Because of the tie breaker situation, it looks like the Monarchs will open up the playoffs on the road against the Phoenix Mercury. I know the standard answer from players is "it does not matter who we play". But from a fan's point of view, there is no question in my mind that I would much rather play Phoenix than Los Angeles. Not that I am afraid of Leslie and her "trolls", but if you watched last night's game against The Houston Comets on NBA TV, you saw how the Sparks like to get down!! The hard fouls, the elbows the cheap shots and the like. This is from today's edition from the LA Times:

Joe Bryant said he "went Philly" in the fray.

The new Spark coach was far from the only one to be involved in an on-court incident after Los Angeles' 55-50 victory over the Houston Comets on Sunday night at Staples Center, and he wasn't the first to exchange harsh words.

The dispute began over the Sparks' accusations of a cheap shot by Houston's Tina Thompson that sent Los Angeles' Laura Macchi to the floor at the end of the game.

By the time it was over, players from both teams had exchanged shoves, fists were raised, Bryant and Houston Coach Van Chancellor exchanged harsh words and reportedly even Spark owner Johnny Buss joined the dispute on the court.

It was not immediately known whether any punches were thrown, but no one was injured on a night when the Sparks were fighting for playoff survival with a victory that kept them one game behind the fourth-place Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA's Western Conference playoff race.

After the game, Macchi stayed on the floor several minutes while several Sparks — most notably Christi Thomas — had to be restrained from going after Thompson.

"[Thompson] took a cheap shot at one of my teammates and I told her it was uncalled for," said Christi Thomas, who added there was some shoves exchanged by the players.

"She said something to me … it was the heat of the moment," Thomas said. "But you take a cheap shot at one of my teammates, and we've got to stick up for one another."

Macchi, whose primary language is Italian, had Spark center Lisa Leslie speak for her.

"She said she went to box Thompson out [after Houston's final shot] and she swept her leg out from under her," Leslie said. "That's what [Macchi] said, because I didn't see it."

Bryant, in his third game as the Spark coach, added: "It was an old-fashioned soccer leg whip. I asked Tina, 'What did you do?' She said, 'Oh, she flopped.' I said 'I know you're a better player than that.' And then Van came up and questioned me talking to his player. Then I went Philly on him. But it's all good.

Now I know that Houston "was supposed to be" the instigator in this incident, but we all know better. How many times have we seen Leslie lay that big 'ole arm smack down on a players head. How many times have we seen Dixon and Mbeka "go straight up gangsta" on an opposing player. And if they still had Milton-Jones....my God, I can not even imagine.

As a Monarch fan, I do not want any part of that nonsense. Because that team is so desperate, when the Monarchs beat them, I am afraid that they would have little left to continue forward on their march to the Finals. I am 100 percent sure that Sacramento can beat LA, but at what cost is what concerns me.

Bring on Phoenix.

At no time would I want to face a Leslie/Holdsclaw tandem in the playoffs. One day their talent will emerge. They are much more talented than their record indicates. I wonder with Henry Bibby gone if they will start getting it together and playing like a team.

If Tina had gone up against ANY of the usual suspects then I might be a little bit more inclined to take the Houston side of this. But by all accounts she somehow did something uncool against Macchi for whatever reason. Or at least that's my impression from all accounts I've read by people who saw what happened. I apparently changed channel too quickly after I thought the outcome had been decided.

I don't care which team the M's face in round one. They should be able to handle either of them if they show up and play defense and try to score every once in a while.

I am rooting for LA for no other reason than I don't want to hear about how Diana Taurasi singlehandly lead the Mercury to the play-offs.

I was actually hoping that Minny could make a late run.
But to no avail. Neither one of these options really pleases me because of the propganda factor.
And Bryant seems to really be making a difference. Or rather the absence of Bibby is making a difference.
Phoenix being in the Play-offs is good for Business because People Want to see the Desert Diva. So bring her on...
But I would rather put the smck down on LA. And hope they don't get to Ghetto on us.

I vote for the absence of Bibby...because it seems like they just all now feel the freedom to do what they want to do, I'm not sure he's actually "coaching" in the true sense of the word right now.

I'm of the mind that to win a championship, you have to be able to beat whoever you meet. However, of 3 regular season games to date, it's Phoenix over Sac 2-1. They do make me nervous. I really want to see the Monarchs handle Phoenix tomorrow.

The Monarchs seem to play LA well, and "know" them better. A part of me would like to see LA in the first round for the simple fact that they're used to them and can take them. That would make for an easier first round, relatively speaking. Yes as potential champions they should be able to take anyone, but if their first round is "easier" they won't be so worked over for the next round. Phoenix is on a bit of a tear right now. I thought Stepanova was supposed to go back to Europe like now.....So if they don't have her, I think we should have an easier time with them. That's not to say it will be a cake walk. Our guards need to find a way to contain Taurasi and DeForge, otherwise it's going to be a short postseason.

In all honesty, I would like to see Whiz rest the starters a bit. Yo's in pain, and Ticha is tired. I know they want to go out on a winning record, but I would hate to see any other medical issues come up.

To me, it is not a matter of who you can beat and who you can not beat. Because in my heart of hearts, I know that the Monarchs can beat both teams. But I have been watching the Sparks in their last 2 or 3 games, and they are playing extremely physical. Almost borderline dirty. The Monarchs don't need that. They have enough problems with injuries as it is. Yolanda is hurt right now, Ticha is hurt. They do not need physical play that can risk an early exit. And I think that LA can and will do that.
