Matt Barnes: Swingman hopes career path leads back home

Why would Matt be a Restricted FA? He signed a one year deal with the Kings. Am I missing something? To my knowledge he is free as a bird.

didn't he win a couple games for us with some key plays at the end of the game.

Yes he did. Bottom line is that Matt is an athletic, energetic defender, that can rebound very well. He provides something we sorely missed while he was gone.

Hmmm. If you look on Brickie's OFFICIAL free agent list, it shows Matt as restricted...maybe it's just a clever ploy on the part of the Sixers to keep us from getting him back.

;)

Yes Barnes is restrictd but, so is Dalembert, Korver, Rodgers, and Willie Green. I don't think Philly will waist much time trying to match any offer Barnes gets especially if he is the 13th man that just made the numbers work for Webber. Besides i bet Philly spends most of its time shopping Webber around.

HMM, HOW did he end up restricted? We only gave him a one year deal, didn't we?

WORD! I would love to see him back too! I propose we start a "Bring Back Matt!" campaign....

Sign me up!! I would love to see Matt back in a Kings' jersey. He has heart, talent, shows passion for the game and is NOT a problem child. We can only hope!!:D

Where is our contract killer? WE NEED A PROFESSIONAL ON THIS!!!

I just checked realGM. It lists Matt Barnes as a restricted free agent. Off to the side is a tip:

If a player's type reads Restricted it means that the player meets the requirements to be a restricted free agent only if the team presents a qualifying offer in the appropraite amount to the player at the conclusion of the player's current contract. If the qualifying offer is not tendered to the player, the player will be an unrestricted free agent.

I'm reading that to mean that Matt will be considered a restricted free agent IF the Sixers present him with a qualifying offer at the end of his current contract, which was through June 2005. So, if the Sixers don't make him an offer he's unrestricted.

I am so confused. I've thought all along it worked the other way. That a restricted free agent could accept offers from other teams but his current team had the right to match any offer and keep him.

This will make sixer's GM very very busy.

You've got it right. If a player is a restricted free agent, their team gets a chance to match any offers given to that player by other teams. However, even if a player is eligible to be a restricted free agent, their team first has to make them a qualifying offer. Basically, the team in question makes an offer to the player at the end of their contract. If they accept it, they are re-signed. If they decline it they become a restricted free agent and their team still has the right of refusal which means they can match any offers to that player. If the team has no interest in signing the player, they won't make a qualifying offer and they will forfeit their restricted free agent privelages. The player will become an unrestricted free agent.

I don't understand how Philadelphia would get 'restricted free agent status' with Barnes since he's only been there for a few months and didn't even play for them. I guess maybe it was written into the contract with the Kings and since Philly took over that contract, they get the option of making a qualifying offer to maintain restricted status. Interesting. I bet Philly doesn't make the qualifying offer anyway. They put him on the DL while they had him, so why would they want him back?

Matt will be working out in Sacramento over the summer. I'm sure Petrie and everyone else with the Kings is aware he's available and would like to come back and play for the Kings. I wouldn't be surprised to see him playing for us next year if he fits into Petrie's plan for the team. It's possible there just won't be a need at SF. I think Barnes would be a solid backup for Peja, but I wouldn't make bringing him back a priority. After all the other deals are done, if he still has a place here, then definately.

Personally, I'm confused about the restricted free agent thing. If it takes two years to get the "early bird rights" that allows a team to match up to the mid-level, what are the restrictions on a one year player?

Never mind, the following was taken from Larry Coon's CBA FAQ:

"In order to make their free agent a restricted free agent, a team must submit a qualifying offer to the player by June 30. The amount of the qualifying offer for players on rookie "scale" contracts is based on the player's draft position (see question number 38 ). The qualifying offer for all other players must be for 125% of the player's previous salary, or the player's minimum salary (see question number 9 ) plus $150,000, whichever is greater. The qualifying offer must be for one season. The team automatically gets an exception in the amount necessary to make this qualifying offer if they are over the salary cap."

That would seem to make it a nice piece of coin for a player that they didn't appear to want.

Exactly what I was thinking, too. Hope he makes it back here.

Definitely liked matt when he was here also, I really hope the kings can bring him back to help us coming off the bench again.

Even if he sat at the end of the bench (which I would hate to see) who wouldn't rather have Matt there than Eric Daniels?

Philly won't be interested in Matt. Dalembert is gonna command serious money that Philly will match. I doubt Philly will be able to even keep Korver. We would be able to get Barnes, unless another team offers Matt considerably more (doubt it). We should go for Matt, even throw in an offer to Dalembert;) (Gonna be one of the best big men in the league in 2-3 years. You heard it here)

How can we throw an offer for Dalembert when all we can offer is MLE and it would take more than that for Dalembert to even consider.
