What a game!
Even with his poor shooting from three (and that stupid non-call charge) Markkanen was amazing. Full credit to him. He's the main reason why this game was so close (honorable mention: Kings' closeouts on threes). I had a blast, my eardrums had a blast, and this was the second-most exciting Kings game I've been to live. (Number one was the Donté Greene Knew It From Before Tyreke Shot It game. Apologies to this game, but it is what it is.)
My buddy who went with me (has kids so a somewhat more casual fan; doesn't have cable so can't watch all the games) made a point to mention before the game that he didn't get the Sabonis hype - he had been to two games and felt that Sabonis had underwhelmed. Anyway, we got there early, and it was time for me to buy a fresh jersey in our free time before the game - I considered a purple Fox but found (the only) Sabonis gray City hiding in a bunch of Davions and went with that. So clearly when I modeled it for my buddy there was a good-natured grudge match begun. Domas (and my sarcastic "he sucks!") more or less shut him up in the first three possessions of the game and by the end of the game I think my buddy had turned around on him. The Kings didn't need another Ferrari. The Kings needed to till some soil, sow some seeds, and harvest some crops. I'm damn happy with the yield so far.
Anyway, however well Sabonis performed, we needed the whole team tonight. In the final 13 seconds, we had Barnes with the huge offensive rebound, Keegan with the assist, Huerter with the three for the lead; and then Fox with the swipe, Barnes with the contest, and Davion with the box out to close out TWO defensive stops. It was beautiful. Tear-to-the-eye kind of stuff.
And that purple beam, shooting up into the rain and the low-lying clouds? Epic. Worthy of one of these:
