn't recommend it to guys or to people who have never experienced the single life.

I took my cousin and sister to see sky high. It was good in a teenage-disney sort of way.

I also saw Hustle and Flow. It's a really good movie. It's worthy of some awards. Terrence Howad does a brilliant job. It was very beleivable.

i watched best in show. that movie is hilarious. i can't wait to watch "waiting for guffman" and "a mighty wind".

"A Mighty Wind" is funny too. If you're old enough to remember the folkies music scene, this does a good take off. And of course these guys do all their own singing and playing of instruments.

If you haven't already seen it, you should add "This is Spinal Tap" to the list of Christopher Guest movies. A Mighty Wind is funny, but IMO Spinal Tap is in another league.

I noticed someone mentioned Memento. I really liked that movie in the theaters and bought it when it came out on DVD, but I can't remember the last time I watched it. I started noticing problems with the plot and now I can't suspend my disbelief enough to enjoy it.

A similar, but less ambitious movie is "The Usual Suspects" which I think I like better. However, (and not to give away the movie to anyone who hasn't seen it) my best friend left the theater angry, claiming that it was a waste of two hours because of the realization made at the end of the film. I still like it, and I think it holds up to scrutiny afterwards better than Memento.

Kevin Spacey is arguably the best under-rated actor in film today. His choice of roles is always interesting. I think The Usual Suspects is one of his best.

My only problem with Memento after multiple viewings is that the gimmick starts to feel a little too gimmicky. I've watched it several times (probably not at all in the last year or so) and I would probably watch it more now if I had the ability to watch it without the backwards timeline. Still like the film. Still like the originality of the structure. But, the last few times I watched it were probably more for the strength of Pearce's performance, than the strength of the film itself.

I tend to get fixated on films, however, and watch them until I've completely torn them apart and ruined them for myself. Then I ignore them for a few years, come back to them and remember why I liked them in the first place.

I love Kevin Spacey (although Beyond the Sea bothered me), and was very impressed by his performance in The Usual Suspects. However, Seven still stands out to me as one of his best performances. He just absolutely blew me away in his few scenes.

I think my favorite performances of his have been in (not necessarily in order of anything but my memory):

The Usual Suspects
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
The Life of David Gale
The Shipping News
K-PAX
Pay It Forward

and the first movie I remember seeing him in: See No Evil, Hear No Evil

He played Jim Bakker in a made-for-TV movie that gave me the creeps because his portrayal of the evangelist was so realistic.

I just checked the Internet Movie Data Base and saw there aren't really many of his films where I didn't care for his performance, even if I didn't like the film...

Now I still have to find a way to see Swimming with Sharks.

Edit to add "Pay It Forward" - thanks, HC.

VF21 how can you POSSIBLY list KS top performances and NOT include Pay it Forward? BTW I would also lobby for Seven and Bobby Daren as well.

Charlie and th4e Chocolate Factory was brilliant! Better than teh first one was made. Jhonny Depp as Willy Winka was a great thing to watch and so did all the charachters for the 5 golden ticket holders.

I watched a ton of old DVDs lately and one of the movies that stood out to me was Face/Off starring Nicolas Cage and John Travolta. IMO it's one of the best movies of 1998...lol There's a significant amount of vulgar language and sexual references, so it's not your everyday movie that you can watch with your kids. It's quite scary actually, Nicolas Cage and John Travolta switch faces through a new type of futuristic surgery.

Anywho..another movie that I found entertaining was ..Win a Date with Tad Hamilton. It's more of a chick flick, and it's directed by the people who brought you the Legally Blonde movies.

I'm going to watch Taxi and Be Cool tomorrow so I'll get back to you guys on those two movies. ;)

i want to see that movie, but i'm so nervous. i LOVED the orignal, i just loved gene wilder, and while i think johnny deep is a fantastic actor, i just don't think he can pull off what wilder did. i will just have to watch it to find out :D my friend said it was good. i do like the kid who plays charlie, he was great in " finding neverland" ( I LOVE THAT MOVIE!!!!)

Wow too many to quote. It would take forever on this computer.

I am a huge fan of the horror/pych thriller and can't wait to see Devils Rejects. I have yet to watch 1000 corpes. One of my favorite all time classics was the Changeling with George C. Scott, who happens to be brilliant in Exorcist 3 with Brad Dourif(if they gave away oscars for horrow films, Brad would've won that year hands down). DO NOT RENT/BUY/OWN Session 9. TERRIBLE MOVIE. What a waste.

Someone advise of some more great horror flicks to watch please.

Also, watched Bride and Prejudice over the weekend. This is the Indian version of Pride and Prejudice as a musical. Bollywood from the get go but what a fun film. Beautiful costumes and colors and Jane Austin did not write a boring story that's for sure. The actor from The Ring plays Mr. Darcy and what a classic hollywood looker he is. Naveen Andersen from Lost is in it as well. Ashanti does a wonderful song in the movie as well. If you have 2 hours and like fun, old fashioned type musicals with a lot of camp this is a great one.

The Freak-Face Off is one of my all time favorite movies. Nicholas Cage was soooooo good in that. John T. was good as well, but the way Nick played seeing himself the first time...this man who took his sons life whose face is on his. WOW!! Just WOW. I loved this movie. Another Nick Cage movie I adore is THE ROCK. Who else is with me?

Johnny Depp played Willy Wonka just as good as the recent one but even better IMO!!! He was certainly more funnier than hte last one and more weirder just like Willy is supposed to be. I was also kinda wondering how they chose a serious actor like Depp to play this role but when I saw hte movie it was a great choice!

Last Saturday night, I caught ‘Duck Soup’, a 1933 Marx Brothers movie, on AMC. It was sooo hilarious!! Here is a movie that is 72 years old and yet is still just as funny today. It is a definitely a comedy that transcends time and now I understand how it can be a classic. I am now looking forward to checking out more Marx Brothers films. My brother and I loved watching them when we were kids, but that was too long ago to remember. Harpo is my favorite.

i * finally * watched " the godfather" last night. it's really sad that i've never seen it, it's one of the top movies ever, and i did work in a video store for over a year. well i can never say never again.

that movie was freaking good! i wasn't sure what to expect, but i got into it and it was great.

i can't wait to watch part 2
