So far, Podziemski is folowing the same career path as Jalen William, who he actually replaced in the lineup when Williams entered the draft. Not quite that simple though. Brandin spent his Freshman year at Illinios, where he got very little playing time. So when Jalen Williams entered the draft, he entered the transfer portal and switched to Santa Clara. At this point, he's starting to have the same effect on the draft boards that Williams did last year and I'm doing my best to make myself move him into the first round.
First, he's a lights out shooter from the perimeter. You're surprised when he misses. If I had a compaint it would be that he needs to take more of them. However, he already takes just tick under 6 game. Too often he'll pass up the open three and drive into the lane for pull up, a floater, or a cutting teammate. As a cutter he's a good finisher, but struggles a bit when he's leading the break. He's not skinny at 200 lb's, but he'd benefit from getting stronger.
He's an unselfish player, noted by his 3.4 assists a game. On a team with better scorers around him, he could easily average 5 or 6. For lack of a better word, I'd call him a safe player. By that I mean. he doesn't turn the ball over, he doesn't try passes that are risky, and he seldom takes a bad shot. For his size, he's a terrific rebounder, and does it all with hustle, and he seems to know where the ball is going to bounce. He always seems to be where ever the ball is. He has good handles and can get just about anywhere he wants on the floor. More than anything, he's a smart player with a terrific feel for the game. He seems to see the play before it happens.
This is particularly beneficial for him on the defensive side of the ball. While Brandin isn't a bad athlete, he's certainly not an elite athlete either. But he's smart and particularly so in team defense. He reads the passing lanes and gets his share of steals. At one point he was averaging two a game. He's always where he's supposed to be on the floor. And while he struggles a bit on the ball against a quick PG, he never quites on the play, and still contests it. So I wouldn't call him a liability on defense. Podziemski has a little dog in him and plays hard all the time.
On the offensive side of the ball, he's bothered by closeouts at times. Or when he's guarded by tall athletic wing, he'll usually give up the ball, rather than force it, although I think he has the tools to challenge and get his shot. But he's a very efficient player, who also gets to the line a lot. I think by the time the draft rolls around, he'll be solidly in the first rd somewhere between 20 and 25. I don't know if he'll ever be a starter, but I can see him as contributer off the bench playing somewhere between 18 and 25 minutes a game. If you can get a solid rotational player drafting at 25, you've done well. If he becomes a starter, then that's a bonus.
