See, that's not gonna happen...at least right away. By voting no, you make it appear as though you're anti-Kayte (especially with the crowd who doesn't bother to read comments).

I had trouble with that poll because it lumps CD in with Kayte. I didn't vote. She would be a great color person if that's the pc word for Reynold's position.

BTW, isn't part of the old culture Grant and Jerry? Can their positions be secure?

Jason Ross and Kayte Christenson for our TV team, going into the new arena
I'm a big fan of Jason Ross. Woudlnt mind an expanded role for him, but I see him taking over Gary Gerould's position in the years to come. I think Grant is actually very good at what he does on TV. His TV personality and his radio personality are different people. I think if Grant were paired with a more competent color analyst, such as Kayte, we'd have a great duo

I'm assuming Angels Tsai is available?

Kayte would be great and you would presume a lock for the show. Talented, knowledgeable, funny, good on TV and attractive. And people like here.

I can't see Dave as the TV host. It's a particular skill set to move quickly in and out of recorded stuff and set up Kayte. That's not Dave's radio shows. Maybe he's got those skill, but no TV reps doing it. While it shouldn't matter, looks matter in TV to casual fans.

J Ross or other KHTK talent like Deuce make some sense, but the question is how natural can they appear on TV. If they can't pass those screen tests, might be a deal breaker.

I wouldn't be shocked if the primary host had other duties with Comcast BA (more duties in the Bay Area in the off-season). Decent job and particular skill set set so it could be new blood from outside the market. That will probably turn on who owns the show. The Maloofs owned the broadcast and sold the games to Comcast. As such, they had total control over talent and loaded up with KHTK folks. If Comcast bought the rights to produce, I'm sure the Kings will have a ton of input but the host staffing of this show might factor into the broader staffing decisions of Comcast BA.

There's a point way back in the day (not sure what year), where Jim Koz was on the air with Grant and I thought they did a very good job together. I was disappointed that it didn't remain longer

I honestly don't get how people think Grant is good at his job. Apart from having one of the most grating voices I've ever heard, he's arrogant, dismissive, and his knowledge is pee poor. I don't even know how he got the job in the first place. Granted he's not the colour commentator, but he's still pretty awful. Jerry isn't good either but at least he's harmless.

On the contrary, I would say that he's quite harmful, indeed: every time he voices one of his ridiculous opinions (Shot blockers? Who needs 'em?), every time he co-signs one of Napear's ridiculous opinions, he is being harmful to undeveloped basketball minds, who may be too new to the sport to know any better, and think he knows what he's talking about.

Actually you are right in that. Harmless wasn't the right word, but he's less arrogant in the way he delivers things, although that has changed noticably since the IT fetish took over. He's gotten more militant in his views, following Grant's lead. I used to have a soft spot for Jerry even though his knowledge was never great, and his philosophy broken, but that has started to change a lot. I wouldn't care if I never heard Grant's voice again.

I’m sure Grant has very strong positive and negative Q-scores. A lot of people like him. A lot of people loathe him. Some people don’t like his personality or broadcasting style. But mostly, their opinion of him is often shaped by his radio show. This was impacted by all of the water he carried for Maloofs and utter non-sense he’s said doing so. This puts the new owners in an interesting situation. If they ever decide to move him out, the die hards will howl. At the same time, they want casual fans to resume watching games on TV and a good chunk of them can’t stand Grant and view him as the defacto face of the Kings. That’s not great for business. I’d wager heavily on him staying … but those negative Q-scores matter. If he had a major blow up on the radio or did something else to put a dent in his image, I think he goes the next year. Until then, they’ll keep Grant and Jerry as to not rock the boat.

I'll never forget the time when Grant basically said all hope was lost with the Kings moving to Anaheim. It was all about his job back then. He acted like if the Kings moved to Anaheim, he would keep his job.

He changed his tune during the "Battle with Seattle" as he knew Chris Hansen would replace him the second the team was officially his.

I doubt that a "shock jock" personality from NewYork is the best fit for the Sacramento area going forward, if we're looking to change the 'culture',....whether it's only on the radio or not. People don't forgot what you do with other 'half' or more of your image in broadcasting.

This is an area where people like Jason Ross and Kayte Christenson are a great fit

Didn't vote. I'll leave the pre- and post- game show make ups to the Kings. I like Kayte, Jason Ross, Jerry Reynolds, and most of the others, don't know or rather haven't heard much Carmichael Dave. The Kings over the years have had good radio and TV people except our LA imports of the last few years. I wanted Kayte to come back and she has. I'll let the powers that be make the kind of decisions we're talking about here.

Do you mean Jerry? If so I certainly agree with you and last year's love fest with IT turned me against him quite a bit. If the ownership wants a change in culture, it has to realize part of the culture is Grant and Jerry.

People always talk about Grant like he just hopped off the boat last year or something.

Napear has been the voice of the Kings for TWENTY FIVE YEARS. That's deeper Sacto roots, and Sacto Kings voice roots, than half this board I would bet.

Out of curiosity, is it normal (or common) for broadcast team members to have their own radio shows independent from the team?

I hope that's not meant to be an endorsement of his job performance? What, are we supposed to ignore the fact that he stinks because, twenty-five years?

Comcast SN BayArea is the Warriors. The Sacramento Kings are part of Comcast SN California.

I hope so , both I like. Kayte will get her turn.

Don't happen to agree with any of this. The Kings are very fortunate to have both of them. Don't change on account of me.

They're one of the worst announcing tandems across the entire league.

Do you have NBA LP and listen to other team's announcers?

No and you think I would change my mind. I don't freely endorse them lightly. Where have you been all these years? These two guys I like and always liked and I never heard a word otherwise until I came on this board in 2009.

Just curious if you compare them to other announcers around the league and how far your perception extends.

You answered that though.

I thought Budweiser was great once upon a time, until I went to the store and saw all the other options.

General comment - I still fail to see why people who like Grant can't be allowed to voice their opinion. There are TONS of people who like him and a fairly small but vocal group that doesn't. If he's not your cup of tea, fine. No problem. But why does everyone think it's so cut and dried that there's only one "right" answer? I've seen a number of broadcasters I think are a lot worse.

All of what years? I've been here for quite some time, and I've been forced to listen to Napear and Reynolds for that entire span. I also watch other teams play, when they're not playing the Kings, and listen to other teams' announcers, since I don't necessarily consume the NBA through a Kings-only lens.

I find that to be the most common line of demarcation in discussions like this, IMO. If you ("royal" you) look at the other teams in the NBA through a Kings-only lens - meaning that you don't bother paying attention to the other teams unless they're playing the Kings, or in terms of how their wins and losses directly affect the Kings - then you tend to grade the relative quality of a broadcaster according to how "fair" they are to the Kings. For example, if Steve Martin and Dell Curry are uncomplimentary to the Kings, and make sarcastic remarks during the game then, through a Kings-only lens, they would be perceived as "bad" commentators.

Since I am Kings-first, but not necessarily Kings-only, I don't put how "fair" or complimentary a broadcaster is to the Kings very high on my list of desirable attributes for a broadcaster. I'm not going to sit here and say that Jerry Reynolds is stupid, but he's not good at articulating what he sees on the basketball court. He's not good at conveying whatever intellect he does have in a way that people understand that he might actually know what he's talking about. He's not good at explaining what happened in a play in a way that a basketball neophyte will understand, nor is he good at explaining what happened in a way that will not irritate more knowledgeable basketball fans. What he is good at (for differing values of "good"), is making homespun, folksy aphorisms, bad nicknames for players, MOTO-like observations, and echoing his broadcast partner. That might be good enough for some. but it's not good enough for me.

I like Christensen as the color analyst because, arguably even more important than knowing the game, she's good at articulating that knowledge. She can explain why the team ran a play, what they were trying to exploit, why it worked, or why it didn't. She's not just going to spout off platitudes about how we need to score more points, or how we need to get stops; she can explain where those points could and should come from, in a manner that people of different levels of basketball knowledge can all be comfortable with. I'm not sure whether or not Christensen has any on-air chemistry that Reynolds has with Napear, or whether she is capable of at all replicating it but, if it came down to it, I'd find someone who would be a good fit to call games alongside Christensen, and give Napear and Reynolds their gold watches.

Oh, he's not that bad as a paly by play guy. Lots of shaky types on local broadcasts.

But it is more to the point that somehow Sacto can't handle this abrasive New York shock jock or whatever...despite him having been there for a 1/4 century, through the franchise's best moments, through a decade straight of sellouts etc. etc. That argument just doesn't fly.

i lost all respect for grant during the end of the maloof era. he grilled callers who expressed their opinions on the kings. this went on for over a year. he turned his back on the kings fans during a dark period.
