Honestly I feel like the deal has been done since Bruski said there would be a change during the AS break.
Ever since then it has just been the media putting as much spin on every tiny grain of info they have gotten.
I think we're seeing Orlando force our hand.
I think the Kings were willing to wait til the offseason to take the lay of the land and see if any other good coaches became available. Whether or not Karl would actually go to the magic, it's a threat you have to take seriously.
They were probably willing to do a wait-and-see with Corbin. This (sort of) makes sense if they thought he could do okay, or at least wanted to give him a shot.
In a weird way, this train wreck actually makes it more palatable to wait: 1- the pick (even if they didn't intend to tank, it doesn't make sense to make a desperation move in a lost season when your key guys are on long-term contracts); and 2- a prolonged disaster in some ways makes this job MORE intriguing- ie, Malone showed early season that the talent is there, while Corbin shows how key coaching is.
For a good coach looking to cement a legacy (like Karl), doesn't this job look more attractive now? Any coach who comes in and wins with this team is gonna look that much better compared to how awful the squad is now (similar to why Harbaugh went to SF - if you see a talented team facing dysfunction, that's a HUGE opportunity for good and confident coaches).
Reacting and moving now is a good thing, instead of sitting on your hands and waiting and hoping and risking getting burned later.
I still have no trust in the FO, but if they sign Karl over the ASG, they will have played out this situation well. Not well enough to believe in them, but just good enough to cut them some slack and see what they do over the next year.
