kings waive melvin ely and lanny smith

than that would be a usual dumb mistake of us to end up with the oldies like Nocioni & Mason instead raw but of full of potential 21 year old kid

So when he's 23 and STILL raw and "full of potential," are you still going to be lobbying him to keep him no matter what?

This is just silly. Yes, Donte Greene has potential but so did Quincy Douby. Greene deserves a chance to prove himself BUT he needs to do some growing up and he needs to do it NOW. He's 21 years old. Tyreke Evans is 20. Nuff said...

Hmmm! That leaves us with 14 players, and that includes Cisco who is out for at least 4 months, if not more. KT is not likely to play that much, so that means were down to 11 usuable players in a group that includes Greene, and three rookies. We have no legit backup for Hawes, except our starting PF.

I have to believe that must be something in the works to add some depth. I noted that Minny just traded a 2nd round pick next year for the rights to Nathan Jawai. I would have loved to have him. He's a 6'10" 280 pound C/PF that I liked coming out of the draft a year ago. Oh well! It is frustrating sometimes..

14 - 1 (Cisco) - 1 (KT) is still 12. I would guess that KT will be the primary guy joining Garcia on the Inactive List.

I would hope so. I wasn't in love with Ely but at least he was a fifth post guy. Noc will probably play there a lot, but I don't prefer to have him guard the legit 4/5s in the league. Against Nellie, sure. Garcia's injury may have been the nail in the coffin for Ely, because it basically guaranteed that Mason would make the team and Petrie likes to keep an empty roster spot to help in trades.

Meh.. i would keep Mr. Greenery for a while longer to let him prove himself while having some type of role on the team, other than being a team reporter. He still hasn't gotten any consistent minutes to show what he got. Yes, when he got some playing time, he bricked the ball and made stupid mistakes, but it's not like he received stable minutes.. Absolutely no player is going to flip into a star receiving inconsistent playing time

Standard fodder waiving. As for Donte Greene, it's still early to call judgment on him, but at this point he's surviving on potential due to his height-physical tools-shooting combination--this year might determine his fate.

Seriously..
The guy goes from being the star of his team to a guy that comes on at random moments and is expected to just turn it on?... I would honestly like to see him start a few games before we start calling for him to be waived. Thats just stupid.

Well, there is a big difference between a second year 21 yr old prospect and a four year 23 yr old prospect. If you play him now and see what kind of potential he has, then you dont have to wait another 2 years with him on the roster taking up space, time, and money. I cant think of a player that was successful after riding the bench for his first 4 years out of college .. it just doesnt happen. He needs to prove he isnt wasting the Kings time, and this wont happen unless he gets some PT.

but, on topic: I think everyone expected this to happen. The interesting thing will be seeing what players some of these other teams cut .. Maybe we get a big man that way.

help in trades? when was the last time that happened? he hasnt made a trade during the season that has helped this team in years... ever. unless you think that trading for artest was one of them. ely was a waste of space but we knew that this was going to happen. now we are back to where we were before the preseason started, lacking a back up center...

sigh... we dont have a back up center and our starting center is allergic to playing in the post because opposing bigs keep picking on him.

as for greene, he is raw... if he werent so tall he wouldnt be a basketball player. petrie should trade him, thomas and nocioni to the bobcats for wallace and nazr... maybe throw in a 2nd round pick or something to sweeten the deal.

Not surprised, although we might have given those guys more of a tryout during these meaningless preseason games. Not really sure why we're keeping Mason with Nocioni around, and Casspi coming along very well. Seems kind of like Mikki II, but at least if we're going to put an old vet in front of a developing player, it's on a cheap, single season contract this time.

Small ball, here we come.

That's the popular theory as to why he does it.

In any case, he does do it. Our roster has been at 14 for at least 3/4 of the Petrie years.

it never helps the team... trading webber during the season didnt help the team, we still have kenny "the movable piece" thomas. trading christie during the season didnt help the team, it actually left martin off of the playoff roster bcause we had mobley. trading bibby during the season didnt help, we ended up signing beno to a 5 yr deal in the offseason. trading peja for artest was okay, besides the fact that ron is crazy of course and we drafted douby in the offseason...

we havent benefited from a mid-season trade ever... artest was close but he's crazy and the team was horrible. well, our power forwards were horrible. thomas and rahim... wow.

Hardy surprising given they did not play in preseason. Ely looked like he might be done lastyear, and I guess we concurred.

Greene is obviously a different situation. He's got a contract and is not a camp invite. He's basically got a year here before he's unemployed to show something.

Jeez. Now there can't even be a factual statement about Petrie preferring to keep an empty roster spot so he can do a 2-for-1 trade if one comes up without you going negative, negative, negative, negative, negative.

It's really gotten beyond ridiculous.

He looked terrible in the open scrimmage. From what i saw he has a low bball IQ.

He might have low IQ period...

Donte has been given so many opportunities to prove himself. It's not like we're such a good team that he hasn't gotten a look. He comes in for 5 minutes, and jacks up 5 3 pointers. Maybe he makes one, maybe none.

Does he deserve more minutes next game b/c of that? Hell friggen no. Play the game. Play defense, play your role. Your minutes will come. For a guy that's a reported 6'11, he sure likes to sit beyond the line and wait for the ball.

Donte hasn't been given minutes b/c Donte has not put in the work that he needs to do, plain and simple.

Have you seen Nathan Jawai recently?! He makes May from last year look anorexic!

Jermaine O'Neal came close....

Hey, he used to weigh around 310, and got his weight down to around 280. I don't know if you've ever seen him play, but the guy is pretty athletic and moves very well for a player of his size. Lets see, Blair at 6'5" and 280 is OK, but Jawai at 6'10" and 280 isn't.

Err dude, I am willing to bet that I have seem more of Jawai than you would have considering that I live in Australia.

He might be big and athletic but he is not someone that I would want the Kings chasing. He just isn't good enough to be regular rotation player in the NBA and when you take into the account his heart issues I say we should pass.

nazr mohammed would be a nice back up center, he has a short contract and wont steal minutes from thompson and hawes....

And this is what you would do? We need a backup center who can rebound and block shots but you want to get Nazr mohammed? Yeah you really know a lot more than Petrie does.

what's silly?! I'd rather give him more chances, more playing time up until he turns 23 and see if he can prove himself in the league, if not then dump him. It's a lot better than to continue to be in a so-called "rebuilding mode" by playing 30-plus year old career role players instead of him.
And lol Donte is anything but Quincy Douby! Nuff said...
