[Game] Kings vs. Grizzlies (Vegas Summer League) Friday August 13th, 6PM PT (9PM ET) ESPNU

Sam Merrill's best defensive move appears to be just getting in the way of a dude and falling down hoping that the refs just assume it's a charge.

Davion, King, and Neemias are solid. Ramsey finally getting a groove to make you notice and wonder if he'll be on the roster in a year.

I don’t think he will be but that’s ok. I’d like to see him get a full year down in Gleague. It’s hard to see him getting an run behind Fox, Hali, Mitchell and Davis

Grades:

Queta: B+ Honestly, he couldn't have played his role better; was a rim protection savant in the first quarter especially and was doing an excellent job at challenging everything. Looks to be getting more and more comfortable every game with his movements out there and starting to show a little bit of that passing ability from the scouting report. His athleticism really does help him stay viable, even at his massive size.

But my guy only had 3 rebounds the whole game and 2 of them were on offensive put-backs. Queta has to follow that Capela/Gobert sort of blueprint if he wants to stick in this league; elite rim protection defense, be incredibly efficient in limited offensive shot attempts and clean up on the glass. I believe a few people here have said he lacks great rebounding positioning/fundamentals and that's shown up so far in his SL play.

Ramsey: A. Something's really clicked with Ramsey as he looks like a totally different player in the last 2 and a half games than he did in the Cali Classic and even most of his play last year. He's attacking the rim drawing a ton of fouls, he's not timid with his shot and he's actually starting to live up to him being a "shooter." Probably even more important that can't be overlooked is his defensive pressure on-ball and chemistry with Mitchell on the defensive end. He's showing real strides as a 2-way player and has probably been our 2nd best player the last 2 games.

Mitchell: A. Had a stat-line of like 8 pts 2 rebounds 1 assist, 2 steals on 3 of 9 shooting at half... And was still the best player on the floor at half. He might just be making it his life's goal to terrorize every lottery pick drafted because Williams had a very similar baptism that Bouknight had a few games back. The shot looked amazing today with a couple really nice step-back moves to create space. He seems to have 0 issue getting up his jumpers against bigger defenders. His on-ball creation scoring/shooting has been a real nice surprise and I think elevates him into all-star potential combined with his defensive prowess.

King: C-. Shot wasn't falling for King, but I appreciate that he finds ways to keep contributing when the shot isn't falling. 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and continued to play pretty solid perimeter defense. He did get beat more today than he has the previous 2 games. He continues to show he's just not a spacer; most of his made baskets today were him creating off the bounce and getting to the rim. His skill-set remains the most intriguing to me just because how valuable his player archetype is.

Metu: D+. Same sort of deal for Metu tonight as King with his shot just not falling. I didn't see as much defensive success as he's had the last few games, but really did try to pick up Queta on the glass with 9 rebounds. His first basket was an AWESOME on-ball creation move from the perimeter that looked so quick and fluid. He's really embracing the "Big wing/4" role. I hope Walton sees what his upside is and gets him a consistent role off the bench at the 4.

Woodard: B. Maybe a little high on the grade, but this was probably his best game of the summer. Was really active on defense shutting down several plays at the rim and active on the glass with 6 boards in 13 minutes. Had a "not good shot" on a corner 3 that kicked off the side of the backboard. As bad as the offense has been, I think he's truly found a nice niche as a 4 on defense and using his length/strength to bully people out of the paint. Defenders have a tough time moving him once he has position in the paint and there's just enough lateral quickness that he should be switchable onto guards. I'd love to see Bobby get creative and try him at the 5.

Maybe it's the extra size he's put on, but still looks very mechanical with his movement on the floor. Not very explosive at all. Defensively, I think he could contribute at the NBA level. The problem is he'd probably be the worst offensive player in the NBA along with it.

Overall, another really nice progression game from our NBA prospects. I think the Kings have a real shot to win the summer league with the defense they play. Just need two of King/Metu/Ramsey to show up with Mitchell so the offense doesn't stall out.

Love the consistency from Mitchell. Really want to see him go against another Bouknight type guy. It's way less fun when the guy he's guarding isn't a go to player.

Swag looking impressive. He doesn't resemble his G League self at all. After that first game he's been the most consistent and solid all around player IMO.

Queta has a lot of work to do. Seems like he has no idea how to rebound and needs to learn how to use his body in the paint. I don't see him getting many minutes this year unless the injury bug hits some guys.

Really hoping King finds some consistency. Other than Mitchell, his performances on this team are about the most important considering he could be a great compliment at the 3 on the Kings.

He's well on his way with 2 of the 3 traits he needs... the rim protection/paint clogger and good rim running/efficient on limited offensive touches. But the rebounding is god awful right now for a dude with his physical measurements. And it's not for a lack of trying either as I like the motor that he plays with.

Still, hard to complain about his progression curve during these games as the 39th pick. He's gotten better basically every game and you absolutely can see an NBA rotation player in there at some point.

Queta’s rebounding is being considered for a “Wonder of the World”. I don’t know how you can be that size, that age, with that athleticism and alleged “tell em once and he gets it” BBIQ (according to his coach) and still be that inept at rebounding. Board man he is not.

Still, I like him a prospect and love the flashes of rim protection.

Lots of really big men have trouble rebounding their first couple of years in the league Out of college, especially when they come from a smaller school like Queta did. They’re so used to just being so much bigger than anyone else that they never learn how to box out/properly time rebounds. Mobley’s had a similar issue for Cleveland in summer league. Sengun hasn’t but the Turkish league is much more thorough in big fundamentals than most college programs aside from Kentucky (Calipari for all his faults is really good at developing interior skills for big men that lots of other college coaches have sort of forgotten about)

Yeah I don't think he's a bust or anything. There aren't many 2nd rounders that come in the league and look good right away. The things he needs to fix are fixable so it'll be interesting to see if he can develop.

He's actually much quicker than I thought. Just needs to work on some fundamentals. Luckily we have 15 centers on the roster so he won't have to get thrown to the wolves.
