Let's just say for the sake of............

OK, I know we talk about this all the time, but this struck me as interesting....

Let's just say Webber really did say he wanted a trade (which I think he does although he denied saying it)....

OK if you haven't clicked the back button than read on.....

You guys think with our current roster of players that Webber would make a difference if he were back on our team? Let's just say Philly told us that they would dump him on us for expiring contracts, and a draft pick. Webber is unhappy as you can see by his stats. He is still a 18-9 up to a 21-10 guy imo. He could fill a need for us at the PF position, plus the guy does play with passion.

But how much better would he make us? I don't think it would be enough to get us much further than 50 win seasons, and a second round exit unless we added another big guy to pick up the defensive slack.

Since the Webber trade both us and Philly are worse. The trade did nothing for either team. Hell, if it was up to me I would give them back their players, and call it a day. We didnt do anything with these players, and KT is such a passionless player. It's almost like watching a zombie.

I don't think Webber would allow himself to come back to Sac. After the way the managment treated him, (traded him for a bunch of spare parts,) I would hope his pride would prevent it.

There are other problems though. First of all, his defense isn't any better that of Kenny or Reef. His lateral movement is never going to be what it was, and we don't need another big who can't defend. Second, he needs alot of shots to get his points, and we have better options. Artest (usually), Kevin, Bibby, Reef, and Brad are probably all better offensive options for us at this point, and I don't think Webber would like a reduced role here any better than he would in Philly.

The only real plus here for us would be his rebounding and expiring contract, but I don't see it happening.

I see it as a positive if he came back. He sure as hell is better than Kenny Thomas offensively, and would provide quite a spark on the court and in the stands.

But... I don't see it happening because of his contract.

The guy can still play, but his defense sucks.

I'd take him back if the deal made sense. He and Petrie would be able to mend fences, IMHO.

It would not lead to any titles.

On the other hand we would gain in size, rebounding, and maybe for us most critically, passing (in case people have forgot). We have often looked like a team rather badly in need of a veteran leader to take control of the ball and settle things, we also of course desperately need to reestablish a passing mentality and to get some easier shots for somebody other than Kevin.

In any case -- the real deal would be the contract of course. That would be the point. And so it would be better not to use the enders, but rather clear guys with long term deals so that Webb would not only stablize us now, but also be a built in rebuilding plan next year as the books were suddenly cleared. $10 mil in enders this year. $20mil more in Webb's deal next year. That's half the payroll slashed in two years. Not bad for a blast to the past.

And all of that said -- not happening. There were obvious forces at work in Webb's initial ouster -- he was traded for comparative garbage. And so what, now a couple of years later those forces (likely Maloofs, but even moreso if it was Petrie) are going to reverse course and say mea culpa? And Webb is going to accept that? Let's just say doubtful.

This is totally why it would not happen even if it would be a move that would help the Kings. Even if Webb would accept it (doubtful), I don't see the mea culpa coming from either the Maloofs or from Petrie.

Pit of Green Stuff

GP, don't do this for two simple words "Terrible Contract". Webber would eat up about 1/3 of the salary cap with himself alone and with only one leg of productivity. I know we need a big, but he's no $20 million per year steal anymore. I thought that was why management was willing to tote hime off for midlevel players in the first place. His salary just keeps inflating for another two years, digging his team deeper into salary cap hell.

You're a little confused there -- his deal is up after next year. In fact the contract would be the very reason TO do it -- $20mil of insto capspace after next season.

In the summer of 2001, Chris Webber and Doug Christie each signed 7 year deals (going through the 2007-2008 season) during the whole billboard thing with the Maloof offering to mow Chris's lawn if he resigned. Doug got bought out by the Magic with the new "Allen Houston" rule. Chris signed a 127+ million dollar deal, leaving the last two years as player options. Why would he opt out of 20+ million dollar contracts the next two years (this year and next year), as he knows he isn't worth anything near that for the rest of his career? I know he's unhappy in philly, but he isn't going to throw away 45 million just to go elsewere.

Exactly! If we were to trade for C-Webb, it would be to get under the salary cap to try and land a big time free agent in '08.

What happened to doing things for the betterment of the team?

It could be a situation where management thought it was best thing to do at the time (and I don't believe it was). However now it's a different team in a completely different situation. We have an extremely weak front court and with Webber's contract about to expire I think it would benefit the Kings in the short and long term.

I'm not so sure Webb would have too much of an issue coming back to Sactown. I don't believe he harbors any resentment towards the Maloofs or Petrie or else he would have let it be known at the time. I think he wants to play on a good team; he'd much prefer to play with Bibby than AI; he would have that warrior that he's always wanted in Artest, a young stud in Martin; and more importantly have more of a significant role, which he would get on the Kings. Plus he already has a house in Sac and is active within the community. I see it as a win-win situation. And if it's a question of accountability versus betterment of the team; the Maloofs should rethink ownership of the Kings. People make mistakes all the time.
