According to the Charlotte Observer this morning "... the Bobcats appear to be running out of roster spots." They reached terms with Walter Hermann of Argentina that would be their 15th contract slot. The Observer went on to say "Ely, who can play PF or center, could play for the qualifying offer next season to become an unrestricted free agent (he is a restricted FA now). He could also sign an offer sheet with another team or work out a sign-and-trade deal..."

Ely is listed at 6-10 and 261 lb and went to Fresno State. Two years with the Clips and two with Bobcats show average stats and only a 56%-66% FT. In 23.6 min/g last year, had 5 reb, 10 pts, 50% FG and 67% FT. A journeyman "big" at best. But better than Pollard, Wilcox and others out there?

Not better than Wilcox. Has some potential as an athletic scorer, but yet another big, and a big big, who has always rebounded like a complete weenie. Does he get it? The Clippers went through a long period there where for about 5 years the collective IQs of all their picks wouldn't have added up to 100, and Ely was part of that.

In any case, this late in the market there isn't much to pick from, and Ely is at least big and moderately young. Can score inside for you too. Yet another big who wouldn't solve any of our problems, but at least would add a quality big body to the roster.
 
I like Ely(mainly because he went to my college) and he was actually one of the bright spots during the Tark tenure. Actually graduated from school and is a really good kid. Haven't watched him play much since he went to Charlotte but maybe they would take one of our expiring contracts for him???
 
I'd take him if we could get him for the LLE or trading Hart. He has versatility and size, better than the PR and Doleac guy right, that's not saying much. :D
 
Aren't they the only team that is having trouble meeting the salary MINIMUM? Maybe we could get him and couple of draft picks in a sign-n-trade for one of our larger expiring contract...Williamson, Hart, or hopefully Thomas.
 
He's more of a 4 than 5, but can play C sometimes. He's athletic, long, solid on both sides of the floor. I wouldn't mind getting him at all, much better than Pollard or Doleac. Santiago I'm not buying into at all, at the most he'd be a training camp invite, like other FA bigs in the past.

KT to Charlotte? That just doesn't make sense for them or us. Potapenko or Corliss to Charlotte for him? Yes.

Of course that doesn't make any sense for them. Can't use the ending contract idea, because Ely isn't on the books at all so all they have to do is let him walk to get capspace. I would assume they would want something real in return. A kid or a pick or something.
 
Ely's offensive game is intriguing and has especially developed this past year (he was 29-48 from the field in his last 4 games and shot 50.8% from the field for the season) but I still remember from the games I saw of him that his offensive game is still erratic, so the numbers tend to fool. He tries to do too much on offense--taking ill-advised jumpshots, missing some chippies, getting offensive fouls, etc.--his offensive IQ is sorely lacking. Ely got an opportunity in Charlotte and put up decent stats, but so did Jason Hart as well, so something tells me that he'll fall down to earth if he joins another team. Ironic how Ely was known as a shotblocker at college, but barely does anything of the sort in the NBA--his defense and his work ethic/attitude are extremely questionable. He can be a solid bench player if he puts his mind to it, but for now I'm putting him as a 9th man.
