Kings & Rudy Gay reach agreement on 3 year contract extension!

Observant people may have noticed my pause in critiquing PDA since right about the time that draft video came out and my eyebrows went up a bit. They will also notice my reference several times to a perceived split in our front office, and the fact that there appear to be at least 2 and maybe more strains of thought going on, and that there is a "good" strain which seems to have been involved in acquiring pieces like Evans, Hollins, Casspi, even Collison I suppose. Scrappy roleplayer types. Somebody in that front office is a lot closer to my way of thinking than the rest of it. It might in fact be PDA. The more I listen to his ideas the less I think its Vivek or that Golden State Nellieballer he carries around on his right shoulder all the time. I like the way Malone talks, but other than Landry, which was reported to be his idea of a safety blanket, I'm not clear or sure he's doing much more than suggesting tone. We've got a new analytics nerd, but scrappy roleplayers are analytically invisible, and Gay is an analytics pariah, so he doesn't seem a likely candidate. Shareef is gone, and was old Petrie/Maloof school anyway. So...one version of reality that I suggested back in camp is that its PDA himself who has been sneaking in these little defensive vet type roleplayers and whatnot while other elements have pushed the offense and flash.

Regardless, this is a flat good deal no matter who is or has been doing what.
 
I'm glad Rudy accepted the bargain deal, but it's just odd that you don't see more players of his caliber taking less money to help a team. To this point in his career, Rudy has netted $74 million just off his contracts. I'm sure he's had some endorsements you can throw in there. How much money does a guy need?

If I'm in any of these stars' position, I'm taking something like $8 million and letting the front office go get more guys like me. Of course, this is A LOT easier to say when it's not actual money I'm hypothesizing with :D.

Ok, interesting insight, and fantastic non-yes-yes. I was just poking the bear a bit.
 
Wow I'm shocked and delighted. One concern I had was whether we could keep Rudy AT ALL, much less at a bargain price.

Pretty soon it will be time for the "PDA any questions" thread. Maybe not today maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life.

Step back and look at the overhaul - the entire body of work. It has been spectacular. Deep playoff run our first year in the new arena has been the vision all along I think, and last year may have been a bit of a "tank" in fact to get that one last lottery piece.
 
Can't complain. Really a short two year deal, which will let him reassess things once the cap jumps due to the new TV deal.

We don't know the breakdown, but we can assume that it's going to be about $13M each of the three years. This means that as of right now, we're on the hook for about $56M next year for ten players (Casspi, Reggie, Hollins, and Dwill will be gone), but that will be only about $7M in capspace before whatever rise we expect to see in the cap. '16-'17 is basically the same story, with us on the hook for about $56M with only Sessions and McCallum additionally falling off the roster that offseason.

The point being, if we're going to get another big piece, we'll either need to make a trade for that piece, or we'll have to get rid of either JT or Landry on the cheap. Rudy essentially IS our free agent signing for this upcoming offseason. Though I figure that having him locked up on a very team-friendly contract may give us the incentive to go out and find that next piece.
 
Good deal. Gay can take advantage of the increase in salary cap later if he keeps playing well and the kings know what their cap situation will be in the off-season. Gay at 13-14 mil is good value for his production.

According to Larry Coon, "The [salary cap and luxury tax] numbers for 2015-16 are now projected to be $66.5 million and $81.0 million, respectively." (link) So, assuming that we don't have a first round pick next year (yay!?), that's a little under $10 million to play with. Not enough for a Rondo or Gasol, barring a JT or Landry dump. But something.

This is a great deal. Justifiably, Gay could have asked for a max deal. I don't think he's "that" good, but considering the Kings' recent history and small market, he really could have. Probably would have went somewhere for less, though, because I don't think we'd be willing to go to the max for him.
 
For me this is fantastic news. Rudy at 28 will be at peak of his career for duration of new contact. For too long we had lamented lack of SF talent in the Kingdom. Now we have it and #8 is going to be around for awhile to solidify one of NBA's most dangerous duo's on the attack.

So now looking at Kings starting five it's - Center (check), SF (check), PG (check), SG (new surprise check), PF (only remaining upgrade need along with back-up center talent)

Christmas has come early this year in more ways than one.
 
I was prepared to see the Kings pay a bit above market value to keep Rudy (which I assumed would mean $16 million per or more) so I think this is a great deal.

The Kings still have Derrick Williams' expiring contract to make one more deal to hopefully put this team into contention mode, so here's a statement I didn't anticipate making (in a non sarcastic manner) prior to the regular season: Keep up the good work D'Alessandro!

Using my poor math skills, I come up with something around $12.5 mil in the first year of his contract, and if he were to opt in, around $14.3 mil in the third year. That would mean with the cap projected to be $66.5 mil, we would be around $11.9 mil under the cap. Of course that excludes resigning Casspi or Moreland. Resign them for what we were paying them this year, and that puts us around 10 mil under the cap. Certainly enough to sign a good player. If we can clear a little more space, maybe we can go after one of the top players in freeagency. But in the meantime, I'm happy we got Gay's signing out of the way. Nice to know what the core of the team is going to be going forward. Depending on what the team does this season, having both Cousins and Gay in the fold, could be very appealing to freeagents we might be interested in. Hey, we're 6 and 4, and we've resigned Gay. It's a good day!
 
I too think this is a good deal. Not always too excited about Rudys team play, but he has been surprisingly team oriented this season. HOwever, the guy can shoot and he can play defense. If he is buying into the team concept, both sides will benefit.

Awesome deal, and nice timing for both sides. This significantly improves team stability while maintaining cap flexibility going forward. Great job Pete, nice choice Rudy. I think you will find Sacramento to be an awesome home for your career and new family!

With the deal behind them, all parties can focus on basketball. Rudy can rest easy and get get some more wins, while the front office can use this stability to continue to build this team!
