McCants to blast off with the Houston Rockets

It's a non-guaranteed contract, but my guess is that he'll stick. T-Mac is enough of a question mark that I would want insurance for his slot. If he were not playing, the Rockets would likely have Battier and Ariza starting on the wing with only the aging Brent Barry and 2nd round rookies Jermaine Taylor and Chase Budinger as backups - none of which are particularly palatable, especially if you consider you've got maybe 30 minutes a game to spread among them. McCants could get 15-20 a night consistently, just as long as T-Mac is hurt...and even if T-Mac starts the season healthy, it's really only a matter of time.

McCants's case is a strange study in free agency--on one hand he's 24 and is only one year removed from averaging 15 points per game, but on the flip side he's had attitude problems and is perceived as a sole gunner offensively. He's not that one-dimensional either--his offensive game is fairly layered and he does have defensive intensity at times. So for him to be available this far into free agency says something about the state of the market--is it tiring of undersized gunners or scorers? Or is it something about McCants' attitude? Or is it McCants' agent overestimating his worth and balking at deals? I can see why we have no use for him, but I think Houston (who desperately needs scoring) may have found an adequate replacement for Von Wafer. Attitude included.

i liked mccants.... i dont care if he was a chucker or not he had that defensive energy that only cisco and maybe noc have on this team.
good luck in houston.

I would think this would work -- the Rockets are in desperate need of offense now, and McCants showed surprising willingness to bang on defense (which they love, despite being coached by that infamous no defense coaching Adelman). And if they put up with Von bleeping Wafer last year as a chucker, and Ron bleeping Artest as resident nutjob, its hard to see McCants' gunning or attitude questions being too much for Rick to handle.

All in all, Rick should be in for a pretty sanguine year anyway. He's lost pretty much all headaches of last season -Artest, Von Wafer, the expectations- and can now run an extremely coachable team without any kind of pressure. I still fully expect them to make the playoffs and thus win Rick a coach of the year in the process. I like that team a lot.

Every time Von Wafer's name comes up, I think of Spike last summer saying that he sounds like an evil German cookie. :D

I always thought Von "Nilla" Wafer was the best NBA nickname since Lee "Press-On" Nailon.

Well in German, Von means with title. But cookie is Platzhen. But what the hell, wafer is close enough..

Well, you could sorta derive Waffel from it, which in German is pretty much the same as in English. The correct translation for cookie would be Keks, Plätzchen or Gebäck...if you really wanted to know ;)
