Maloof, Anaheim courting proceeds

"(George) Maloof told me, as he would later tell the dinner crowd of 300-plus, "We're trying to do our best to keep our team in Sacramento right now. But who knows what is going to happen?" He admitted it is "kind of awkward" to be continuing the courtship with Anaheim while still making a good-faith effort to stay in Sacto. What makes me think he has his heart in Anaheim? The way he talks about the city; that he came to the event and didn't just write a check."

Maloof: Don't read into Anaheim visit

Youngman column: Sacramento Kings co-owner says city holds ‘special place in my heart’

"Is he concerned that people in Sacramento will draw their own conclusions about why he showed up in Anaheim?

"No, because we're trying (to make it work) in Sacramento," he said. "That's where we want to be. We wouldn't have stayed there (otherwise). This isn't a fake thing. Our intentions are good, and we're going to try. That's what we told the league and that's what we told the City of Sacramento. We're going to give it our best shot."

Hope there's no truth to "the arena task force had been counting on using some state redevelopment money that was recently eliminated in Gov. Jerry Brown's new budget".

I wouldn't even think about this unless it was reported in our local papers since Youngman has an obvious agenda. He's a columnist and can present his opinion, versus just fact. All that really matters is what the city comes up with in September on how to fund this, since they are the ones who truly know what they are working with. Build the arena and nothing George Maloof or the Anaheim people say matters.

This.

I just wanted to share with everyone what's being reported down south.

This is so sad for Anaheim. They're like the hopeful mistress..."I know he's saying he's trying to work it out with his wife in public, but he's telling me he's going to leave her and come to be with me."

Well, guess what, honey? He's a dog, and you know it. If that's what you want, fine, but don't be surprised when he drops you for somebody else. As for us? We're just trying to win the custody battle.

That's only for future money allocated. Money that has been allocated, ie the railyards, still gets it. This will also be heading to court as cities sue to keep it.

a) this writer has been a major partisan from the beginning, and still has egg on his face from saying it was a done deal. Not a trustworthy source.

b) as mentioend before, George Maloof is not Sacramento's friend.

He also touts a Sept 8th funding deadline when that is really just the date for a key financing report to come in, iirc. Hack.

I haven't been following this situation over the last 6 weeks or so. After all, it is summer. Still, I was very surprised to open my OC Register down here and see two articles about this in two different sections of the paper. I read the articles and didn't really learn anything from it. Are we really surprised that the Maloofs are still interested in moving to OC? I'm not. Are you? The ball is in Sacramento's court. This is clearly a case of hate your owner all day long, but find a way to get it done to keep the team. The question is whether it is worth it or whether the price is too high. And once again, I get little sense that anyone here (south OC) even cares. I wear my Anaheim Ducks T-shirt and Stanley Cup champs hat around the area, and I'm the only one. lol

If it is sad for anyone down here, it is sad for some of the local pols and businesses in Anaheim proper. I don't know of anyone in this county who gives two diddly poos about this.

Oh man, you wear Ducks Stanley Cup gear over Saint Super Bowl gear? Say it ain't so.

Actually there are two lawsuits. The RDA's are suing to keep obligations that have been made sine 01/01/11. Good chance they win this one. The new law does not affect any obligations made before 01/01/11.

They are also suing saying the legislature can't do this. They have a good chance of losing that one. The legislature passed the law creating the RDA's, so they can most likely pass a law undoing their own previous action.

However, the law passed does not necessarily terminate all RDA's. To survive they have to make a payment from RDA funds this year and next year to the State. I forget what percentage. Some RDA's have the financial capacity to make those payments and may opt to do just that. By the way, payments are to come from the 80% of RDA funds for economic development and not from the 20% RDA funds for affordable housing.

If the Sacramento (city/county) RDA makes the payments, they continue forward with less funds than expected for at least the next two years. The rail yards is the single most important economic development area for Sacramento.

Wait....who's a Saints fan? Thought I was the only one in CA

I was referring to "twosomeca" but he needs to be careful about revealing his background on the net so out of respect for him, we'll keep it at that.

That being said, I see a shift in New Orleans' thinking as far as the Hornets are concerned. They seem to think that the NBA's presence has made them look bad in that the media and public are always saying they aren't big or wealthy enough to support 2 teams and that the Hornets leaving would actually be a good thing as a result.

Even their grandest fan of them all, meaning "Harvey", has said that the NFL is his top sport with the NHL and MLB being 2a and 2b and that the NBA would barely register on his radar, if at all, if not for the Hornets.

Or there's another post where he says that the NBA should "contract 30 teams". With the league now owning the team and most likely having some people checking in on their top fan boards, it can't be a good thing when your "best fan" says things like that.

That's true for most metropolitan areas and is the case for all sports that aren't the NFL. Ask any Joe on the street and they won't care or have enough of a take about the possibility of an NBA, NHL or MLB team possibly coming to town but at the end of the day, the stadium or arena will have good attendance because you only need a minority of people to sell out the joint. I'm just hoping that the team that fills Honda Center winds up being the Clips and not the Kings.

And let's be honest, what are the odds of republicans on a golf course giving 2 "diddly poos" about the NBA coming to town? That holds true anywhere in the country.

Ted Gaines is part of the group of legislators trying to keep the team here. So just leave your political drivel out.

Whatever. I'm sorry if I ruffled any political feathers. Long story short is that I was trying to make a point without turning it into a social commentary as I know that would get the poster I was replying to in a bit of a funk.

But at the end of the day, I know the south OC golfer mindset, regardless of political affiliation, as well as the suburban Sacramento types that "twosomeca" brought up before and they don't necessarily represent the overall mindset of the community in regards to the future of the NBA.
