"DraftExpress spent the weekend traveling up the beautiful West Coast of Florida to visit two of the most prestigious NBA draft training facilities in America, IMG academy in Bradenton and Five Star Pro Training in Clearwater...

...DraftExpress has a bit of a sweet history with Five Star. Two years ago, minus two weeks, We got the first chance to watch a certain no-name prospect who was on absolutely no one’s radar at the time, a skinny kid from Western Carolina named Kevin Martin. At that point, Martin was unanimously projected to go undrafted by both the NBA’s advisory committee and most scouting services. Martin looked a lot better than that to me, which prompted us to call him one of the biggest sleepers in the draft after that exclusive private workout. Fast forward two years, and Martin is now in the NBA, coming off a phenomenal playoff series against the Spurs where he had one magnificent 26 point performance and another game winning basket, playing solidly throughout...

...The next drill is one that almost every college and NBA utilizes in their own practices—the “pitch and fill.” The ball is thrown off the glass and one of the two players participating goes up to grab the rebound. The player throws an outlet pass to the other, and then takes off at full speed with a wide angle as if on a fast break to “fill” the lane, catch the ball and finish with a dunk. The emphasis here is on the player’s “first two steps.” In a 94 foot court in today’s NBA, all a player needs is to beat his man on his first two steps to beat him down the floor. The value of this drill was never more evident at the end of game 4 of the Spurs-Kings playoff matchup, as Kevin Martin ran the court like a deer to beat all 9 players down the floor (coming from behind the free throw line) and finish with a layup over Tim Duncan to give the Kings the win...

...One of my personal favorites followed, which is unnamed but I call the pogo stick drill. The players are asked to dunk the ball with two hands right underneath the basket, catch it right as it comes out of the net, and then go up and dunk it again without gathering themselves—30 times over the first time, then 15, 8, 4, twice, and the last one an alleyoop. This is a grueling drill that works on lower-body strength, explosiveness and balance. Two years ago, this is where Kevin Martin’s quickness and outstanding leaping ability really shined, as he sprung up off the floor as if bouncing on a pogo stick. Thorpe pointed out that Martin could not dunk the ball twice in a row the first time he did it. When we saw him in this gym two years ago and later at a public workout at the Chicago pre-draft camp, Martin shocked everyone by bouncing like he had a personal trampoline at his disposal."

Guillermo Diaz, who the Kings are working out privately today, was at the 5 Star Workout this article is about, so you can check out the entire article to read about how that went. You can also see the post in the personnel moves section: http://www.kingsfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12726

Sorry this has nothing to do with your post, but it made me laugh when I saw a post "KMart, just for fun" by Target :)

I hope we never have a player named Walter Martin on our team :) IT would be too much fun watching KMart and WalMart play together.

HAHAH the first part! lmfao! :D

Petrie did a great job on picking Martin. I was just wondering what the reaction here was like when we picked him? Anyone remember? I think he will be a fantastic player in a few years and he has already developed very quickly. We got a steal.

One of our members, Kingsgurl, actually picked Kevin Martin for the Kings in a mock draft. She's had faith in him from the very beginning, as have a few of us who agreed with her.

For the most part, I think people were willing to trust Petrie but not quite sure of Kevin's ability to step it up and become an NBA player.

I'd bet money he was already on Geoff Petrie's radar.;)

Ha! We (the believers) took some heat for that one. Glad the young man was true to his word when he told me he wouldn't let us down. He kept that promise in spades. Looking forward to seeing further development from him. If he ups his ball handling skills, with that first step, he will be unstopable.

I remember reading a lot of the draft websites that were saying he could be a steal of the draft before draft day.

Strange that so few people saw those. Kingsgurl, 1kingzfan, me and 6th were about the only true believers at the beginning.

Well, and the family. They knew he would succeed, since they saw first-hand him make believers out of doubters before:D

:D I'm sure!!

Actually, I read good things and heard good things from Kingsgurl. Since I value her ability to spot talent, it was easy to jump on Kevin's bandwagon before it was even hitched to a horse. :p

p.s. Dear Maloofs, If Geoff ever moves on, I would nominate Kingsgurl as an excellant replacement GM. ;)

STK - We knew that. The point I'm trying to make is that VERY FEW people around here believed any of it. You could count the true Kevin believers on one hand. (Not counting his family...)

Here is an interesting read, a 2004 draft grade report from nbadraft.net.

Sacramento grabbed a player with considerable upside at 26. Kevin Martin's athleticism is severely underrated. With excellent scoring ability, Martin is still adding strength, and look for him to eventually become one of the real sleepers to come out of this draft. Geoff Petrie has become one of the premiere GMs in the business with a keen eye for talent

Good grade, in hindsight, eh:D Sleeper means not everyone had the faith that Geoff had. Sure glad he did!

Not disagreeing with you at all.

I always thought that he's better than Rip Hamilton because they have so much in common. The moves, playing style, speed and etc.... But I think he's still better.

Put Rip and Kev in a bad team..... And you'll see the difference ;)

Okay, that makes no sense whatsoever. I've pretty much SEEN every game Kevin Martin has played. I am without a doubt one of his original fans and very proud of what he's accomplished so far. BUT he's not at the Rip Hamilton level yet... Give him at least another year or two and we'll see.

I don't want to see people making him bigger than life quite yet because it will just lead to others trying to knock him back down.

Another player I would compare him to is Devin Harris. Watching him a lot in the playoffs, Kevin's game reminds me of his a little bit. The athletic drives to the basket. I would like to see Kevin after playing all this summer and coming back next season with some playoff experience under his belt- I bet he could be even better than Harris is now- and I personally think Harris has been pretty impressive.

I would second that nomination.
It was actually the things she was saying that made me take a good look at him. That bandwagon was pretty empty at the beginning.

When I first went looking for his jersey, it was nowhere to be found. When I was at the store at the Monarchs game there were several things with Martin on it. :) Looks like the marketing people caught on too.

Although true, I think it's quite understandable.

Kevin was a no-name from a small college program. A prolific scorer in college? Yes, but, as we know that is never enough to guarantee success at the next level. It's merely an "indicator" of what could be.

What I think our little minority did was to really "look" at the kid, not just the box scores, and see the raw skills that he possessed, even when they were not able to be viewed for more than a few minutes at a time in his rookie season. What we saw excited us from the standpoint of finally having a superior athlete on our team that could also be a big scorer for us from various places on the floor, and (from the get-go) displaying that he could hold his own defensively on a variety of assignments.

We saw potential. A huge upside.

Naturally, potential does not always pan out into bonafide NBA playing ability, but I think we really KNEW when we learned how hard Kevin was working this past summer. When I saw Kevin pour in 53 points in an SPDL game last summer, including lots of dunks, lots of 3's, and lots of pull-up J's, I knew that he was about to get over the hump and that 05-06 would be a breakout season for him.

Admittedly, the basketball gods smiled down on Kevin with Bonzi's injury back in December, since that "turning point" allowed him to play significant minutes without having to look over his shoulder every time something didn't go quite right. He developed a rhythm. He gained greater confidence. And he proved that he is a bonafide NBA player who still has lots of upside to improve even more.

I know Kevin plans on working hard again this summer, and hopefully, we will see similar results in the 06-07 season where the kid takes a another step forward.

You may also give 1Kingzfan and Kingsgurl the credit for his jersey and all the other "stuff" being "on hand" at the arena store. You wouldn't believe how they managed that!!! If you ever need someone to GO TO BAT for you..... look no farther. hahahahaha
