Kings sign Mikki Moore!!!

Someone clarify this for me. I thought it was a three deal with a team option after the second year. No?
(EDIT: *sigh* VF21 beat me to it, that's what I get for being so verbose!)

That was what the press were saying at first, but later reports made it sound like a rather unique contract. He's guaranteed for 2 years. If we release him at the end of the second year, we still have to pay him for another half a year. If we don't release him at that point, we've got him for another year.

Mikki has never had a shot at such big money before, almost certainly never will again, and he's got to be thinking about retirement. He had been wanting a $30M contract , 5 years at MLE (who wouldn't?), which would leave him set for life. His market value outside of Sac was $11M for 3 years. I see his peculiar contract as a way of getting him for 2 years, at MLE + 25%. I really doubt that we will be keeping him for the third year, but there was no other way we could pay him that much for 2 years work without running afoul of the cap. So we sacrificed a little of our future instead, offering him half pay for a season when he'll be gone.

Okay, so $3 million guaranteed for 2009-10 to Mikki Moore?

I emailed Amick yesterday, he says its a "2 1/2" year contract.

# years, but if we cut him/waive him before June 2009, then the last year is only half guaranteed. So maybe $18 mil :)eek: ) for the three years if we keep him, but even if we cut him we still ahve to pay half the final year (roughly $3mil, or $15mil total). So its still $3mil against our cap in 09-10 best case.

goes either (numbers are approvimate + guessing):

07-08: $5.4mil
08-09: $5.7mil
09-10: $6.0mil

or if we cut him,

07-08: $5.4mil
08-09: $5.7mil
09-10: $3.0mil (not with team)

mentioned before, its like a prenegotiated buyout clause or some such.

The guy is athletic, has good heart, and does what we always wanted from a big (rebounds and putbacks).

Which guy are you watching? Moore is nothing more than bench fodder. A 7 footer should average more than a couple rebounds a game end of story. I was actually looking at him a lot last year when I saw the Kings needed big men that could rebound, and after about 4 games (I get league pass) of watching the Nets I realized this guy is horrible on the glass, and at blocking shots.

I bet this guy will be a fan favorite by mid season next year.
I definitely welcome anyone who hustles and has heart.
OK, all that showed me is that if he cuts to the hoop he can dunk it. If someone gets him the ball, 'cause he doesn't dribble much. ;)

Nice couple blocks and offensive rebound-dunks, which are nice and all, but isn't this why we have Justin?

Justin is too small

Justin is a great athlete and can hustle but he is still a toothpick and only 6'9". We need Mikki to at least give some resistance to guys like Tim Duncan and any 7', 250lbs+ guys. Hawes will be our one and only offense inside the paint next year. He'll get some serious PT. Most of our scoring will Jumpers and dunks on fast break. Bring back the dunks to Sactown baby.

Wrong argument -- Justin at this point is already more of an impediment to a Duncan than a Mikki has ever been. Mikki is the toothpick -- very weak, lackas abilty to bang on the boards either. Which is not to go with the Justin as the next Ben wallac silliness, but Justin rihgt now looks to be stronger, a better shotblocker, and a better rebounder. Mikki is longer, but he;s never been able to offer much resistance to the big post players of the world.

yeah a starting 7 footer averaging less rebounds than Brad is awful

I predict we move SAR, at least. MM saves us a few bucks over SAR and MM might give us more over the next couple years than SAR would.

SAR is tradeable provided his knee isn't too bad.

"At some point, you have to exercise restraint. Can you get a player who is going to change the direction of your team? Probably not. And you have to ask, How many of those midlevel contracts do you want when your team is trying to refurbish?"

*(I'm sorry, but darned it, I really just couldn't stop myself from posting the above quote that I'd recalled having read a few days ago, after learning that y'alls Sacramento braintrust had succeeded in locking up the services of the good Mr. Moore for the next few seasons or so... )

It's so funny you posted this. That was the exact Petrie quote that came to mind when they signed Moore. There must be another plan they are working on.

Word!

With singings like Moore is,Kings won't be candidates for the playoff spot!

Yeah, I remembered this quote almost as soon as the signing was announced...it was also quoted on local radio quite a few times that same night, too. The first thing I said was...'Mikki freaking Moore!!??...What the??!!...and for the MLE...ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!??' Then I started to think it was part of a plan for some sort of trade...then I realized that we're just going to suck the next 2 years or so, but we'll still be mediocre enough to not get a good draft pick...so it really wouldnt matter either way.

edit: oh, and welcome back Evil Mav, its been awhile. Must be nice to still be in contention...what do you think about Cuban's bid to buy the Cubs?

at this point, I really hope that the NBA gives us a free arena, because there's no way in HELL anyone's gonna want to invest their money in THIS team...for a LONG time...man, I'd like to see our poll of existing season ticket holders and their want to re-up for another season after this one...the nausia from mediocrity will be too much to take for most this next year.
After seeing all the moves so far, I wish I didn't renew my season THIS year. I don't like the idea of having to re-build. I want the Kings to make the playoffs NOW instead 2, 3 or 4 years down the road. Its already depressing just thinking about it. Nothing has been positive with this team. NOTHING.

if we could somehow trade SAR and have his salary come off the books (maybe for a pick? don't know how that works), then i think this is fine. essentially replacing SAR with moore is fine by me.

From what I've heard, until you actually receive your tickets you can get a refund. The Kings ARE rebuilding, Rock. I personally think there's going to be a big difference in what we see on the court this year, if you aren't overly concerned with making the playoffs. I think we'll see a return to fast-paced basketball with a lot of young talent.

But if you're serious about wanting the Kings to make the playoffs now, you might want to consider calling your ticket rep. I'd offer to buy your season tickets but it's impossible for me to get to all of the home games, as I'm sure you know.

Look...highly unlikely in this case. People are considerably overstimating what Moore is. There is nothing he can really teach Spenser Hawes. Spenser is better than he is today. Spenser was probably better at 16 than Mikki is today. There is not a single skill that Mikki has that Hawes does not. Mikki has been a back bencher his entire career. Hence the feel good of his explosion last year. It was because "its Mikki Moore!" I can almost guarantee you that Spenser does not look up to Mikki Moore, let alone want to emulate him.
I guess an anology is like Kyle Lowry to Mike Conley. Lowry was a bench player who had less than 20 games experience in the NBA. There is not a single skill Lowry has that Conley does not. They're both bad shooters and Conley already knows how to run a team better. Conley is a hot-shot #4 pick while Lowry barely sneaked into the first round in a weak draft. I can almost garantee that that Conley does not look up to Lowry and does not want to emulate him.

Right?

Except Kyle Lowry has taken Mike Conley under his wing and is Conley's mentor.

Is Miki Moore going to teach Hawes how to do a sky hook? Probably not. Just like Lowry is not going to teach Conley how to shoot a jumper. But it's naive to think Moore has absolutely nothing to teach Hawes.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

I'm planning to wait through this week and maybe next week for a sign of life from the front office. What I want is simple. I don't want to pay to watch Kenny Thomas and Brad Miller play basketball. Buy out, waive, trade for other garbage... I don't care. I need to see a move in that direction.

If I knew I would be watching Douby, Martin, Garcia, Williams, and Hawes every night with Moore, Salmons, Price and Mustafa coming off the bench I would have no qualms about keeping my tix and waiting out the rebuild.

If I'm going to have to watch Brad, Kenny and SAR waddle half heartedly through the motions I don't really want to do that... not at half the price.

So I'm hoping the front office can address this problem. Having Mikki Moore as the 8th guy is not the problem. Having Brad, Kenny and SAR in the top 7 is the problem.

I have already paid my season tickets. Can't a person just be frustrated? We say one thing but mean another? I "want" to get my $ back, but the other part of me says "I'll wait". Is that not ok to be frustrated? Besides, I've already change seat location (which I really like) and I'm not about to give it up....just yet.

Whoa.

I was simply repeating what I had heard. I don't know how I was supposed to know you were just frustrated and didn't mean it.

Sorry I tried to be informative.

No need to be sorry. Sorry to be frustrated right now. I want a couple of trades, I want a damn new arena...but neither of this has panned out so far. I don't get why they signed Mikki Moore. My god, the man is 32 freaking years old. Yea, I'm frustrated. If the Kings want to rebuild, getting a 32 year old is not what I had in mind of a team wanting to rebuild.

Would it help if I mentioned that Mikki has a nice jumper? :D

Well, at least it made me laugh.
Me, too.

:)

It was so much easier back when our team was exciting and venturing into new heights. Whether you look at it as rebuilding, sucking or whatever else in between, it's tough having to live through all of this. I sure wish life came with fast-forward buttons sometimes.

Has a nice jumper, hustles, grabs rebounds, block shots, brings energy/experience ... Not a Scrub as most people put him as...
Has a jumper, hustles, does not rebound, does not blocks shots, brings energy, and experience of knowing where every doughnut shop is in every city and exactly how a dozen different stars in 8 different cities like to have their jock strap ironed.

And yes, he's a scrub. Or let's be charitable and call him a roleplayer. I don't know if you just started watching the game midway through last year or what given your repeated comical claims that nobdoy else had been watching, but Mikki Moore has been around the NBA for a long time. Everybody knows who and what he is, and what he has been, for a very long time. I actually ratehr like the guy and a few years back was even suggesting we sing him, for the veteran's minimum, as our 5th big. But this attempt to glorify Mikki bleeping Moore, career 10th-12th man, is just over the top. I never in my wildest dreams expected to encounter a Mikki jocker of all things.

The sad part is that that whooshing sound you heard a few minutes ago was the sound of you completely missing what was supposed to be an ironic "has a jumpshot" reference to Geoff's talent evaluation approach. Irony is wasted on the fervent.
