McGrady leaves Rockets over playing time

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Tracy McGrady left the Houston Rockets and returned home Saturday after being told by coach Rick Adelman that despite McGrady's wishes, his playing time would not increase.

In a strange twist to a story that has had its share of weird plot turns, the Rockets said McGrady received the team's permission to fly back to Houston, in part so that be could be home for his the birthday of his young son, Laymen.

But there clearly was an impasse between McGrady and Adelman about what the next step should be in McGrady's comeback from microfracture knee surgery, and the Rockets said the situation would be readdressed Monday after the team returns home from a back-to-back set against New Jersey and Cleveland.

"That's what I'm trying to figure out: Where do we go, and still keeping the rest of the guys moving forward?" Adelman said. "It's kind of a balancing act in trying to figure it all out, and I do not have the magic answer. I wish I did."

McGrady played short stints of 7 or 8 minutes in each of Houston's previous six games, then asked that his workload be increased. Adelman refused, and the situation reached a new juncture after the team's morning shootaround Tuesday.

"I'm a player, man," McGrady told the Houston Chronicle. "I don't make these decisions. I just abide by whatever they bring to me. That's the plan. I'm not going to argue and fight with them -- just run with it. I felt it was time [to increase the routine of playing seven to eight first-half minutes]...

Spoiled, infected with severe case of superstaritis - even though he's now a shell of his former self on the court. If McGrady was really sent home even in part to celebrate his young sons birthday, that's just pathetic. On his $20+ million annual salary (last year of contract) he could have chartered a jet to bring kid and family to him to blow out the candles. I bet such apparent special treatment will not sit well with a lot of his overachieving Houston teammates.

I look at clutchfans.net from time to time and most Rockets fans are outraged over oft injured McGrady and now the attitude issue is pushing them to demand action. A lot of them want the Rockets just waive him if a deal can't be made soon.

If the Rockets don't want him on the court, and their fans hate him, who the hell has been stuffing the ballot box for him to start in the All-Star game?

China. Is it that hard to realize that all the Chinese people that are voting for Yao are also voting for Tmac as well? ;)

wasnt last year the year when yi almost made it to the allstar cause of the chinese votes...

they need to remove players who dont PRODUCE in those ballots.. its ironic that its both fair and unfair how votes are the key to getting to the allstar...

you either get them by being famous or producing ridiculous numbers at the expense or good of the team

i bet even if kobe at his twilight years produce 12ppg and stuff he'd still be in that allstar for namesake alone..

btw im upset reke's name isnt there

Chinese people or not, the legitimacy of all-star game is completely ruined as soon as regular fans have the final say on whos in and who start in it.

yes exactly... players should be the one to vote in.... and coaches cause THEY know who are worthy of it...

i mean us fans should get our two cents and opinion on the matter but when the results of such votings is that a underperforming, downward spiral tmac is leading the votes.. thats where the league should put it's foot down.

oh well....

i never liked tmac... where he goes im just hopeful he doesnt end up here
