Luka Doncic (pre and post-draft discussion thread)

Doncic appears to have plenty of talent. My concern is that the Kings already have willing passers that are assist men in Fox and Bogdan. At some point the team needs scorers. Buddy is ball dominant so he plays with the second team. It is possible to make a case that the Kings need the best available big man, not the best available player.

There’s no such thing as having to many pass fist players who play team ball. I’d take a 15-5 guy over a 20ppg guy who holds the ball

My initial impressions of Doncic for whatever it’s worth (probably not much, my opinion that is).

I thought his court vision, awareness, passing, and ball handling skills were as advertised, very good. I thought his teammates may have even let him down a little bit by their own lack of awareness.

His speed from one end of the court to the other was surprisingly better than I expected.

Defensively, while he wasn’t super quick (again as advertised), I thought he showed good fundamentals, moved his feet well and showed some quick hands a couple of times. His length can’t help but add to his defensive presence. A really quick 2 or 3 can probably blow by him at times, but I think he is smart enough to adjust and he seems to have a good feel for team defense which will help cover for that.

His demeanor was impressive, especially for a 19-year old. He was calm and under control and seemed to control the offense quite well the whole game. I thought he played unselfishly, maybe a little too unselfish at times.

He did not shoot well in this game, 4 of 12 over all I believe, but was 2 of 5 from 3. I did not see anything broken about his shot and that step back 3 was quite impressive. He missed 3 shots right under the basket in a matter of a few seconds while battling for rebounds and that hurt his overall percentage a bit, too.

The thing that surprised me the most, however, is his size. I had not seen him play other than some video clips and was really only familiar with him from a few internet articles. He has a really nice frame on him, for a 19-year old and especially if he is really 6’8” and I believe he is close to that, at least 6’7. I think he has a lot of room on that frame to really bulk up and fill out without slowing him down. This could be important if he is drafted to play the 3. He looked a little soft, but again he is only 19 years old. A couple of off seasons in the weight room and he could really muscle up. I think he can be really special, not Lebron James special, but special.

Right now, I am all in on Doncic. I have seen Ayton play a little bit, and while a really nice player, I was not sold on him. I think Doncic is the future of the NBA, the kind of player that doesn’t have to dominate the game, but can make his teammates better. The position-less player, the kind that can play 1-4, and play each position well. I really believe he can. I believe he will be in the upper tier of this kind of player.

I think Ayton is the past, the ball dominant big who is the whole focus of the offense. I hope the Suns don’t feel this way and take Ayton and the Kings take Doncic. If the Suns take Doncic and the Kings get Ayton, they will still have a very nice player, but I think Doncic would be better for their future and the rebuild. I just think he is the kind of player that will blend well with the Kings core and help make them better and that the core will work well with him and make him better.

Just my opinion, not trying to be provocative in any way and certainly not dissing on Ayton, he is a very good player.

So why are we talking about him so much. He is a guy that can get 5 ast and shoot 30% from 3 with questionable defense. Uhm I will pass. Guy looks like a less talented bogdan.

18 pts, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 4-12 shooting (2-6 from 3), 6-8 FT and 3 turnovers
If the kings do draft him, then they need to keep his minutes slightly limited his first season. The guy's been playing pro ball non stop for years. His body isn't fully grown and he could easily injure himself in the NBA if he ain't careful.

Five assists in Euroleague are not the same as five NBA assists. Shorter games, much stricter rules on what constitutes an assist etc. He's a playmaker. He could put up 10 apg in the NBA with a James Harden like role.

I'm still not sold on him as the #2 pick because of his lack of high end athleticism but I think a reasonable floor would be a rich man's Bogie

Comical,
Ayton lost to ****ing Buffalo and there coach’s game plan was to attack him

Bagley couldn’t win a championship with a stacked team and they had to play zone cause of defensive issues

Porter jr is Harrison Barnes

This is where I see moving Buddy into the starting line up to be the Alpha Scorer, if we get Doncic at SF.

I would move Bogdan to be our super Sixth-man, who could play 1-3 off the bench.

With PG Fox and SF Doncic handling ball handling duties, that opens SG Buddy up to be our gunner and Alpha scorer! ;)

That is how I see it too. Buddy played like a legit starter the last 20 games of the season. But Buddy and Fox still need to develop some chemistry.

I tried to translate the ACB.com web page , and this is what I got
not quite the same as the HoopsHype quote above but close to it

Luka Doncic, Real Madrid's Slovenian base, congratulated himself on the classification of the team for the final of the Euroleague and did not hesitate to affirm EFE's question that "saying goodbye to the Décima would be very special" .

Doncic, who is presented to the draft of the NBA this year had not yet made explicit his march to the US competition, he did at the end of his statements in the mixed zone.

"Yes, Fire me with the Tenth would be very special," said Doncic.

The spanish web page says:

Luka Doncic, base esloveno del Real Madrid, se felicitó por la clasificación del equipo para la final de la Euroliga y no dudó en afirmar a pregunta de EFE que "despedirme con la Décima sería muy especial".

Doncic, que se presenta al 'draft' de la NBA de este año todavía no había explicitado su marcha a la competición estadounidense, lo hizo al final de sus declaraciones en la zona mixta.

"Sí, Despedirme con la Décima sería muy especial", dijo Doncic.

anyone out there translate it any clearer?

I want Doncic but this is comically unfair to Ayton. The pack-line defense has now proven itself a bust in the NCAAs and even with whatever defensive woes Ayton may have individually the core blame for that failing mainly lies on Cartwright, Trier and Ristic.

That’s true but I’m putting a lot of blame on Ayton too when the opposing coach goes on record to say they game planned to attack him

They won because they shot 50% from beyond the arc (15/30) while Arizona was something like 11.1% (2-18).

That is why this "defense" that lets teams shoot the 3 at will needs to die.

Bogdan had 5 years on him though while having 2 total assists and 11 boards, Doncic is already at 7-2 ok those. And how was Doncic only credited for 2 assists I could’ve sworn he was at 6-7 but I’m used to the nba style assists
Oh yeah, Doncic is definitely way ahead of Bogdan development wise and is a superior player. Bogdan at 19 was... raw. was just saying Bogdan had a characterisically efficient game. yeah they count assists differently but that applies to Bogdans total as well.

A lot of us are interested in him. Hence we're talking about him. Remember, you're not required to post in every thread ... or even read it. When the title of a thread is Luka Doncic it's kind of a dead giveaway what the topic is gonna be. ;)

Ok here is my gripe. He is touted as this great playmaker and passing abilities are out of this world. Yet his ast are that of and average pg I college. Then I see the 3pt % from closer than NBA and its that of an average college player. His defensive skills are that of an average college player. His athleticism is that of a below average college player. Then I get the “professional basketball”. I watch it and it reminds me of an average March tournament. Jimmer is all star overseas. If doncic puts up those numbers in college he doesn’t even sniff the lottery

That’s the part you took? Look I’ve been Kings fan through a lot of crap I don’t want to see another bust especially at #2. This kid will be average player at best

Andres nocioni has more ppg and more rebounds and better % in euro league then came to nba. The 14pts and 4ast doncic got per game will prob be his best season in the NBA.
