Kings need a few vets

#35
I think free agents they could potentially look at:

Mike Miller
Kyle Korver
Wesley Matthews
Will Bynum
Anthony Morrow
CJ Watson
Kyle Lowry
Steve Blake
Derrick Fisher
Ronnie Brewer
JJ Reddick
Roger Mason
Nate Robinson

None of these guys should be super expensive but none of them are really the complete shooting, defense, passing combination they are looking for either. I do think we need another backcourt vet to balance out the rotation.

Good list. The one name that stands out to me, that I would be absolutely thrilled with, is Kyle Lowry. He can't shoot for crap, but he's a game changer in virtually every other respect. Hard nosed elite defender, driver, who can pass. If he ever learns to shoot a litttle, as Bobby did, he'll be absolute dynamite.

You do want shooters around Tyreke. But I also think it's key to have a PG stopper. Michael Cooper to Magic's Tyreke. Someone who can come offf the bench and shut down Paul, Rondo, Brooks, Rose, Wall when they are getting off and bring energy.

How much do you guys suppose Morrow is worth? How much do you feel he will get? What would it take to get him to come here? He wouldn't have to move if he came here :D

It would be highly unlikely that Ray Allen would sign with the Kings. Boston would first have to rethink their future, he would then most likely try to hook on with one of the new "super-teams" (Miami or Chi or NYK) if they have any $ left.

Kings would have to overpay and sell him on their direction in the next two or three seasons...so yeah, it ain't going to happen.

What about Jason Kidd? I am sure Dallas would make him very available if we took on most of his contract. Kidd would be a great backup with Finals experience who can teach Tyreke some Point Guard skills. This is assuming we can package Beno + Landry into something else.

Nah, Kidd is a traditional PG and needs the ball in his hands in order to fill the Quarterback role. Not sure how that would affect Evans, but at Memphis before Evans was given the ball and told to "go to town" Memphis wasn't very good offensively.

We need a guy like Morrow, or a guy like Allen.. Heck, even Jason Williams, or Steve Novak.. Williams learned to play off the ball in Miami with Wade and he did REAL well so it wouldn't scare me if Williams, and Evans were in the game at the same time (although I see Williams as a bench player). What better way to sell tickets than to bring back J-Dub?

Here is Steve Novaks stats in case people don't know who he is.

Yes we need veterans... and thats why I started that thread about getting Raja Bell.

Some of you said Bell is too old and you would only want him if he was 6-7 years younger. Well if he was, he wouldn't have the same veteran savy and experience to teach our young Kings. We don't need a super athletic wing that can drop 20 a night. We need a good defender SG with size and can shoot the 3 pt shot. Raja has all that and is known to be a great teammate and locker room influence.

Battier would be another guy I would love to have on the Kings but what are the chances.

LOL you boneheads Hunter is 40 at most. Yeah him and Houston were a duo tho.

We're throwing names around and who knows, but I trust Kings brass to shore up that spot well enough. Gonna be a hell of a year fellas. :)

While we're going after Fisher and Bell, let's also get Michael Finley, coax Horry out of retirement, and then somebody can shoot me in the head. :p

Nate is the absolute LAST person you want around this young team.

And peeps, Morrow ain't a "vet". When you say we need vets, its not about adding talent -- there are no minutes to play that "talent". Its about adding a guy(s) who has tons of experience, a teacher/mentor, with some leadership. Not some random 25 year old. And defintely not Nate, who is cancerous, undisciplined, and has brushes with the law. If we're looking for a "vet" its got to be somebody to class up the joint and show the kids how its done, not somebody who's going to show them all the best strip clubs in each city.

I also actually suggested Raja Bell a few months back. By my memory, i got shot down by everyone. I honestly think Garcia will fill the sg role just fine for now.

Granted, he's a guy who we would need to carve minutes out for, and I'm not sure how exactly we'd get him, but Shane Battier is a guy who comes to mind for me.

Top flight defender, solid shooter, and most importantly a hard worker, leader, and good character guy.

He might even be caught in a bit of a minutes crunch in Houston between KMart and Ariza. Still, he's their captain and I can't see us really having the ammo to land him without giving up someone I wouldn't want to part with (Greene/Casspi).

I think you may be overestimating the talent/combination of talents our 3 backourt players. Will it "work" for now? It depends on what we're trying to accomplish, but I wouldn't be oppsed to adding a younger combo guard to balace things out.

Not according to GP though. It's no secret he has tried to get him in the past.
I was in support of it one upon a time too.

Several years back -- different era though At that time Nate would have been the kid, and all that awesome veteran leadership we had oin the Muss/Theus/Natt teams would have been counted on to help him grow up. Now everything's pretty much topsy turvy.

I think this really depends on how well Cisco recovers from his injury - he came in a rough spot last year but played decent off the bench. I think we really need Beno as a spark plug off the bench and a change of pace player.

IF Cisco plays the way we hoped he can, smart decisions, consistant long shot, solid defense then we will be in good shape... If not he's a great player off the bench but we will have to continue looking for that one piece that fits with Tyreke and it may just be Beno because they played so well with each other down the stretch last season. We will need that strong solid vet on the floor with our young guys though I think.

The target is a third guard with experience or leadership. There are guys on the bubble of this like Duhon, then there are guys way on the vet end like Anthony Carter. Finding a guy who can help teach how to close out games, who can tell the immature kids to shape up and who would be satisfied with 10-15 mins a game is a lot tougher than I thought it would be. All the old guard guys, minus Fisher, are pretty much out of the league. Guys like Carter and Earl Watson may not have enough pull. Raja Bell might be the best option, but he seems like a guy a playoff team would be able to entice.

Out of Beno, Cisco and Dalembert, only Cisco has a real voice to keep guys in line.

I think Ray Felton could be a leader guy, but he would not settle for less than starter minutes.

One option not thrown out there yet is Trenton Hassel. More a swing, but I think he could deal with limited minutes at the two and has playoff experience.

edit: I just forgot an obvious answer and a former King. Damon Jones. He is playing over in Italy, but I am sure an NBA offer would get him to back in the states.
