To Mr. George Maloof:

There is an old saying: “There are lies, damned lies, and statistics”. The commentary by your arena consultant, Mr. Christopher Thornberg of the Los Angeles firm Beacon Economics, published in today’s Sacramento Bee, makes good use of the first two elements without bothering with the third.

Mr. Thornberg’s arguments hinge on the premise that neither you nor the people of Sacramento can afford a new Entertainment and Sports Complex. He might be half-right.

But where you are dead wrong is the assessment of the people of Sacramento. The leaders who work full time to stimulate and protect the economic engines of the City -- the Mayor, City Council and City Manager -- believe wholeheartedly in our community. So do AEG and the NBA, who spoke loud and clear about their belief in the people of Sacramento by committing $132M in private investment to our community.
More fundamentally, today’s commentary is riddled with basic errors. A few particularly egregious examples (and there are more):
1. The claim that “there are no contingencies in place for cost overruns” is false. Turner Construction will provide cost overrun protection on the project as detailed in the term sheet codified in the Orlando deal approved by the City Council on March 6th.
2. The claim that general fund backfill assumptions will require “more than twice” the current attendance numbers at PowerBalance is false. Estimates were based on just under 1.5 million annual visitors, which is very comparable to current numbers.
3. The claim revenue projections are too high is dubious. Attendance at Power Balance Pavilion has declined due to six straight losing seasons, uncertainty surrounding your commitment to keep the team in Sacramento, and an outdated arena. Sacramento is home to two of the longest sellout streaks in the history of the NBA and is widely known as one of the most loyal fan bases in the league. The revenue projections prepared by the NBA were based on historical Kings’ data and performance of other NBA teams after moving to comparable state-of-the-art arenas. No entity in the world has better data and capabilities to forecast these numbers than the NBA, and they stand 100% behind their projections with a $73M commitment.
4. Finally, and most incredulously, is the laughable claim that your concerns are motivated by the potential risk to the taxpayers of Sacramento. Forgive us if this rhetoric falls on deaf ears when we read about your simultaneous refusal to provide the City adequate collateral on the Kings loan; share in at-risk predevelopment expenses; pay for police, fire and other municipal services on game nights; and pay all applicable arena taxes.

The deal that was agreed upon in Orlando protects the people of Sacramento while ensuring jobs and economic development – and by your own admission was a “fair” deal.

As for term limits, many in our community agree they are necessary. Not so much for the Mayor and Council (there are none in Sacramento – perhaps Mr. Thornberg confused us with Anaheim?), but for team owners seeking to divert attention from their lack of financial wherewithal to pay their fair share.
The people of Sacramento make no apologies for wanting to invest in themselves to create jobs, economic development and a vibrant downtown through a world-class entertainment and sports complex. Rest assured, that self-confidence will not waver no matter how many flawed claims emanate from your team of Southern California consultants.

Sincerely,
Chris Lehane

Brilliant. If they are going to continue to make such claims and go through the Bee to **** on Sacramento, we need the heavy handed approach to refute them.

Thanks,MDM! I was looking for it but got sidetracked.

This is class A drama, folks. You can't make up stuff like this.

A quote from Thornberg:

In the current case, such problems are being avoided because the Kings have made the appropriate decision not to enter into a deal that is bad for both the taxpayers and the team. Ultimately, they are proving their loyalty to their town, Sacramento, by not allowing this albatross to be laid across the shoulders of local taxpayers.

I feel so badly. I have maligned the Maloofs when I should be on my knees thanking them and singing their praises. They are true heroes who have saved the city of Sacramento and ALL OF US from unmentionable disappointment.

Hahaha! This Chris Lehane dude is BRILLIANT!

He is cutting through Maloof claims like a hot knife through butter. If they continue to throw assertions that they have since they pulled out of the deal, they will crash and burn really soon.

George will either sit back and ignore this or he will respond which will give Chris Lehane even more ammunition to take him to the cleaners.

The more attention we can draw to this, the better it is for us and the worse it is for the Maloofs.

Interesting times ahead.

The Maloofs made the big mistake of getting into a pissing contest with one of the very, very best. What they're trying to do is akin to bringing a nerf bat to a gun fight. Lehane has a well-deserved reputation as "Master of the Dark Political Arts." He was a political consultant for Clinton-Gore and earned his reputation by not being afraid to use the nuclear option if necessary to take down an opponent. The Maloofs have really bitten off a lot more than they could possibly chew.

Agree. And they put themselves, once again, in a no win situation. If they don't publicly respond, it will look like Lehane won, they were proven factually to be liars, and don't have the ability to refute his claims, which are correct. If they do continue to respond, he'll continue to tear them to shreds.

Maloofs, and George inparticular, should really have thought this through before opening their mouths and making outlandish claims. Do they not think before the speak, or did they really think this through, which once again shoes they have no clue what the hell they're doing?

Do the maloofs and their crew realize who they are battling? This guy is a political lion. He served the President of the United States, taming the political animal in the most political place on earth, Washington D.C. Im on the opposite side of the aisle politically from Mr. LeHane but I have nothing but respect for his ability to slice, dice, and drive the discussion. The maloofs will lose if they keep up this tit for tat.

I'm so glad Mr. Lehane is on Sacramento's side. The Maloofs are not going to win against him. They will only continue to prove their ineptness, if they continue providing ammunition to Lehane. I knew the Maloofs consultant did not have all his facts straight on the deal, but could never have torn into it as well or with as much weight as Chris Lehane.

Thanks for defending our honor Mr. Lehane!

They may not win, but everyone of these bogus articles they throw out can only reembolden the CAVE people, who are the enemy who in the end may kill Sacramento. The Maloofs are pathetic. Everybody knows they are pathetic. They have no friends left and are trapped. But all this stuff is either intentionally (slimy) or unintentionally (inept) pumping fuel directly to the naysayers. That's why its not enough to laugh at the Maloofs. Somebody needs to shut them the **** up.

And P.S. does nto matter how good Lehane's letter is, if the maloofs get their bogus crap out to a bigger audeince via a biger forum. We're reading it. But we don't need convincing. I'm sure Lehane as a former political operator understands the problem.

You should be watching ALL the local news coverage. It is very pro-#FANS. Every single channel tonight showed young Saraya and her plea to the city council and reported favorably about the efforts to go forth with the arena proposals without the Maloofs. The Maloofs, at least at this point in time, are not winning the media war. In fact, they're not even in the running.

Lehane's letter isn't just showing up here. It's the topic of discussion on local radio, it's trending on Twitter, and I've seen mutliple links to it on Facebook. And that doesn't include the local print media websites. The Sacramento Bee is all over it, as well as - I think - the Sac Business Journal. There are people talking, and a lot of the ones talking the loudest are the ones who back their talk with $$$. Taking on #ThinkBigSacramento could be the biggest of the mistakes the Maloofs have made.

I'm not saying it's over by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a fight. And it's a fight with some real big muscle getting involved.
