My initial impressions of Doncic for whatever it’s worth (probably not much, my opinion that is).
I thought his court vision, awareness, passing, and ball handling skills were as advertised, very good. I thought his teammates may have even let him down a little bit by their own lack of awareness.
His speed from one end of the court to the other was surprisingly better than I expected.
Defensively, while he wasn’t super quick (again as advertised), I thought he showed good fundamentals, moved his feet well and showed some quick hands a couple of times. His length can’t help but add to his defensive presence. A really quick 2 or 3 can probably blow by him at times, but I think he is smart enough to adjust and he seems to have a good feel for team defense which will help cover for that.
His demeanor was impressive, especially for a 19-year old. He was calm and under control and seemed to control the offense quite well the whole game. I thought he played unselfishly, maybe a little too unselfish at times.
He did not shoot well in this game, 4 of 12 over all I believe, but was 2 of 5 from 3. I did not see anything broken about his shot and that step back 3 was quite impressive. He missed 3 shots right under the basket in a matter of a few seconds while battling for rebounds and that hurt his overall percentage a bit, too.
The thing that surprised me the most, however, is his size. I had not seen him play other than some video clips and was really only familiar with him from a few internet articles. He has a really nice frame on him, for a 19-year old and especially if he is really 6’8” and I believe he is close to that, at least 6’7. I think he has a lot of room on that frame to really bulk up and fill out without slowing him down. This could be important if he is drafted to play the 3. He looked a little soft, but again he is only 19 years old. A couple of off seasons in the weight room and he could really muscle up. I think he can be really special, not Lebron James special, but special.
Right now, I am all in on Doncic. I have seen Ayton play a little bit, and while a really nice player, I was not sold on him. I think Doncic is the future of the NBA, the kind of player that doesn’t have to dominate the game, but can make his teammates better. The position-less player, the kind that can play 1-4, and play each position well. I really believe he can. I believe he will be in the upper tier of this kind of player.
I think Ayton is the past, the ball dominant big who is the whole focus of the offense. I hope the Suns don’t feel this way and take Ayton and the Kings take Doncic. If the Suns take Doncic and the Kings get Ayton, they will still have a very nice player, but I think Doncic would be better for their future and the rebuild. I just think he is the kind of player that will blend well with the Kings core and help make them better and that the core will work well with him and make him better.
Just my opinion, not trying to be provocative in any way and certainly not dissing on Ayton, he is a very good player.
