In the meantime, bringing Wade back on a one-year, $20 million deal puts the Heat about $13 million over the projected tax line, and Miami wants no part of the harsh repeater penalties that would come with paying the tax for a fourth time in five seasons. Mario Chalmers and Chris Andersen are available for nothing, per several league sources, and the Heat have even put out Shabazz Napier feelers with an eye on carving out extra cap room next summer.

Seems like the Birdman is too expensive and likely redundant with Trill on the roster.

Shabazz Napier? Not sure about them, either, but he is a young PG prospect...

HOWEVER, the Kings have non-guaranteed contracts they could trade and a trade exception (right?) to take on one or two of these guys. So would you take on Chalmers or Birdman's contract plus Napier in exchange for McCallum and Moreland? Or what about just taking on Napier's contract for nothing? Not sure if Napier is a contributor or a long term prospect or if he is a better fit than McCallum.

HOWEVER, the Kings have non-guaranteed contracts they could trade and a trade exception (right?) to take on one or two of these guys. So would you take on Chalmers or Birdman's contract plus Napier in exchange for McCallum and Moreland? Or what about just taking on Napier's contract for nothing? Not sure if Napier is a contributor or a long term prospect or if he is a better fit than McCallum.

I don't see any of those three fitting a need for the team. I would be very interested in McRoberts, though.

McRoberts was really good next to Al Jefferson in Charlotte. He thrives as a high-post passer and floor spacer, and would work next to WCS, Koufos, or Cousins. That is the one type of big the team is missing right now. It gives you four full-size bigs with different skillsets plus Moreland for insurance. It also makes it harder for Karl to play smallball. Of any of the available guys in Miami, he is the only one who seems like a decent option as a fourth big.

Not sure we need to trade for another PG with the bunch we have at the minute (Rondo, Collison, Miller, Ray). Only way we would need one is if we decide to trade Collison, or we decide not to bring back Miller and/or move Ray.

Likewise I'm not sure we need another center with Cousins, Koufos and WCS on the roster. Only way we could give Anderson any mins would be if Cousins plays PF and Anderson becomes our third string center.

For me, I'd stay clear of taking on any of these players.

Apparently we had to renounce our trade exceptions as soon as we went under the cap and signed new players. Kind of makes sense that they take up cap space and have to be renounced, so much for the cap wizardry of PDA.

In another year they probably could have bought us a mid-first round pick by a team looking to clear cap space in free agency. I think this year the draft was too deep and most of the teams looking to make a splash already had room to do so while many teams are looking towards next year.

Ironically, the only team besides the Kings that ultimately traded assets for cap space was... Phoenix.

Yep. Forgot about that one, probably because in my eyes Aldridge to San Antonio was a foregone conclusion once it leaked he was out of Portland. I still don't know why everyone else convinced themselves they had a shot which made the Phoenix deal stand out.

I'd take a flier on Napier as a third guard, assuming Ray is out. He can shoot the three ball quite a bit better, can defend well for his size and has good intangibles (from the last time I read about him). However, his struggles inside continued with him to the NBA, and he didn't have a great rookie season. Not a priority, but more of a "why not."

Chalmers is a head case, we already have enough knuckleheads.

At this point, the team needs to round out its roster with more shooting (an above average 3P specialist 2 or 3), a perimeter stopper, and an actual PF (not a SF) who can space the floor a bit for when Karl wants more traditional lineups. Not seeing any of that here.

I agree wholeheartedly with the bolded. I don't know if McRoberts is being shopped around, but he would address one of those issues. However, he will come with a huge injury risk, and with his contract being 3 more years, the Heat may have to part way with assets in order to trade McRoberts to ANY team.

Actaully any of Birdman/McRoberts/Chalmers has his attractions at this point in free agency, but they all have distinct drawbacks too, including flat money.

Been watching Napier at Summer League and plays high level here at this level, shoots well but def only seemed ok. More a shooter than floor leader.
