agreed. if vivek and co. really wanna ride this progressive nba 3.0 wave of theirs, i suggest promoting kayte to be the first female color analyst in the nba (she would be the first, correct, excepting sideline reporters?).

Doris Burke? Fairly certain she's commented on a few NBA games for ESPN. Actually, didn't she do the OKC-Sacto game on ESPN... last year or the year before?

Regardless though, point stands. I don't particularly mind Grant and Jerry, but I also wouldn't mind seeing new blood in there. Hard for anyone to compare when I'm used to Kruk and Kuip for the Giants, who are the best in the game bar none.

All of what years? I've been here for quite some time, and I've been forced to listen to Napear and Reynolds for that entire span. I also watch other teams play, when they're not playing the Kings, and listen to other teams' announcers, since I don't necessarily consume the NBA through a Kings-only lens.

I find that to be the most common line of demarcation in discussions like this, IMO. If you ("royal" you) look at the other teams in the NBA through a Kings-only lens - meaning that you don't bother paying attention to the other teams unless they're playing the Kings, or in terms of how their wins and losses directly affect the Kings - then you tend to grade the relative quality of a broadcaster according to how "fair" they are to the Kings. For example, if Steve Martin and Dell Curry are uncomplimentary to the Kings, and make sarcastic remarks during the game then, through a Kings-only lens, they would be perceived as "bad" commentators.

Since I am Kings-first, but not necessarily Kings-only, I don't put how "fair" or complimentary a broadcaster is to the Kings very high on my list of desirable attributes for a broadcaster. I'm not going to sit here and say that Jerry Reynolds is stupid, but he's not good at articulating what he sees on the basketball court. He's not good at conveying whatever intellect he does have in a way that people understand that he might actually know what he's talking about. He's not good at explaining what happened in a play in a way that a basketball neophyte will understand, nor is he good at explaining what happened in a way that will not irritate more knowledgeable basketball fans. What he is good at (for differing values of "good"), is making homespun, folksy aphorisms, bad nicknames for players, MOTO-like observations, and echoing his broadcast partner. That might be good enough for some. but it's not good enough for me.

I like Christensen as the color analyst because, arguably even more important than knowing the game, she's good at articulating that knowledge. She can explain why the team ran a play, what they were trying to exploit, why it worked, or why it didn't. She's not just going to spout off platitudes about how we need to score more points, or how we need to get stops; she can explain where those points could and should come from, in a manner that people of different levels of basketball knowledge can all be comfortable with. I'm not sure whether or not Christensen has any on-air chemistry that Reynolds has with Napear, or whether she is capable of at all replicating it but, if it came down to it, I'd find someone who would be a good fit to call games alongside Christensen, and give Napear and Reynolds their gold watches.
Please don't bother trying to explain to me why I like the Kings TV announcers, it is unnecessary. I do and
I am sorry you, and others on here don't. I post my comments occasionally because it seems to be called for when I have read some of these posts. It's Kings basketball that I enjoy and I like our guys that announce it.

Hard for anyone to compare when I'm used to Kruk and Kuip for the Giants, who are the best in the game bar none.

Somebody has never heard Vin Scully call a game.

Frankly I disdain Kuiper. Krukow is pretty good, but as a pair, they're terrible homers.

Bottom line when you're looking at baseball announcers, listen to them when their home team is down by eight runs. If the Dodgers are down eight Scully keeps calling the game and keeps bringing out amazing story after amazing story. The minutiae he knows about players on the other team is downright remarkable. If the Giants are down eight Kruk and Kuip start talking about their socks or how much traffic there was on the way to the stadium or some such nonsense.

Love Kayte. Not a huge fan of Dave. So I won't vote.

Edit: Might be better to say I just have mixed feelings about Dave. Hey, if Kayte's on board with Dave, I guess I should be.

Oh no you didn't! Please tell me you're not a Dodgers fan!

Someone's never heard Kruk and Kuip call a game. They don't babble on about that nonsense, they bring actual insight and entertainment to their broadcast, without over doing it like most casters.

Vin Scully is incredibly dull. Call me biased, whatever, but I just don't get up for listening to monotone for 3 hours.

They're one of the worst announcing tandems across the entire league.

Do you have NBA LP and listen to other team's announcers?

I actually disagree tbh, I have league pass and while they're not the best they're certainly not the worst IMO. The Lakers and the Rockets are absolutely abysmal, The heat are awful "LEBRANN OH MYYY" the clippers are just unbearable "Oh me oh myyyy" Ugh. the Knicks are terrible Walt Frazier is just... ugh.

Just gonna go out on a limb here and say you'll have more people come out in favor of throwing puppies off bridges than who'll agree with your opinion.

(Please note, I'm an A's fan so I have absolutely no pony in the Dodgers/Gaints race.)

That ain't what I typed. You appear to have skipped over and/or misread a relevant part of my post.

It's Kings basketball that I enjoy and I like our guys that announce it.
So, AFAYC, the fact that they call Kings games trumps all their flaws?

Eh, there's a lot of margin for error between "not the worst" and "good." I don't think that Napear and Reynolds are "the worst," either, but I would put them in the bottom third. Compared to Gorman and Heinsohn? No, they're not "the worst," but that's hardly a compliment.

Well, sure. It is subjective after all. Just for me, I don't think they're the worst by some distance.

indeed. i mentioned doris and cheryl miller in one of my follow-up posts, but they've been part of much larger broadcast teams at the national level, and only provided commentary on the occasional game. i'd like to see a female presence instituted as a permanent color analyst, at either the local or national level. kayte strikes me as a good candidate to break that barrier...

Nah, I just spouted off on something while knowing absolutely nothing about it! (I've watched several hundred games called by Kruk and Kuip.)

They don't babble on about that nonsense, they bring actual insight and entertainment to their broadcast, without over doing it like most casters.

Well, you're right that they're not Hawk Harrellson. That is a point in their favor. But maybe you turn the games off when the Giants are down big, because more often than not they basically stop paying attention to the game. I think that's a pretty good test of an announcing crew - how they do when the game is lopsided, and particularly when their team is losing. Lots of crews don't pass that test. To be honest, Grant and Jerry don't, either.

Grant's radio show and TV work are completely different things, and while I'm not a fan of the former I'm fine with the latter. It's been a few years since I've watched other teams on league pass with any consistency, but I felt that Grant and Jerry stacked up fine when compared to the rest of the league. I think Jerry's fine if you don't take him too seriously.

Meh, I have no shame in saying I'm perfectly biased and hate everything Dodgers.

Kruk and Kuip are THE best.....if you don't agree your a miserable Dodger fan. :)

I never claimed they're the worst. I claimed they're one of the worst.

I'd say the worst are Boston or Utah(when Harpring is on the clock). Lakers announcers are actually fairly balanced. It's announcers for teams like Houston or Miami whom suddenly cop a holier than thou attitude after big free agent signings.

But by and large, just about every team's announcers knows the opponent better than Grant/Jerry who appear to not know a thing about the rest of the league and lack basic analysis. They come across far more like a car salesman who's trying to sell me on how great IT is/was every other minute.

The Spurs commentary team is actually great to listen to as well. Sean Elliott is an awesome color-commentator. Also, the next time they are in town - after the game, head down near their broadcast team. Elliott is extremely nice and always willing to take time and sign autographs. :)

Last time someone tried doing that while they were in Sacramento, Demarcus got suspended.
