Will Vivek allow the capspace to be rented out like it should be? or will he be afraid to spend? Up to this point he has not hesitated to spend and hopefully that continues.

That's one thing you hope the Kings DO NOT do...unless you can bring in more draft picks, youth and/or all-star player, you don't go out and spend the cap space for the sake of spending. This approach has come and bitten the Kings in the rear end far too many times and it's time to take the wise approach. If you can't find the player(s) that fit your direction as a team, then try again next summer.

Langston shot .475 from the 3 point line in his 19 games with the Kings and some people are dismissing him? His career number is .366. I thought he was a nice 3rd PG to have on the bench.

Maybe not for this coming season but it's important he gets to play if his next multi year contract will be anything decent. He knows it's likely to shake out that he's the third PG going into next season. Maybe take less money to get in a situation where he can play decent minutes. He may find himself to b a forgotten player if he stayed two more years with the Kings

Perhaps the Spurs?

There are reports that they are interested in CP, but might not have the resources to get him. Manu might retire, TP might play limited minutes this season, if he does at all, and they already needed help in the back court. LG/Ben might be the kind of cheap options they can sign. They have a history of picking up pieces not considered valuable by other teams, and turning them around.

Well last year they were smart about it for the most part. We got a bunch of free agents on 2 year deals with 2nd year team options or really low guaranteed. If we don't find what we want, we should go that route again.

Exactly.

It's not about spending money. We have to spend it anyway to meet the floor. It has to be done with a plan. No signing middling vets to try and squeeze out a few more wins. This season should be all about developing the kids, and gaining assets for the future. The money should be used to buy draft picks.

Absolutely. Playing time is valuable to a guy like Galloway. It wasn't looking like he'd get much of it with the Kings. Playing somewhere for less money but more playing time can even be justified as an investment in one's future. It's not a guarantee, of course. But a player who doesn't get PT is much more likely to be out of the NBA in a few years than a guy who got PT and was able to show his value.

True, but even this should be largely redundant.

Last year, we had one of the best bigs in the game, and a genuine chance of making the playoffs. Signing vets to try and achieve that was a legitimate goal.

Once we decided to trade him, and stock up on kids, the entire direction changed. We don't need to sign vets to take time away from kids. We need to sign them to support/mentor the kids.

Easier said than done I know. What I mean though is that suppose we get Fox at 5 (and maybe another PG like Ewans with our 2nd rounder), it would be good to get a vet like DC or Lawson back to ease the pressure on the rookie, and be a mentor to him. Similarly, if we get Issac/JJ, would be nice to have a good character vet at SF, for the same role. These contracts can be large, front loaded (or similar contracts as we handed out last year, with a team option for the 2nd/3rd year), which will be attractive to the vets, help us spend the money we need to spend anyway, and not be long term pain.

Renting it out means selling it (taking on bad contracts ex. from portland) for draft picks this year or in the future like how Philly did to us. Only teams with owners who are willing to eat 70+ Million dollar deals can do this tho. I wonder if Vivek would be game for something like that.

So yeah I meant basically what your saying, under no circumstances should we spend on any veteran free agents unless its very short term and even then I would be against it. Next year is full steam tank ahead!

The issue is not just the money. It's also the length of the contract, and the value teams like Portland are willing to give up for taking these off their hand.

Money has to be spent to hit the floor. If we can get something for it, obviously, it's great. However, you don't want your space or a roster spot locked up in a dead contract, when you might be targeting someone else. If we take back expensive, long term contracts, we'll look for appropriate returns. As Captain pointed out in a previous post in another thread, getting that kind of value can be extremely tough.

In some ways, Portland is an ideal trading partner. They have several bad contracts, several picks this year, and their future picks are likely to be in the teens, unlike some other teams (like Rockets/Spurs), who might want to shed some salary to target some FAs, as is being reported.

All their bad contracts are long term though. It remains to be seen how much they are willing to give up in terms of assets to shed salary.

I'm pretty sure we have 2 days to cut Afflalo or trade him or else the Kings will have to pay the full cap hit to cut him if the Kings can't find a trade partner for him. It's because he is three years removed from being drafted so the rookie pay scale no longer applies.

What we're hopefully trying to do is take Evan Turner off Portlands hands with 2 of their first round picks. They honestly don't have a choice if they want to extend Nurkic. They have 140 mil in salary commitments next season and still 120 mil in 2018-2019 when Nurkic is a FA. So if they were smart, they'd use their superfluous picks to unload the albatross Turner contract onto us and get to keep the promising young 22 year old Center (who very likely get a max)

Almost all of their cap difficulties were self inflicted and uncnessary. Turner was an obvious overpay, as was Leonard, and I don't think they really needed to match that excessive offer for Crabbe.

I liked Crabbe, I'm not sure he has lived up to his value but hey... When they signed Turner it's like ok, they're letting Crabbe walk and then they re-signed him too... why?!?

Leonard sucks. Perhaps DMC making him cry is my last great memory of Cuz as a Kings fan. I will say he's the one I would be pretty upset about taking on his contract to get picks because he's a big cry baby loser.

I must say, however, that there have been a few of these guys over the years that - somewhere down the road - ended up in a Kings uniform. And then I felt differently about them. Remember Reggie Evans?
