Kings May File for Relocation Before Deadline

A bigger question might be, will Petrie stay with the team. He's stated many times that he loves sacramento and wants to stay here. It might be why he turned down an extension on his contract, knowing that the team might pull up and move. Of course, SoCal isn't that far if he wanted to maintain residence in sacramento. By the way, Grant has also said he loves sacramento. It will be interesting to see who stays and who goes. Hopefully it won't come to that..

I was part of your AOL group, as was my son. I went to our group meeting at one of the games. I think your a very nice man, and I will never doubt your support of the Kings. However, at this moment in time, I don't share your sentiments.

I read the LA Times sports page today and it had an article below the fold on page 2 regarding the possibility of the Anaheim relocation. Again, it was below the fold on page 2 so it was no huge article but the final sentence stuck out to me and it said that the Maloofs would NOT "be getting a $100 million loan as had been earlier reported". Obviously, this is good news if true. It remains to be seen.

Personally, I think Anaheim may be getting used. Of course, they may be dotting the i's and crossing the t's as I write this but I just don't see why they would relocate before a new cba is in place and with the ICON/Taylor thing still having an outside shot of passing. To me, the Maloofs are playing hardball and are going to use as much leverage as possible and I don't blame them one bit. Anaheim is leverage ploy number one IMO. Not saying that it means they will stay in Sacramento. Las Vegas and Seattle both have arena issues that they are addressing this March and it has been widely reported that those 2 are on the radar as well. With 3 possible homes for the Kings trying to get something done at once, it makes all the sense in the world for the Maloofs to use the one city with an arena as big time leverage.

Grant gets very irritated when someone calls his show about the Kings possible moving. Of course though, he hasn't had a show since all this came out this weekend. He ahs said however he loves Sac, his family loves it, and he would have to rent a one bedroom apartment whereever the Kings ultimately move.

Aside from that, I can understand someone not agreeing with Grant, or caring for his opinions. I can't however understand how king07, or others, would wish for his entire family to be uprooted from their schools and friends, and have to move. Seems pretty callous to me. Grants wife and kids have nothing to do with whether or not you you like him personally.

At that time they weren't on the verge of losing control of the Palms. Things change. No one knows for certain but its a very possible cause for them to favor one deal over another.

The funny thing is, if Sac loses the Kings, Fresno becomes a better sports town than Sac, WITH a state of the art arena. We have the NCAA basketball tournament coming here next year (women's), and just had a major business conference at our arena (Save Mart Center) with Rudy Guliani and Colin Powell as two of the big name speakers. Is Sac getting any of that stuff? No. A new building is so much more than the NBA - it's events like the one I mentioned, concerts, hockey, etc. Plus, we already have the Giants AAA team here - in another facility that's less than 10 years old. It's sad, because I used to live in Sac. I so want the Kings to stay, but I'd rather see them move than disappear from the NBA landscape completely.

That thing is a massive scam, probably in Sacramento as well. It's here in Portland, I wondered why they give away tickets for .99 cents or under $10 for an entire office, that's because they are trying to sell you get rich quick schemes for 8 hours.
 
I'd be more inclined to believe the Kings are considering moving to Anaheim if I wasn't aware of two mitigating factors.

(1) I've been to the Honda center and it's not a particularly nice arena either. The concourse is equally cramped and it has a lot less available parking. I wouldn't go so far as to say Arco is better, but I would say that if the Honda center is marginally better, it's not enough to make up for problem #2... which is:

(2) Orange County is jam-packed with die hard Laker fans. Would you switch allegiances from one of the all time winningest franchises in NBA history (currently sitting on two consecutive championships) to a perennial loser whose biggest moment of the past 20 years was a high profile loss to, yes, the Lakers in the Western Conference finals? My friends who live in Orange County still refer to our team as the Queens. If the Maloofs are having trouble selling tickets in Sacramento, yikes are they in for a surprise. If the Kings don't start winning down there immediately, the novelty will wear off fast.

I'm sure they are seriously considering other options, they have to be. And I hope this news wasn't intentionally leaked to gain leverage on the city because it seems like a pretty empty threat to me. That would be a very very bad business move in my opinion. But more than that, nothing which the franchise has done since I've been old enough to watch has caused me to question my commitment to this team, until now. We seem closer now to a new arena than we've ever been and now I've got to spend the next week wondering whether I'm ever going to watch NBA basketball again. It makes me sick to my stomach. I don't think I can even watch the Kings play until March 1st has passed.

Thats not true though! Its the line that gets thrown out with every attempt to get the new plan for arena approved but the truth is, I don't think Sacramento is any closer to the new arena now than they were 10 years ago. Its just another proposal that will be rejected because of the funding. Everytime a proposal gets put up it gets rejected because the Maloofs or Council (most of the time) are not prepared to finance it to the degree proposed.

The point is, unless some sort of taxes are introduced, there is no chance that the arena gets build and we all know as soon as the word "tax" is mentioned there is a loud outcry of "NO!" from all the naysayers who would rather spend the money on education, crime etc...the same bull**** gets paddled out every time yet the funny thing is, all of those things that they think are more important are not getting addressed either.

I have said it before and I will say it again, PURELY from a business perspective only the Kings would be much better off just about anywhere as opposed to Sacramento. In Sac they are bleeding more and more money every year. I hope like hell something gets done and they stay in Sacramento but removing all the emotion and looking at this logically, currently the Kings as a business are in massive disadvantage because they are in Sacramanto under current conditions.

Well, then we disagree. You're right that a new tax to fund an arena will never get passed in Sacramento, but that's not the only way to get an arena built. I'm not going to dismiss the current effort without first hearing what their financing plans are. And if the Kings would be better off almost anywhere but Sacramento, than Anaheim is one of the few exceptions for the reasons I listed above. If the Kings are at a massive disadvantage financially, it's because the owners are almost broke and can't afford to wait two or three more years for a new arena anymore. This Anaheim moves doesn't make sense for any other reason than that.

The owners might be broke but they have waited for a DECADE to get the new arena, how much longer do you want them to wait?! From PURELY business perspective they have waited FAR TOO long!

It is different than 10 years ago. There is a plan now to develop the railyards. If the city wants the railyards development to get off the ground the best way is to put the arena there first. If the tax is to develop the railyards which includes the arena then it has a better chance of happening. Otherwise, it maybe 20 years before anything happens.

Look at it this way, in 10 years they will need another new arena if they move to the Honda center. So if they learned their lesson on not waiting they should be gone in 5 years, right?

You know I looked it up because I couldn't recall... but the Arrowhead Pond/Honda Center opened in June 1993! That is only 5 years younger than Arco. It will be 20 years old in 2 years. It seats only a few hundred more people too. The big difference is the number of suites. But looking around inside the building... it's not anywhere near the state of the art buildings being constructed today. I think this move has a lot to do with market size and maybe not so much about facilities. I wonder how that is going look a few years down the line and once the newness wears off and the Maloofs start talking to Anaheim about a new arena or renovating the Honda Center to match the more modern facilites?

And don't forget, there were a couple of NFL teams that left LA because they weren't getting new facilites. So it's not just Sacramento that has struggled to get something built.

According to KGO-TV, Brown is looking at cutting redevelopment funds, a move that the governor's office said could save the state $1.7 billion per year. It's his proposal to give that money back to local governments and schools, but Santa Clara says it needs its share of the redevelopment money to help fund a new stadium for the 49ers.

It's coming down to those on the 49ers' side who say that the mostly privately funded stadium in Santa Clara -- about 40 miles south of San Francisco -- is a good use of the money, against those who say redevelopment agencies should not be in the habit of subsidizing NFL teams and their owners.
 
The Maloofs have also stated they would like to keep the intimacy of what ARCO Arena has brought.

The KCRA video on the possible move, states that if the Maloofs file on or before the March 1st deadline, neither the NBA, not the Maloofs are required to announce that publicly. So they might file to move and we might not know it until the moving vans are here.

I am presuming that the Maloofs could file to keep that option open, but then not actually go through with a move?

That makes sense unfortunately. Wouldn't want to kill fan attendance.

The harsh cruelty would be if we busted our butt trying to get them to stay like by going to games on Feb 28 and they were already packing. I'd feel pretty foolish to be sucked in. They already could have filed although I will stick to my moderately supported idea that they will stay at least another year.

Like Glenn, I am hoping they will hold off one more year. The Taylor/ICON group is probably our last best chance and its not going to happen without public funding as part of the deal. All I know is where were the important people when we could have used them? Everybody has just been dawdling along for 14 years. I just hope it isn't too little, too late.
