Monarchs Trade Crystal Kelly to Detroit for Kristen Haynie

farewell crystal ... i enjoyed cheering for ya ... good, but not too good, luck in detroit ... ; )

welcome back kristin ... hope you can come home again ... ; )

Uh yeah.....I liked Haynie when she was here, but at the same time I didn't see much improvement during her other stints. She was as inconsistent as the rest of the team. I suppose she was picked because she already knows the white line crap and won't need as much ramp up time.

I truly hope she can come out with some confidence and make a difference. It is late in the season, but if it make for exciting basketball, bring it!!!

Welcome back Haynie!

This confuses me. I know we need a point guard, but does JW have to continue to have revisisionist history?:confused:

Agreed.

Whiz might as well get Olympia Scott, Miao Lijie, Sui Feifei, and Erin Buescher --- oops, I mean Perperoglou --- back while he's at it.

Just because they have some familiarity with the "white line defense" doesn't mean they have gotten better since they last left the team.

She's an absolutely atrocious two-point shooter, and she's rapidly losing confidence in the three pointer. Considering that's all she brings to the table, not sure about this one...

I hope she can regain some confidence and hopefully knock down some 3's. maybe we can make better use of her 3 point shooting than we did last time.

Bring Yo in as coach-Monarchs 2005 revisited!

I am sick of reliving the past too. Wiz is screwing up the team by just bringing in 2005 retreads.

I was hoping Kelley could bring us someone who can put the ball in the hoop. An NBA rule of thumb is that you never ever trade a young proven big for a small player unless you are getting a top-flight small player. Haynie does not fit that bill at all.

The only good thing is that Paris can get more minutes. Wiz should play Paris until she drops for the rest of this lost season. Paris is the only hope I can see for this team. Develop her now, not next May.

Good luck to you Crystal!! Take it easy on us the next time we play DET!

Welcome back Haynie, even though if she finishes the season strong she'll probably just be picked up in the expansion draft...again ;)

On the one hand, I am also sick and tired of the re-treads. Good grief! If the defense is so complicated to learn, don't use it. This season is lost. It would be better to get someone on the roster now who will just get us through the end of the season. Swoopes, for example, would bring some excitement to the team, is a good defender in her own right, and isn't a long term solution, but is someone to revitalize the fans.

On the other hand, this move allows Lawson to get off the bench and into the starting lineup, where she can form a potent offensive squad with Powell and Brunson. She's had to give up her scoring role since she was backing up Ticha, so now that role can fall to Haynie.

I guess I'm neutral on the move. I'm worried it portends that there won't be any roster progress in the off-season, but it should help out for the remainder of this one.

GO MONARCHS!!!!!

come on Folks...

I see the signing as a positive step.

1) We needed to move one of the posts at some point. Crystal served us well, and I wish her the best. But reality is we needed to do something in the post, because chances are we will be positioned to draft a very skilled post player this coming season. If not we are still decent.
2) Kara is not a WNBA Point guard. She was a fine Olympic point guard. Kudos for her performance. But She has been dreadful as a PG this year. And no matter how people feel about Haynie she was never as bad as Kara Lawson has been.

Haynie has been vilified because she was supposed to be the heir to the Ticha throne. She would have had to have been a absolute WORLD BEATER for her to be accepted in that role. And since she hasn’t been a World beater, it means she sucks. Which is totally untrue. Right now she is here to be the back up Point guard, cause our current Back Up sucks.
Can anyone out there name a better PG that we could have acquired before the trade deadline? NO??? Me neither, and it cost us someone who probably wouldn’t have made the ball club next year anyway. Plus Haynie has been a solid back-up for us. Did she struggle in ATL??? Yes. Did she get any minutes in Detroit? No. Nonetheless, we need a back up point, and she needed Playing time. And if she sucks we don’t have to resign her next year. Seems like a good fit to me.

I am pleased that Whiz did something to address the problem. It took 3 years, but he finally made a move. Okay he did the retread thing. And that is a bit tired. But he saw a need and he made a move to address the need. What I Hope is that this is the road to serious evaluation.

Lets be real folks, Team Whiz is treading water til the off-season where they can revamp things. He probably knew that when Jenny got the Hook. Now he can’t come out and say that, especially since he still has 5 weeks left in the season. Boddie should be leaving soon, so I wouldn’t be shocked if we saw Some different players Auditioning for next year. It also sends the message to anyone on the squad that is thinking about dogging it, that the rest of the way; they better bring it or they may not be back. To me that is good after especially that mess of a ball game against LA

Feh. I was willing to give Haynie a clean slate in Atlanta; when she sucked there, on a team where the starting PG job was hers to lose, I washed my hands of her. So, I'm not seeing this as any kind of positive, where Haynie is concerned; the only way to spin this as a positive, in my opinion, is to look at the move as freeing up minutes for Paris.

If we were going to acquire a washed-up former Dream PG, I would have rather had Teasley.

Knee jerk reaction was "oh come on Whiz! Get creative!".

Upon further reflection, I'm thinking that making a move is good since it frees Kara to start at the 2 guard sending a very inconsistent Sho to a backup roll. Also, as many of you have pointed out this hopefully will yield Paris a few more extra minutes. She's proven that she can pack stats in her minutes.

But still can't shake the feeling that Whiz could have got more something more for a young big rather than a player he already gave up on once.

Several have made comments about Whiz giving up on Haynie, etc.--this was not the case. Haynie was lost to an expansion draft (Atlanta), and Whiz could only protect a certain number of players. He had plenty he needed to protect ahead of Haynie. She is a good ball-handler & defender, and she pushes the ball. Biggest plus for me--Kara goes back to the 2 spot:)

Welcome home Kristin!

Well said. I tried vouching for her last year against Slim, but it turns out that he was then and is now 100% correct. This is just a move to get a little end-of-the-season boost of attendance. If Haynie, with no significant improvement in her game, couldn't cut it in Atlanta and in Detroit, she's not going to just waltz in here and all of a sudden "get it".

I only approve of this move because it frees up Paris and leaves us room to integrate a young post into next year's rotation if we land one (I'd rather have a guard).

How in the world would bringing in Haynie boost attendance at all? I can't imagine anyone thinking, "Wow, Haynie's back, now I have to go to a game!" I wasn't impressed with her when she was here and have no reason to change that opinion. I kept waiting for her to improve and I never saw it.

For goodness Sakes...

Good Lawd People...

She is a back Up...

She is not coming in to start, or replace Ticha. She is here to give relief minutes.

And Teasley?? Please, She is slow and doesn't shoot at all. She is Tall tho...
Haynie was never as great as people wanted/expected her to be. But she certainly is not as bad as people are making her out to be.

And while we are talking about people's roles. Why would Kara move back to being a starter? What has she done this year to make you say... Ohh yeah she has played much better than Sholanda? Even when she was on the floor as the 2 with Ticha she didn't totally out play Sho.

IMO Sholanda is doing what she does and has earned the right to keep her starting role. Kara hasn't. Kara has completely underperformed up to this point. Now if she demonstrates that her productivity will increase being a full time 2 then by all means she can start. But this season she hasn't and she should come off the bench it she proves otherwise.

I think that is why I am scratching my head with this move. At 7-18, this team is not going to the playoffs. You probably could have gotten her during the off-season for nothing, and could have traded Kelly for soemthing else.

The Monarchs desperately need an heir-apparent for Ticha. At some point she is not going to be around. The starting backcourt right now is this team's biggest need. And I know that Kelly couldn't fetch a starter, but Kelly plus a player plus a pick in the off-season could have gotten you something better than Haynie.
