Monarchs Select Kim Smith and Scholanda Hoston

KIm Smith is a 4 time player of the year in the Mountain West Conference. She also is a member of the Canadian National Team. Only really saw her play once this year in the NCAA tourney against Maryland, had a horrible first half, but lit it up in the second half. She has nice range and can rebound, don't know if she'll be a 3 or 4 in the league though.

Hoston is a great defender out of LSU. I'm excited that we picked her up. She's quick and long on the defensive end and can also shoot from 3pt range.

I'm kinda warm about Smith, the MWC was actually one of the few conference tournaments I saw quite a few games from. She's pretty steady as players go and the fact that she can rebound helps a lot.

I too am pretty excited about Hoston coming here. Whiz might have done a nice job filling the role that Newton performed so well. Hoston is pretty darn quick.

Well, the Monarchs passed up a chance on Zolman at #13 and #14, which will disappoint Luv13. The San Antonio Silver Stars took Zolman at #16.

Also, the M's took Lamisha Augustine, a forward from San Jose State at #41. I don't know anything about her other than that she's a Fresno native and the obvious Northern Californian connection.

Here's the full draft board selections (barring any post-draft trades):

Strange that no Maryland Terrapin was drafted. Were there no seniors on that championship squad?

The Terps had two seniors, Angel Ross and Charmaine Carr. Neither played significant minutes, Charmaine played a few minutes here and there, but Angel rarely ever played.

Exactly what I was thinking. She is just the kind of player we need to play defense at the 2. Also, wasn't she more of a role player with LSU? Just what we need. Newton knew her role well, and sounds like Hoston can fill the void, left by Chelsea, very well.

Regarding Smith, during the Regionals Stacy Dales mentioned that Kim Smith was the toughest player she had ever played against. She also said you wouldn't know it just to watch her play. They played together on the Canadian National team. Since Dales has played against the US National team, I'd take that as a ringing endorsement.

I think she's got nice speed, too. Coach Whiz said he was looking for another 3 in the draft to back up Nicole. She might work out well.

Hoston is a hustler, defensive specialist with good shooting skills.

Nice choices in my opinion.

Is it May 5 yet?

Sadness...

It's Okay.... SASS in one of my other Favorite teams and she will be playing with Chantelle

I was digging up some info yesterday on the third rounder. I'm kinda rooting for her now. Looking at the Sac Bee's draft coverage (everybody - please be sure to drop the Bee an appreciative note for the big spread they gave the draft in today's paper if you are more than satisfied by it)

Anywho...back to the Bee and Lamisha Augustine....the little blurbs from Whiz that they included for each player indicated that the coaching staff worked Augustine out a couple of times - so he actually had her on his radar screen at some point. (He also compares Kim Smith to Penny Taylor - good gravy, I'm down with that).

But here's a game recap from a SJSU/Rutgers meeting this past December Augustine put up 18pts/9rebs against Rutgers (yes, bodying up against that Rutgers D), and she was money down the stretch from the FT line as SJSU came close to pulling an epic upset.

Also, these stories give some personal backstory on her....
