The Gasol trade wasn't even the biggest steal of the last 3 seasons; you could easily argue Carter to Toronto or Baron to GS for expiring contracts and marginal playerswere bigger steals. Lakers actually gave up a very promising 19 year old guard in Javaris Crittenton. Nets and Warriors didn't send ANY promising prospects to the Raptors or Hornets in the Carter and Davis trades. That is highway robbery.

As much as I hate to do it, I gotta disagree w/ you on that one, ace. Pau for Kwame was an all-time heist comin and goin (if you're a fan of GoodFellas, picture Ray Liotta screaming in the shower when he heard the news). Some will hiss and boo at this, but Baron isn't as impactful as Gasol. He's a good shooting-PG, but he's a shooting-PG.
I'd rank that trade as the biggest rip-off since Webber for Googs and Willis and my rationale is based on age, skill, and position. Shaq was inherently a bad trade for LA, no getting around it, but he's an old contractual albatross who had 2 yrs left.

Losing Crittenton made it tough but when you get a player like Gasol, you have to give something back. Javaris was a casualty of war. Best wishes to Crittenton, he'll be just fine.

Nice win vs. the re-energized Heat. It was tougher than I thought. The Heat wouldn't lay down, they would have if Shaq was still there. Two more wins in the road trip and a stunning 7-2 record would boost their cause.

Memphis wansted expiring contracts. Marion would have put the Grizzlies way over that they will be paying luxury tax. For a franchise losing $20,000,000 a year, that's just too much to bare.

How do you explain a tragedy. In recent years it appears they want to spend their way to respectability. They have never been a success on the court but I will bet they have always made money. Probaby ownership is the explanation.
Explain the Yankees. It's all ownership and tradition that has contributed to the Yankees success. Knicks have neither.
In any case, the Knicks have won 2 NBA championships in 50 years. I lost count on how many championships the Lakers have won. Add up the wins of the Lakers and the Celtics and you've got about half (close guess, I think).
Given what has happened in New York with basketball and baseball, I would have to say a franchise needs a bright owner. The money will take care of itself 'cause I can't imagine a team from LA or New York ever losing money.
That's just a guess of mine as I am sure Angelenos know the finances better than I.
In any case, if I said there was a conspiracy to favor the Lakers over anyone else and I'm not sure I said that - I certainly wouldn't mean it - the Knicks' problems are either irrelevant to the topic or might even support an argument of Lakers as favorites.

I have a question: why would anyone want to buy Memphis? It has been losing money and by losing it's best player, it has no chance of having a winning record. How can it ever make money for a new owner?
Ahhh, I can answer my own question: the new owner has his/her own ideas of what to do with the franchise and is directing the Griz to do what he/she wants. A little nuts but then how do you explain Sterling?

1970 - "Willis Reed sits on the sideline."
1984 - "Henderson does NOT steal the ball!"

Willis Reed is better on one leg than most other mortals. It also can only happen in an era where there is no help defense or zone. If not for Willis (I saw the game live on TV) we can subtract one championship from the Knicks total and they would be neck and neck with the Kings.

In 62, the Finals came down to the last shot in reg of Gm7. The inbounds was drawn for West, but it got to Selvy who missed a short jumper. Celts won in OT. This series had a game that West won at the buzzer at the LA Sports Arena by stealing an inbound from Sam Jones and blowing by Havlicek for the layup. Logo was the man, man. Wish there was more footage of him in the early days.
In 84, at the end of Gm2, the Lakers were about to go up 2-0 and were extra cautious by calling a timeout to take the ball from the backcourt. Worthy made a crosscourt pass that was stolen and scored by Gerald Henderson, which sent the gm to OT, where they lost. If not for that, bye-bye Boston.
In 89, the Lakers swept the WC, including a 29 pt comeback win in Gm4 at Seattle in the Semis. That team was tantamount to the 2001 squad that couldn't lose towards the end. Riley worked them 2-a-days during the long layoff and Scott pulled a hamstring before the series while Magic pulled his in the 2nd half of Gm2 with LA up by 8 at the time. They spent the rest of the series starting David Rivers and Cooper at guard.
In 70, Frazier also torched West, who had a bad hamstring as well. He hobbled around w/ an ace wrap on it.
2004 - Malone's knee (39 games). Scott Williams fell on it. In Gm2 of the Finals, he re-injured it in the air when one of the Wallaces caught his leg on their body. I think it was Ben. Slava didn't fare too well against Sheed, btw.

Over here, fans and even our media were disgusted w/ the end to the 98 season (61 wins, WCFs). That's what spoilage is, you guys got a taste from the early 00s, but w/ us it's a mental condition formed over years. Trust me, it's not for show, we expect winning like it were a divine right.

Over at ClubLakers, fans are upset that the Lakers even after going 7-2 on their 15-day road trip. The Lakers should have gone 9-0, and should have blown most teams away according to the spoiled Laker fans.
