Kings will not be offering Thompson an extension

entirely possible, but you just literally posted the entire blurb about it. A "source", not even a "team source" etc. Its something that any "source" including me could say just loking at a stat sheet and saying,m hey he's not starting. Perhaps this "source" is stating that we aren;t going to extend him before the summer and let him become a restricted free agent. That, at least, seems likely.
Can't say I approve of this move, we'll be hard-pressed to find a better backup bigman. Of course Thompson isn't putting up good numbers - this team is a mess! I truly think he'd be more effective in something resembling an NBA basketball team, as he's proven. Of course this is likely the Maloofs penny-pinching again - we'll find Thompson's less-talented, less-efficient replacement in the form of a cheap, undrafted D-league'r for the $ minimum - and the team will yet again sell the "upside" line.

JT is not scoring a lot of points, but he is shooting the highest percentage on our team (56%) and his PER is 16 which is 4th highest on the team (excluding Honeycutt's 4 minutes of game time). Of course he's also not playing that many minutes which doesn't help him score a lot of points or get a lot of rebounds.

Hoopshype also mentions right underneath this post that JJ is hoping to stay with the team and Kings will "revisit" a deal with him later
Just on a side note, my buddy who is real knowledgeable about basketball says he thinks the Kings biggest mistake is not playing JT enough (he's a Laker fan). Obviously he isnt any type of credible source but i just thought that was interesting to hear coming from a laker fan.

We used a 12th pick on this guy, I think the least we can do is retain some of our draft picks when it's time for pay day. I'm sure JT can be had for a very reasonable price, but then again...I am pretty confident that contenders will be looking for his services be cause quite frankly, he just isn't being utilized as he should be either that or we don't play him enough so either way something's gotta give :\
Doesn't mean we are losing him. It means he becomes a restricted free agent next year. One of the worst decisions was extending garcia for too much. I think it was a big reason why they traded Hawes. They just dont have a clue on what a player is worth anymore. Better to let another team offer a contract then match it.

JT is a roleplayer and has actually improved, which is saying something given our "coaches" over the past years. Dude plays well with Cuz, is a willing passer, decent defender, and doesnt demand shots. Good team player, good attitude....So yeah, he really doesnt fit in with the identity GP is establishing here (ball hogging malcontents).
Meanwhile we have JJ, who is turrible for chemistry (just like all our other starters), who is going to bounce anyways once his contract is up.

Considering that Jason Thompson was #12 overall pick in '08 draft he's just not lived up to that lofty position, especially as 4 yr college starter and older than most rookies coming into the NBA. He's probably reached his NBA potential and it has to be judged rather disappointing - with only minor improvement this season. Arguably, Spencer Hawes at #10 overall the year before has not reached his potential and is coming on with so far a very solid year as 76ers starting center. Among those drafted in first round after JT in '08: Robin Lopez, Roy Hibbert, Ryan Anderson, Nicolas Batum, and several others of note.
Agreed. The last two players we have extended (Martin, Garcia) both ended up overpaid, and at least with Garcia, with too long of a contract.
We need to be quite clear that this doesn't mean that we're losing Thompson. It doesn't mean we won't give him a qualifying offer and make him a restricted free agent. Extensions are really about locking up players that you can't afford to let go before they have a chance to get out on the open market (which does make the Garcia extension a headscratcher). Thompson doesn't really fit that bill. We can decide whether to keep him this offseason.

....I was going to get negative here but.....I think I'll pass, for now. I like JT and I think he should be starting and Hickson should be coming off the bench. What is the point of drafting well if we dont capitalize? I.E. Hawes traded for Dally and he's gone. I would hate to see a solid, if not spectacular 6'11" PF traded, or worse yet, just given an open door to walk and us wind up losing out on his value.
Excellent move front office. JT has been THE reason why we've looked like garbage this year. They've finally figured out whats wrong with the team. I'm so glad we have these geniuses running the franchise. The lack of ball movement, the terrible defense, the blatant giving up in games, Salmons being terrible...it's all Jason Thompson's fault.
JT never turned out the way we wanted but he is a legit big off the bench who brings it every time he plays. He's not the smartest or most athletic guy in the world but he does a bunch of things pretty damn well. He wont be demanding some huge contract but apparently the idiots running this team think we're going to better ourselves by getting rid of JT. I hope he goes to a legit playoff team and has a bunch of success.
