Kings Owner Wants Apology From Kenyon Martin

Kings co-owner Joe Maloof, upset that Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin knocked center Spencer Hawes to the floor on a fast break attempt, has asked for an apology.

Hawes, who was pushed to the floor by Martin, converted a pair of free throws before being escorted to the locker room with an injured knee.

"That was thuggery," said Maloof, "and you can quote me on that. Kenyon Martin wasn't trying to block the shot. He went right at Spencer when he was running full speed and at the (height) of his jump, when he was most vulnerable.

"Completely unnecessary. The Nuggets might not want to hear this, but there was no excuse for that, and he (Martin) needs to apologize to Spencer and our organization. That just wasn't right."

An MRI has since revealed no serious damage in Hawes' knee, which has been diagnosed as strained.

This season is becoming more and more unpleasant. It's almost over though and I'm excited to see the playoffs. And I hope we get back in there sometime soon.

That's just silliness and doesn't do much for our image as the ultimate softies. Ailene long has had that "in" with the Maloof brothers but that doesn't mean everytime she calls they should give her that quote.

I think its fine. I just wish more of our players would have done or said something to him during the game. We are just not respected around the league as a team or organization right now.

Once my mom went to someone else's house to complain about my treatment at school. The next day, the bully gave me a flower...

...then he stuffed me into a locker after giving me a swirlie. The moral of the story? Fight your own battles.

(not that this happened to me.)

Kenyon Martin, an NBA thug-of-thugs, the original Kmart, the antithesis of our Kmart will now be expected bow down to offended Joe Maloof, the Kings organization and Spencer Hawes. I rather doubt it.

The rest of the team owes Spencer an apology, someone should of got in that thug's face and told him watch out or he's hitting the floor next...maybe that's just me.

The league office frowns (rather assertively) on that kind of thing.

This would be how those things are normally handled.

But again, THIS WAS NOT A THUGGING. Watch the damn clip in that highlight package. It was barely more than a glorified touch foul, and we come across as nothing but a bunch of wimps for whining so vociferously about it.

one of the weakest flagrants in recent memory. There was no push, no shove, no extension, no follow through, no body momentum.

I dont like how refs call a lot of flagrants based on how players land. A flagrant isnt just a play not on the ball. if that wer ethe case, wrapping someone up would be a flagrant. grabbing a jersey would be a flagrant.

That foul wasnt a flagrant.

C-Webb and Doug would have got in Kenyon's face if they were still playing...but to tell you the truth, it wasnt as bad of a foul as it's being made out to be, but I guess the foul just rubs more salt into an already painful season altogether and Joe Maloof was letting out a little frustration.

I'm glad Joe Maloof said something. I hope he does bring up the vulnerability issue in the owner's meeting. This time might not have been as bad as he thought, but it could have been.

Just because there was no big motion and no follow through doesn't mean it wasn't a flagrant... a well-timed push or pull on a player flying through the air is far more dangerous than taking a good whack at someone who's standing.

Don't want a flagrant? Then at least pretend like you're going for the ball.

Whining for an apology is silly, though... I'd be pretty ticked at Joe for those comments if I were Spencer.

im sure the maloofs are pretty concerned and aware of their centers promising career that they went out and demanded an apology from kenyon

but what im afraid is this might hurt spencers pride in a way that management has to "fight" his battles?

i know spencer has that meanstreak to him and i really dont want the maloofs trying to sissy him up with this move

its ok to be protective of your players but let them grow...

as they said that kenyon is being a thug?

would you expect an apology from a thug?

no.. kenyon has and always will be a thug your just wasting your time asking him to say sorry

Its rigth at the front of the game highlights above -- it looks like even more of a nothing on the hihglights than I thought it did on the game. Spence jsut came down a little wrong.

Thanks Brick for the clip...I rewound that clip several times and it really didn’t show anything. It did look like a basic touch foul, but maybe it was worse if it were an up close shot. Either way, I’m really glad that Spencer is ok and not too badly hurt.

Heh, when I first saw "Kings owner wants apology from Martin", I thought it referred to Kevin. That seemed bizarre.

i cant see kevin martin doing anything bad off court for him to make an apology... its like hes got the face that cant do anything wrong lol

I guess Martin already apologized to him...

Kenyon Martin Apologized Before Maloof's Outcry

In response to Kenyon Martin's flagrant foul Monday night, Kings co-owner Joe Maloof described Martin's actions as "thuggery" to The Sacramento Bee on Wednesday and demanded that Martin apologize. But Martin had already apologized to Spencer Hawes personally after the Nuggets- Kings game.

"I was in my car and he was going to the bus," Martin said after Wednesday's shootaround. "I pulled right up to him, shook his hand and told him it wasn't anything dirty and I didn't mean to hurt him — it was just a basketball play. . . .

"I hit him on the arm first and foremost. It was a hard foul. It was just the nature of how he fell was what they called. I didn't get suspended or anything. It wasn't like I meant to hurt him. It wasn't malicious. If I meant to do it, I wouldn't have apologized."
