  • Sounds as if Keith Smart's hope his team would bond in the offseason is happening. Ten of the players on the roster are in Sacramento working out and playing 5-on-5. The only players that could not be in town are John Salmons, James Johnson, Chuck Hayes and Francisco Garcia. It's important that young nucleus that the franchise is depending on (DeMarcus Cousins, Tyreke Evans and Marcus Thornton) is in town. Also have to like that new PG Aaron Brooks is getting to know his new teammates. Definitely a step in the right direction and something that's needed to build team chemistry.

I think this is great and its exactly what this team needs, lots of time together, coming together and learning to watch each others back!

This is something a veteran team like the Spurs would do, not the Kings. Hmmm.....maturation in process?

As critical as I may be of Smart, there ARE some things that he has done that I think is pretty darn good. With this team, we have to remember there is no major vet presence and in a way, he is it and must not only be a coach but fill in some of the duties of a vet which may be to be more of a friend than is typical. It's tricky to keep a proper mixture of coach and mentor. Maybe with his family approach, they all willl earn to have each other's back and he can withdraw a bit. Time will tell.

I was going to post this last night, but decided to wait till this morning in case there was more info. But I got scooped by the great Baller. Good job there! The only Kings not present are Salmons, Hayes, Cisco, and James Johnson. I'll quickly excuse Johnson and Cisco. I think we all know that Cisco would be here if possible. I'll give Johnson a pass, since he's late to the picture, and may have already had plans. However, both Salmons and Hayes had to know about this in advance, so while not being overally critical of their absence, I'd be interested to know why they couldn't make it.

I do think we have to give credit to Smart when its due. He's doing a good job of building team chemistry, and getting the team to buy into his plan, whatever that might be. The bottom line next year will be wins and losses, regardless of how we like or dislike how he gets there. We all have our preferences on the kind of basketball we would like to see. And, of course we all think were right. But if by some miracle, we make the playoffs, and have a respectable win/loss record, I'll give him a pass, regardless of what system he plays. At least for now.

If Salmons and Hayes want to just not show up for the opening of camp that would be fine too. :p

I get the feeling that salmons just genuinely doesnt want to be here, he must have known in advance and still couldnt clear out his schedule?

Hayes apparently played in TJ fords pro-am in houston over the weekand so im not sure why he couldnt be here during the week, espciallly since he is from the area and has been crowned one of the vet leader, glue-guys on this team, he NEEDS to be here, for a veteran he looked as lost as anyone out there last year.

I tweeted him " get on that cardio big boy" to which he replied "your right, im going right now" so at the least he knows he needs to be in better shape.

Garcia deserves a pass, I think he's still hurt from the exibition game vs. team USA in Vegas additionally he thought the DR team would make the olyimpics so he bought tickets for his family to go watch, when they didnt make it I think he just went to london anyway.

We are in complete agreement! By the way, our great beat writer, J. Jones, after mentioning in a tweet that the Kings were here in sacramento to work out together, stated that he would be in the Raider camp today. Good job there J.J. There are Kings in town, and do we get any interviews or observations? Hell no! He's the worse beat writer the Kings have ever had, and I say that with all due respect to R.E. Grasprich.

Chuck not being there is a red flag for me, as he lives closer than anyone else, as during the off season he's about a 2 hr drive away. On twitter he seems busy watching the Olympics.

I somewhat doubt the reputation Chuck has as a hard worker. Came into camp over weight, has never been in great shape or appeared to lose weight. Of all the Kings who've been in town this summer, which have been many, not one mention of Chuck, and he's our supposed vet leader who also came into camp out of shape last year.

I;ll hold off some judgement until training camp, but I'm not at all impressed with Chuck, and he has a crap load which he could work on and try to add to his game, as he's one of the least skilled bigs in the league, when you take passing out of the conversation, and passing might be the one thing you don't work on much in a gym by yourself. Most other part of your game you do, but I don't get the impression he's busting his a** by himself in the gym like Reke/IT/Cuz/JT are. There's not a single good reason he shouldn't be working to add at least a decent 15 footer to his game, yet how long has he been in the league?

However I am excited about the work Reke/IT/Cuz/JT are putting in.

Hard to disagree with anything you just said. You would expect someone that was brought in for veteran leadership, to be front and center. There is one small possiblity, and thats maybe he knows something we don't. One can only hope.... By the way, did anyone ever tell you that you bear a remarkable resemblence to Van Gundy...........:D

I don't really blame him for this. The Bee is sending him to Napa because they want some Raiders TC coverage. He's just doing his job. And as far as getting interviews, I read that the team is trying to make this a media free get together so they can focus on themselves and not get distracted with any media interviews.

He already got his one big payday. i dont see that strive to be great, or even a little better, in him.
im impressed with the work JT is putting in from what i see on his instagram/twitter, if im not mistaken he has been in town for a week or so putting in work after inking his deal.
There is definately more activity going on from our young guys this offseason in comparision to last season, very encouraging.

JT always puts in work. He may not have the highest ceiling, but he's going to reach it (if he hasnt already).

+1 to the rest, good to see our core getting together.

Excellent news.

Maybe

C- Cousins
PF- Outlaw
SF- Evans
SG- Jimmer
PG- Thomas

vs.

C- Thompson
PF- Robinson
SF- Honeycutt
SG- Thornton
PG- Brooks

could really make a difference for us to get Brooks into the swing, and could really help TRob as well after the rough summer league to work against true NBAers (ok, he's probably matched against Outlaw, but still).

It does seem odd that "The Chuckwagon" would not be at a player (Coach Smart) organized work out? Maybe there is a plausible explanation?

If it was me and I had the time off and NBA money I would be in London:)

That big behind of his is his only weapon against the 7 footers. Can't fault the logic; can't grow up, must grow out.

I know it is a heavy temptation to judge but aren't any of you impressed that we could any 10 of 14 on the payroll to do this during vacation, other obligations time? Give em all a break. It's a good, yes a good sign that we have this get together and we can get 10 to come.

Someone said it earlier but we are, for a change, watching maturation in progress with the young core of the forward looking Kings. And they planned this during summer league and followed through. Now that is encouraging. Am dying to find out how Honeycutt is doing.

Might it have anything to do with DeMarcus coming out and proclaiming that he was done with the losing mentality around these parts? This kind of franchise changing personality with the follow through on actions comes how often again? I'm a dude, happily married with children, but there is a certain Boogie I would consider worshipping...

I find this news very encouraging. This is Smart's first off-season as coach of the team and this season will be his first full season as coach of the Kings. Please let us see some real progress this season...please.

In fairness to J. Jones. I've been going after him pretty hard on twitter, and he's hasn't been very happy with me. But he did send me an e-mail saying that the Bee had assigned him to cover the Raiders camp. So in this case, he does have an excuse. You have to do the bidding of the hand that feeds you. But I'm not going to excuse him for his less than stellar performance at summer league. Cruzdude got more interviews than J. Jones did.
