Kings vs Mavs - summer league

McLemore needs to improve his handles for sure and I'm not worried about his shot as he has a great stroke. But he's not afraid to get on the boards and has had some good passes to others. His athleticism and age are definitely in his favor. The future looks bright but I'd probably have Thornton around for this year to let the youngster ease into the NBA.

Ray M is a keeper. That was a good battle between he and Mekel and Akognon. Gordon and Aikens were interesting.

Tough game for Ben.

Big difference in poise and readiness between Ray and Ben. Ray is two years older and has 2 years of additional experience .

Ben McLemore was atrocious. I'll try to maintain composure on this. After one summer league game I fully expect Thornton to be our starting two guard next season and I see serious holes in #16's game that make me concerned about his future

I dont think it had too do with the knee it all. He was just straight up taking bad shots..
ok a FEW were bad. but really it was just not falling. maybe nerves? maybe just off, maybe just got ding'd up early.... doesn't matter this guys a SURE FIRE TALENT. its a summer league game. its always more chaotic than real NBA games so the style is different. Many GREAT players struggled in the summer league. as well as many BUSTS played outstanding in the summer league.

It means nothing. its just one game. did anyone else hear when Reggie and Kerr were talking about how George Hill went like 0-40 his first 4 summer league games???... how did that turn out for his career??? hahaha

EVERYBODY CALM DOWN AND RELAX. Ben's gonna be just fine.

ben was short on everything, he has good form on his shot, bt looks kinda akward shootin it, meaning not smoove...hopefully it was just a bad shooting night..

He def forced a few, but he had a TON of great looks. I'd say at least 13 of his shots were great outside shots you want him taking. He just missed them tonight.
Nod. He showed his ability to play off of screens and get open shots, which is what you look for in summer league. His shooting percent was lousy, but shooters have off days. If he shoots that bad for a long period of time during the season you start to worry. Freaking out before that is a bit premature.

Looked really smooth to me, good elevation and follow through. Good footwork on his step backs and body position when taking the shot. Just didn't go in.

As has been the case with our last two draft picks, I am no McLemore cultist, but thing is, and I highly advise this -- you shouldn't watch summer league for results or whether shots fall. You watch it for skillsets. Because guys either can or cannot do things. And on that front the very first time, I mean the first GAME I saw Reke and Cousins I went whoa. You couldn't miss the special. It was eye opening. On the other hand the first time I saw Jimmer and TRob it was quickly er...uhoh. Because if you were watching skillsets you could see the problems there. No positions.

And on that front, people should really try to look behind the fugly shooting line with McLemore. What is important is his skillset. And what I saw was kind of as I suspected. He does NOT have a special skillset. There is no whoa! On the other hand, he's not a position confused mess like Jimmer or TRob. Of our last 5 picks he would occupy the middle ground. His game makes perfect, standard, humdrum sense. He moves to the right spots, comes off screens, spots up, squares up, occasionally uses his athleticism around the glass. So even though he shot like ****, I am not worried about this one the way I was about TRob's debut last year. I know what Mac is, and more importantly I think he knows what he is.

Now obviously if he continues shooting like this well, disaster. But based on his game, that could turn anytime. The form on the shot is perfect, jusut a question of results to follow. He missed some forced shots, but he also missed flat out open ones. And the key thing about his game making sense is that he was getting standard shooting guard shots, reasonable shots. Spot shots, shots off screens. And then a little junk. If he is the shooter people have made him out to be, his game makes enough sense that he should start hitting those shots. He's not going to be held back by not getting it. So, not a believer in his special, but also would urge no panic over the lousy shooting...for a game or two at least. The structure of his game is sound. Was just the execution which sucked.
